Marian Goodell (Maid Marian) on the Ticket Situation

Post by Eric » Thu Feb 09, 2012 12:57 pm

An interview from this morning. There are still no hard numbers on the amount of requests, but she did say demand was about double what they expected (without saying exactly what they expected)

Captains log, stardate 50893.5. The moment I have dreaded for nearly six years has finally arrived. The Borg, our most lethal enemy [appear to genuinely care about the community], and this time there may be no stopping them.

VERY nice find! I actually caught the last half of this live and even called the station directly to inquire about a transcript, but was told that it wouldn't be available for a few days..

BTW.. it's "Goodell", not "Goddell"..

Interesting.
The only thing that I find hard to believe is that the demand to go to BM would increase to over 80,000. Just defies common sense (well, at least it defies my common sense).

Consider that tickets sold in previous years didn't represent desire to go, but the actual ability to go. Consider we're starting to come out of a major economic slump that has depressed the ability to go for the last few years.
Our growth from 2000 to 2008 was 9% per year, if the economy hadn't knocked us down, and 9% growth continued then we would be online for 70,000 people this year. Add to that, that tickets to burning man are a minor part of the cost of actually going, you're guaranteed to be able to resell later so there is no reason not to bid if you have any interest in going. Toss in a few thousand scalpers and a demand of 80,00 is quite doable.

Edit: 2000 and 2008 were the exit year from the dot com bubble and the starting year of the current mishegoss. if we just take the "good years" trend from 2001 to 2007, then its 10.8% growth and 79000 people this year.

A demand of 80k is entirely plausible in my mind. I personally know around 10 burgins going this year.. and I'm just one of the 54k attendees from last year.

Factors would/could include:

- The beloved Places You'll Go viral video with over 1.2 million hits
- Heightened sense of needing to do this now after last years sellout
- Better economic times (for some)
- Word steadily spreading across the masses (think how many people you personally have mentioned BM to just in the last year..)
- etc etc

Easy 80k. Easy.

I would guess they would have "expected" around 80,000 ticket requests since probably 60K wanted to buy last year and you add for scalpers and oversubscribers, which they must have expected.

This implies they got 160,000 or more ticket requests in the lottery for 40,000 tickets.

I have to say, when they saw this, they probably wanted to not do the lottery as it was obviously going the wrong way, but may not have left themselves the legal option not to do it. I hope they tried not to do it, but people might have been able to sue if they didn't.

Getting from 80k demand to 160k tickets in the lottery is as easy as I put in for 2 tickets, my girl puts in for 2 tickets, when we only need 2 tickets between us, with enough people signing up mom and pop and the grands and the dog to balance out the honest people. This is probably what they were actually expecting as it is the logical result of a lottery, it makes things messy for a while, but smooths out as people trade as long as actual demand is less than supply.

I suspect actual demand for tickets is in the 60K range. BMOrg actually can probably calculate this. They know when they sold out, and they know in each year what fraction of total tickets sold before and after that date, including sales at the gate when they happened. In 2011 there was more pressure to buy early, so the fraction bought late might have dropped a bit, but anyway, they should have a pretty good idea of last year's demand even though they stopped selling, and probably some idea of the demand increase this year. I would love to hear the real number, I am just guessing it is in that range.

Im not sure how most Burners didnt see this coming last year when they sold out. I got my tickets in the presale in December. Whats an extra $50 to ensure that you are going home again. But my camp is still short 3 Tickets.

My art car (The Movement Of Jah People) is under construction and will be ready for the Playa in Aug.
There is something special about Burning Man and I'm frightened by those who don't see it.

No way. Think about it..

Last year we sold out around 53k with what we guessed was about 3k-6k of people left without tickets. That would mean a total growth of 1k-4k.

No way. Way, way higher.

I agree with JS. You also can't compare it to other years because in the past people were buying tickets "whenever", there wasn't any urgency until last years sell-out. This year people "knew" they had to get their orders in on the front end, which would drive more people to the sale.

As a couple of us have shown in another thread it only takes about 70,000 people requesting 1.7 tickets each to create demand for 120,000 tickets. Only a third of people got them, which means 23,000 (ish) people ended up with 40,000 tickets, and 47,000 (ish) people ended up with none.

Figures are, of course, all guesses; but based on the interview at the top of this thread we know that demand was at least double what they expected (we just don't know the number they expected)

NPR Radio Interview about BMan; BMORG updates soon!

Post by FeetOfClay » Thu Feb 09, 2012 5:19 pm

Just checked out a recent NPR interview with Marian Goodell about the ticket situation:
http://www.capradio.org/169517

(thanks very much to Halcyon for posting a link to this on his latest blog post)

anyway, toward the end of the interview, Marian states that updated info about tickets and such will be sent out "later today or early tomorrow", and I believe the interview happened today...so I guess some updates are coming down the pike as we speak? :D

I would say it's the reverse. In 2010 the event did not sell out, all the way to opening day. I don't know the numbers but BMOrg knows how many bought before August and how many bought in August. I would presume the number buying in August was modest but I don't actually know. But let's assume it was 10%.

In 2011, people were told many times, "get tickets soon, it may sell out." I don't know if they listened. If they did not listen, then 90% had bought by sell-out day. If they did listen, it would be more like 95% who had bought by sell out day. This means the unlimited audience for 2011 would be in the range of 3,000 to 6,000 more than the cap. That's a lot of event growth but a reasonable number.

In 2012, with ordinary event growth, total demand would be less than 60,000. If we forecast strong event growth it would be higher, but not much higher. If 70,000 wanted tickets this year that's the greatest growth in many years.

Of course, far more than 70,000 tickets were requested, more like 150,000 but there are still probably only around 60,000 who want to go.

So Brad, by your own admission.. 2011 demand was 56k-59k.

You feel intellectually comfortable looking me in the virtual eye and saying that only 1k-4k more people want to come this year than last year?

Again.. absolutely no way. Way, way more.

hi--

i apologize for a redundant post...did not realize that this had been posted already :(

to be honest, i must say what i am feeling right now:
this was my first post EVER on E-playa.
i meant no harm, only meant to be helpful.
having read posts on here for weeks now, i was looking forward to registering, so that i could PARTICIPATE in the forums.

when i listened to the NPR interview, my first thought was to post about it on here to be helpful:
assuming that perhaps others had not heard it, i wanted to share this info.

i got excited to see 2 replies to my post, and then saddened and hurt that both replies were basically to shoot me down,
and react to my post as an annoyance.

again, i meant only to be helpful.
gotta say, not feeling too welcomed on here right now.

Don't know anything about the Lakers--I'm bad with sports!

I guess I could say "how 'bout them Giants", as the recent Superbowl is about the extent of my sports knowledge.

And, yes, I know this ^ is completely off topic. but seeing as you are the first person on here who has been kind to me (or at least not overtly mean), I am going to make pleasant conversation with you.

to be honest, i am not sure if registering on here was a mistake? i am not feeling too welcome...

you ARE surely welcome..

but..

there is etiquette in any community and pretty much any online forum/bbs considers that one should look around to see if the topic is covered already before posting (this has been true for well over 20 years)..

it is understandable to be excited to share something..

...but, also, it should be understandable that some of the people who are already a part of that community end up frowning upon people who havnt seemed to have looked around to see how things work... finding out what has already been covered before a newcomer jumps in can go a long way to fitting in to the community, because it shows they took the time to become a part of what was already ongoing...

again! you are welcome.. indeed, most anyone who did this would get the same reaction.. so it surely aint personal..

just stick around, read stuff... see what we're talking about already.. and when youve caught up on a few days, or more.. of stuff.. and you see that a topic you feel isnt covered elsewhere go right ahead and post another fresh thread about it..

welcome to eplaya!
