Ok, this topic has been beaten to shit over the last 7 days since the Lotto was announced. I have not read one new insightful thought, original idea or witty thought in the last 5 days so everyone should shut their pie hole unless they are willing to meet me in front of the BM corporate offices on Mission Street December 3rd for a protest march against the Lotto. Who is in?

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
This is just fucking perverse.
I know we're in Nevada, where everyone seems to love gambling, but to make Burning Man into a lottery is a despicable way of solving the ticketing problem.
1. If you have a problem with people all trying to buy tickets at the same time, get some, with better servers else to run the ticketing service for you. If big commercial companies like NFL and Live Nation can handle it, so can we. It's not even 50 000 people hitting the servers at the same time. That's nothing, if you're prepared for it.
2. On the issue of sold out tickets, I still believe FCFS is the way to go. A lottery goes against the principle o radical self reliance. You didn't get a ticket last year? That was your own fucking fault! A lottery disqualifies me as someone who is able to take active choices to improve my own future.
I love you all,
/Gustaf
Ps. Sorry for ranting. I much rather get a protest sign and run over to the BM office....but I'm in fucking Sweden.

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
I disagree, guff. Big companies like Ticketmaster and LiveNation (who have nearly limitless server resources) are known to have serious technical challenges with on-sale events that have demand over 10K. And I think first come, first served is only fair if it can be assured that tickets will be available for a reasonable period of time. Last year it was a little over six months, first come, first serve was totally fair (except for the thousands of people who were there at the beginning on day one, and through no fault of their own got boned on the ticket tier they were shooting for). But with more than half the 2011 tickets selling out in 48 hours and then the sellout in July leading anybody who got burned/had a close call/knows someone who got burned or had a close call to plan to buy early or think about stocking up early for 2012, there's a very real likelihood that the event could sell out really quickly. And yes, two things scalpers really love - events that sell out quickly, and first-come first-served sales (no scalper likes a random selection unless they've got someone on the inside).
Ideally, my choice would be for there to just be enough tickets, but unless something magic happens to widen the highway and make the BLM rethink the idea of capacity, I don't think that's going to happen. I think this is a pretty good plan, and gives a distinct advantage to those who plan ahead. BTW, in case you missed it (it's a long page), the FAQ does have some good info that speaks to general concerns (scroll a bit, it's about 3/4 of the way down the page).

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
Aha, hadn't seen that yet(busy all day yesterday)
Thanks again, Trilo!
Q: How do I increase my chances of getting a ticket in the Main Sale?
A: You can increase your chances by opting into all the pricing tiers. (We believe, based on many years of analyzing supply and demand, that most participants will find they are able to access a ticket on an acceptable timeline.)
therein lies the answer most of us have been looking for!
Let the games begin!

"Unfortunately, there may once again be more people that want tickets than there are tickets available; put simply, that means as far as Black Rock City goes, some who desire inclusion may not be able to attend.
This doesn't mean someone isn't part of the community, or is unwelcome to participate in Burning Man. Burning Man is not just one event -- it's a way of looking at life, and that is available to everyone. "
Made me smile...

Good morning! Yes, I really do hope it helps. I appreciate very much what Trilo has been saying and he's right: if we had released this all at once, people would have been shocked at not getting more notice, especially since the first milestones & deadlines are coming up soon...but as of last week the plans literally were not available yet because we hadn't agreed on them yet, nor settled them all to the level of detail you see now. I'm very glad it's out now and people can spend the time getting their heads around the details & asking informed questions.
Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
I had a thought, Urine Sample, when you register you have to pee on a strip of paper and send it to LLC (or whoever handles this) and when you arrive at the gate your already dying for a pee, so to supply a secondary sample to have it checked is no problem, you can have a 'P Lot' for those not able to pee.

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
I'm still not going to be spending any more money on setting up for burningman until I have tickets confirmation in hand. We don't have much "spare" income these days (three kids in college) and have to sacrifice other things to be able to go to burningman. I'll just plunk the money into the savings and wait. Go ahead and snark me for being uber cautious, but really, what else would I use a monkeyhut and playtech furniture for?
And yes, burningman leaves you with another way at looking at life, but I felt that whole paragraph was condescending and would not make me feel any better about not being able to attend.

if youre looking for them to justify/make you feel better about not being able to go to a sell out event.. well id have to say youre looking in the wrong place.tamarakay wrote:yes, burningman leaves you with another way at looking at life, but I felt that whole paragraph was condescending and would not make me feel any better about not being able to attend.
im surprised they even stooped so low as to include that in the FAQ.. as in, why should they have to even justify people citing radical inclusion being a reason for them to attend? the numbers just dont allow that.. too bad. its a sell out event.. not some matlock TV show where you can pull out the 10 principals and get a pass in to burning man

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
A: Because Radical Inclusion principle is a FAQ, is why it's there.
We did not start saying "it's a way of looking at life" because we're changing the way you get your tickets. It is genuinely part of the story of this culture --ask anyone out there in the regional network and they'll say we've worked to support year round Burning Man connections almost as much as we have the BRC event itself. I guess the point was to say it's not like we don't want to be including everyone, it's just a challenge to figure this out with the event having grown in awareness.
Really, we meant no condescension and I'm sorry if it sounded as though meant to be so.

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012
Here in Central Texas we are dealing with a similar situation. Businesses are popping up along a highway, people trying to turn left are getting clobbered at record numbers. State of Texas says to get a left turn lane, the businesses along that stretch need to contribute to the cost of the road. Or enough people need to die. Getting maimed or inconvenienced isn't enough.trilobyte wrote:The real question is, what's it gonna take to get the state of Nevada to widen the damned road?
