That's a fantasy. He can't make any more tickets. In fact, in view of the recent revelation of last years overpopulation, if anything he'd revoke them. (Don't worry, that's not going to happen.) The shipping out of tickets will, possibly, loosen things up, meaning that you might be able to buy them in the usual secondary market. People are already reporting that tickets are getting easier to find.

Sorry. This has been trying and I've gotten in the habit of running around poking things that look remotely like balloons with pins. As watermelons are just coming into season, it's been pretty busy.Jenifersteppat wrote:Yes I agree, hence the statement "I have a fantasy..."

WHY END STEP
Am I the only one a bit baffled that STEP can not or will not continue after tickets are shipped.
For those of us waiting in the STEP for months now and SO CLOSE to our number being called "1219" to know we may be literally SECONDS away from HOME and the chaos take off when step is over of trying to figure out who is for real on places like Craigs List or STUB HUB or trying to plea and beg our case or trying to bump our thread on the other forums when this whole time we have waited patiently for our number.
It would seem logical and best to allow STEP to remain as a way to help those who have followed all the recommendations and stuck with this chaos to the end, and as a way to help legitimately redistribute the tickets from those who cant go to those begging to go.
PLEASE BMORG rethink ending this just because tickets are sent out.

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
Step close? No. I believe it stays open for all the people that would otherwise be picking theirs up at 'will call'. (Thousands of tickets have been purchased by burners from other countries and burners in this country that chose to have their tickets held at will call rather than mailed.) Don't give up yet.

As far as I understand it, STEP *will* continue even after the tix are sent out...it's just that the only people able to sell tix back into STEP after that point will be people who have "Will Call" tix (ie: thier physical tix will never be mailed out).
This will be a smaller pool, for sure, including: people who have bought STEP tix and now are selling them back (can't go, etc), and people who elected to have their tix held at Will Call when they first purchased thru lottery, etc.
Again, it is a bit of a bummer that the available STEP pool might shrink, but this thing is far from over: hang in there! u will make it home!

People from outside the U.S. also have their tix at will call so that is another pool to draw from. Quit panicking STEP will stay open until Aug 7/8th.

This thread is becoming a happier place every day! I've long since given up congratulating each lucky STEPchild individually -- some days it goes so fast -- but I send happy thoughts every time I see your posts here! Congratulations to all of you, and my fingers are still crossed for the rest. 12:17-ers, y'all are so close! Eeeeee!
Also: I think we can say, at this point, that STEP seems to have been fairly successful, despite all of our initial doubts. Congrats and thanks to those who are running the program!

ok so question for arnolodo and feetofclay, if you're flying and training in to the playa, where are you going to get your food and water for the week and all the other stuff you'll be needing like shelter etc?
i'm coming from florida and i decided to drive so i can pack my truck with a crap load of essentials.

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
these are totally valid questions, and ones that i have been considering carefully (read: obsessing over) for the last few months.if you're flying and training in to the playa, where are you going to get your food and water for the week and all the other stuff you'll be needing like shelter etc? i'm coming from florida and i decided to drive so i can pack my truck with a crap load of essentials.
here's the deal:
initially, i was planning to drive solo from NY to BRC just so that i'd KNOW that i had my provisions, and a way to get to the playa: load the car with food, some water (get the rest closer to playa), tent, air mattress, hoops, etc etc.
HOWEVER, the cost of gas, lodging/camping along route, and sheer TIME required kind of made me look elsewhere.
i've chosen train over plane b/c the amtrak lets u bring a TON of luggage: 3 checked bags (up to 50 lbs each), 2 carry ons (50 lb each), and u can bring a boxed bike for 5 BUCKS! and they don't search your inner anus like airlines do.
so i figure: bring almost everything i need in suitcases on train (even dry foods), rent a car when i arrive in reno, hit grocery and walmart for perishables, last minute essentials, water, etc. From there, drive to the playa.
amtrak NY to NV: about $450 round trip
rental car for about 9 days: $250-$300
not bad!!!

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
Just a heads up. It can be very difficult to rent vehicles around the time of the Burn. I know for sure that trucks and such are difficult (some places will only rent to locals around that time and get really pissed if it comes back all dusty).FeetOfClay wrote:these are totally valid questions, and ones that i have been considering carefully (read: obsessing over) for the last few months.if you're flying and training in to the playa, where are you going to get your food and water for the week and all the other stuff you'll be needing like shelter etc? i'm coming from florida and i decided to drive so i can pack my truck with a crap load of essentials.

Anyone have the same experience getting a car? I would hate for you to show up in Reno and not be able to rent anything. At the very least, I'm sure you would need to book it far in advance (if you can get one).

Good point: that is why, the SECOND i get my ticket through STEP, i will make all rental car/train/etc reservations and pay in full if need be.At the very least, I'm sure you would need to book it far in advance (if you can get one).
Seeing as I am a 12:16er, hopefully STEP will come soon, and i can make the reservations

If renting a car in Reno becomes a problem, you might consider getting off the train and renting in Salt Lake City.

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
300$ for 9 days seems low for a rental. Maybe you can get a deal at one of the littler comapnies and not the big 3. From working the Avis counter, I can tell you that car rentals can overbook just like airlines, and while that sometimes means they hand you a dented minivan instead of a compact, sometimes it means they give you nothing. (best job ever...no, not so much)
May I recommend rideshare?
I hear Reno's shopping centers near burn time can be pretty bare. The tiny communities nearby still had water when I went through. You'll be fine with that. After a week or more on the train you'll be ready to explore.
AMTRAK!!! Check online and call to be sure that there are no planned route 'problems', and keep checking. You may find yourself on a bus for part of the trip. You may also find yourself SOL at some random point along the journey.
SOoooo who can tell me which timestamp is most often used? recieved by gmail? 12:17:57 recieved? or 12:17:14 "from"?
IT MIGHT MATTER OMG.

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
Good god no. The Burn has been going on for 26(?) years now, they're ready for us (and more importantly, our money). You might not find something fancy, but all the big stores will have tons of the basics. We always stop for water & last minute items and the stores are full of Burners & the shelves are stocked.westnileraven wrote:I hear Reno's shopping centers near burn time can be pretty bare.
As for the car rental- depending on how you're getting in, there's always car-share. I know the Reno airport has one set up, don't know about Amtrak. People who stop to pick up flyers etc, usually happy to make a stop at the markets for stuff. You probably won't get a bike this way, but you will get to the Burn. When you're ready to leave, compress your goods into as small of a space as possible (somewhere Lemur has pictures showing his impossibly organized packing), write a sign on cardboard that says "airport" and hike out to Exodus. Make sure you have plenty of water & a dust mask!

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
Hi FeetOfClay, a couple of things to consider
With some car rental agencies, you could probably go ahead and reserve a car now, and just cancel the reservation no charge if things don't work out.
And don't forget that you will have to get your bike attached to, or inside of, or hanging out the back of your rental car for the trip up to the playa. Some vehicle classes can probably handle that better than others, and the rental companies don't always give you what you requested, especially when there is a run on cars as there likely is during the Burning Man timeframe. You may already have thought this through, but figured I would mention it.
Good luck with getting a ticket, we're pulling for ya!

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
My advice would be, don't rent a car, sign up here;
http://burningmanrides.com/
This was a new website last year, used by lots of burners. I signed up offering a ride to the playa anywhere from Sacramento on up, and ended up picking up the person at the Reno Airport. Worked out great for both parties. MUCH cheaper (as in, free or gas money at the most) for you, you'd most likely find someone with room for your bike, and it will be fun riding in with other burners. My passenger needed to shop for supplies in Reno, which I gladly accommodated. I dropped him off at him camp with plans to hook up for the ride out, but his friend was able to drive him instead.
Seriously, unless you plan on renting a van to sleep in, don't rent a car. You will pay $500+ for the privilege of parking it for a week.

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?
Good advice. I've worked the info booth at the Airport (AIr Playa Info). It's a blast greeting everyone and helping top match rides to riders . Assuming you're coming in on Sunday, If you HAVE a car rental, head to the airport and you'll be able to pick up passengers to help pay for gas money and gain some new friends in the bargain. There's a white board at the airport info desk for rideshares and the greeters may have their own set of notes to match people up depending on # of people, how much gear they have, if they need to make stops or not, will call or paper ticket, etc.Eric wrote: As for the car rental- depending on how you're getting in, there's always car-share. To arrange something in advance- http://rideshare.burningman.com/ridesha ... -man-2012/
Having your own car rental will def give you some peace of mind, but chances are pretty good you'll be able to get to the playa without one. Like Eric said- bring some carboard, and you'll be able to find a ride (or riders) to and from.

At 12:16 and still waiting and vigorously checking my email. I feel like a junkie. And here I thought 3 years ago that Bman was one of those life todo's. It's become a yearly todo.
Most of my friends are "taking this year off"... as if by choice. I'm remaining hopelessly optimistic.
