What would be the ramifications if for example the terms of service had identified scalping as a breech, and Borg, scrubbed entry winners suspected of scalping, like multiple tickets going to the same PO BOX, and instead of issuing a ticket. After which the scalpers receive a letter in the mail, talking about breech of TOS agreements, etc.... Stubhub, would refund those poor fools who bought from them, would the terms of service breech be enough to warrant not issuing of a ticket, without a lengthy robust legal precedent being brought against borg by scalpers?

just some questions....

Cheers,

P.S. even though scalpers may not be the main problem..

The only problem I see with the suggested system is that the people at the gate would need some kind of computer-linked scanners (so the same number doesn't get used repeatedly), and I'd expect the playa dust to destroy those quickly, leading to a massive confusion.

I just needed to jump on the board with my own idea, probably not even worth opening a new thread because somebody's already suggested it. Here 'tis:
Sell tickets to named individuals. If you buy 2 tickets, you put in the name of the person going with you. The name is BOLDLY printed on the ticket. Allow full refunds for cashing in tickets before the event. If the named person cannot go, they cannot transfer their ticket. Wouldn't take much time at the gate for greeters to check photo-id's. No transfers, no scalpers. People who forget their ID could get processed on the side, with someone having the opportunity to verify their identity (and being easy to please, as long as the person is with someone who did remember their DL and vouches for the other). BMC would then re-sell tickets, based on a computer cue (like when I reserve a popular book at the library -- it tells me my place in the cue, so I know if/when I'll likely get the book), up until maybe a week before the event. Too Big BMC Brotherish? Not particularly, since they already have the name, etc., of everyone who actually does the purchasing of a ticket.

Thanks to anyone who bothers to read this.

SandFly-
Have you considered what that does to the gate?
In order for names on tickets to work, it will add time @ gate. Lets lowball and call it 10 seconds.
in another thread I wrote:10 seconds per ticket x 53,000 tickets= An extra 8834 hours at the gate.

That's assuming that there are no problems and every ticket inspection only takes 10 seconds. Let's call 15% of the ticket interactions 'difficult'. We'll say they take 60 seconds each.

The problem interactions now add another 6625 hours to the gate operations.

So far, that's an extra 15,459 man-hours at the gate. At 4 hour long shifts, that's an extra 3865 volunteers gate needs.

How big is your camp? Got an extra 3000 volunteers? I'm sure we can find the other 865 no problem.

If the crew were instructed to make only the most perfunctory check of the name, it could take the same time as the person spent staring at my ticket to see if it were fake. All we really need is the threat, which would keep people from being willing to pay high prices to scalpers and taking any risk of not being allowed in.

Correct me if I am wrong:

Are you saying that the borg should start a massive system of putting the names on tickets, but then not really put any effort into checking the names at the door?

Because that seems to me to be an enormous waste of money. Create an anti-scalping scheme and then don't really use it.

I have an alternative anti-scalping technique. It requires no additional costs, and is 100% Participant driven.

Step 1-DON'T BUY A TICKET OVER FACE VALUE.

There are much more efficient ways to check the name that could take even less than 10 seconds, but the simplest approach is random scanning. When the line is long you only check one name in 5, or whatever you need to make it happen. Willing to come with a ticket without your name (or more likely your face) keyed to it, and take anywhere from a 20% chance of being turned away at busy times and a 100% chance at less busy times? I don't think many would, and it kills the scalper market.

what sort of math is that? i get 530,000 secs / 3600 sec/hr == 147 hours. not 8834...

drop by Math Camp sometime and we'll sort you out... :-)

Great scott! I drop an entire line!

I'll drop the math since I flubbed that, but stand by the fact that adding names add time at the gate.

Packelet, you want to revise those numbers for me? I clearly need more coffee....
