Burning Man Lotto is UNFAIR! No LOTTO!
Re: Burning Man Lotto is UNFAIR! No LOTTO!
You have to choose the price point at the time of registration for the lottery, therefore it would stand to reason that the higher price tiers would give you the greatest chance of getting tickets as many will probably choose the lower price tiers and register for those tickets. Whose to say how many tickets are available at each tier and if this amount would fluctuate relative to how many people register at that price point. Burning Man is now a business and this sounds like a great way to make money...the only reason to change the current system. It certainly does not to make it easier for participants. Anyone that wanted a ticket could have bought one with the previous system. It was the people who waited to buy tickets at the gate that lost out. The same thing will happen with the new system if the "lottery" sells out and there are no tickets at the gate. Is this what we can look forward to from the "non-profit" Burningman Project?

As opposed to raising the ticket price to $400, which the market may well bear...

Who were the idiots who decided to "unveil" this on JRS without having any firm specifics. No one has any idea whats going. Everyone I know is now worried that they won't be able to get a ticket at all since the minimal details suggest if you don't win the lottery for the pricing tier you've selected you didn't get tickets. Others see a corporate conspiracy. I mean jesus Christ couldn't they have announced this with all the details and fine points. As it is now I don't know whether to be outraged, not give a shit, or bag the whole fucking event this year... I mean its ridiculous.
Honestly, this sounds as much like a dutch auction as it does a lottery. They're basically trying to scare people into paying more for the tickets because there will obviously be more competition for the lower tiers. The whole system sounds really poorly thought-out but then there are crucial details missing who knows what the fuck is going on....

And if they had the details solidly worked out, everyone would be complaining that "the community" hadn't had enough input. Face it, the llc is damned if they do and damned if they don't. I don't much like them, but I sure recognize that their lives and decisions are watched under an utterly ridiculous magnifying glass.

im not down with the lotto. first come first serve is the fairest way to go. just upgrade the servers to handle the traffic. the people who are truely down will be ready

Rather than discussing this among ourselves, we should be sending emails to BMORG. Are there specific individuals and email addresses we can send our concerns to? I can't think of any advantage of the lottery system. Are they betting that people will apply for the higher priced tier on the assumption that the odds will be better for getting tickets? If the event is selling out, perhaps there should be a uniform price for all of the tickets to avoid the "gold rush" mentality when the ticket sales have started and everyone is trying to get on the lower tier.

Keep your pants on, Leo. As per the JRS announcement, DO NOT EMAIL them, wait for the program details and the FAQ to be posted. Besides, until you actually know the details of the program, you don't have the ability to make an intelligent, informed decision.

I don't want to keep my pants on. That's one of the reasons I enjoy being at Burning Man!

Lottery Shmottery. Does it really matter? Is anyone REALLY going to get shut out? Here's a bet, and I'm willing say it right now; There will be LESS people at the Burn then in 2011. I have nothing concrete to base that on, but lots of events have spike years and then fall back. And by the way, I wonder how many people didn't get to go last year. I had three people in my camp who didn't buy in time. They all found face value tix once the hysteria died down. I am more than willing to wait and see what this system brings before I start bashing it. Who knows? We may be praising it in a few months.

Well, last year I lost an entire morning of internet pornography viewing.
I spent the entire morning watching the count down and fretting, afraid to touch my...browser in case I somehow screwed up my position in line.
With this system, I have WEEKS of WORRY FREE... browsing.

Yeah, but you had an afternoon of waiting for the servers to come back up to get cozy with Handgela. And don't tell me it wasn't great blowing your load the moment you got the confirmation that the ticket was purchased.
