Burn Barrels outside of camp?

Post by --Ever-- » Mon Sep 07, 2015 10:47 pm

What are the guidelines regarding burn barrels outside of a camp? For example, can someone just drop a barrel in the deep playa? What about near'ish someone else's artwork?

I ask because we decided to take ours down after smoking out our neighbors (the winds battered their camp with smoke). It crossed my mind that we could take it to the playa to enjoy with strangers, but I'm not sure the rules surrounding it beyond basic guidelines (burn scar prevention, basic fire handling, lights for the night time, etc).

Basically, no.
Guidelines for open fires, burn barrels, tiki torches etc within theme camps:
No fire barrels or open fires shall be left unattended. At least one camp member will be designated fire tender and be within visual distance at all times. If found unattended while lit, open fires or burn barrels may be extinguished and/or confiscated if there is sufficient hazard.
If winds pick up, all open fires must be put out immediately and burn barrels must be extinguished if they begin to throw sparks.
Open fire above 10 feet tall shall be secured from the wind and the safety perimeter increased appropriately.
Open fire or burn barrels must be extinguished at the request of any Ranger or Emergency Services personnel.
A 20-foot Zone around the fire must be free of any flammable materials, such as but not limited to: cloth, paper, tents, plastic, etc.
All liquid fuels must be kept at least 50 feet away from any open flame. Please check out the guidelines for the storage of fuels at Burning Man.
A supply of at least 5 gallons of water must be kept on hand to extinguish the fire in case of high winds (wind can blow embers and sparks a long distance on the playa!) or other hazards.
Burn barrels shall be secured and constructed in a way that the burning surface is at least 6 inches from the playa to prevent baking of the playa surface.
Note: please remember that gasoline is a dangerous fuel to use to start fires. Explosive vapors can instantly build up as it is applied and as the fire is lit it can flash and burn you!

So as long as all those are met, it's OK to burn a barrel outside of your personal camp (deep playa, inner playa, etc)?

Seems simple to meet all those requirements.

A burn barrel out in the playa is MOOP in itself. So no.

Worse it is a moop generator.

Enough burners are stupid, that they will put burnables in any burn barrel they find, to the point they suffocate the fire. This has happened in our village. When burning wood, you will get an ash field which has to be demooped.

People will also be extra stupid and put garbage and non-burnables in them. Then you have a big mess of hot ashes and garbage and probably a pile of garbage around it.

Also, it means that when you stop the fire, someone will have to stay near that barrel to make sure all rules are followed for hours--more than overnight--until it's cool enough to pack into your vehicle to drive home.

Again, basically no. You would need to stay with it until it was out completely, plus haul the necessary fire suppression stuff, and do the mooping. We all know that is not happening. Plus, if you put it near an art installation, how do you know the artist even wants it there?
