Nuclear War and the 2022 Burning Man Event

Post by The Rod » Tue Mar 15, 2022 6:31 pm

As far as BRC itself is concerned, I'm highly doubtful that it would be a target for a strategic strike in the event of potential nuclear escalation as a result of the current deteriorating relationship between the owners of the worlds largest nuclear arsenals. However, it is in proximity to a few significant military targets. So even if the unthinkable were to happen, we might have to worry about nuclear fall-out harshing our mellow as we gather (or attempt to) in Black Rock City. As has been suggested in the past when we as a community faced a dire and existential threat, once again, the solution:

All of the recent proliferation of online videos on how to use all of the different anti-tank missiles, could contribute to taking Safety Third to fourth or even fifth place. Could get nasty.
"There goes an art car without enough lights!"
"There goes a shirt-cocker towards kidsville!"
"There's someone trying to sneak in past the trash-fence!"
"He stole my Yellow Bike!"
"Another f'n D.J. ..."
"They're taking too long to light The Man"
"Is that a PnP camp?"

^ All valid reasons to justify a javelin strike.

Personally, I would welcome the militarization of Black Rock City. Bring back the drive by shooting range, but this time we have rocket launchers.

Now I'm conflicted. It's a bad idea, but hey! It's a bad idea!
Would sure ruin my vehicle's interior, even with the opposite windows open. Remove headliner (and eyebrows) in three, two, one... Need a roof hatch on my current ride. Could sit up there and steer with my feet (I've never done this. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.) Whole new meaning to Roof Rack.

Well if you’re reluctant to discharge an RPG or anti-armor missile from inside your personal vehicle, perhaps we can arrange a loaner. Courtesy of the Russian federation and liberated by our Ukrainian Comrades.

Just gotta sort out the customs paperwork on importing captured military assets…

I don't think your camp/MV insurance covers war. How it interprets acts of God on the playa can only be found after the fact.

If anyone ever does a drive-by target range on the playa using ground-to-* rockets/missiles, we're going to need acts of God.

Lead-lined zorbs, of course :D

If the price weren't already at crazy levels due to panic-buying, iodine tablets would make the perfect playa gift. :D

In all seriousness, Crude Awakening was one of the most intense fire moments I've ever been witness to. Fun fact, it was the same kind of thermobaric blast (ior fuel-air bomb) that made a lot of early headlines in Ukraine...

This was a pretty good explosion...and topical. Planned explosion at the burning of Nuclear Dream at Burning Man August 28, 2014-Black Rock Desert, Nevada.

Along with the car shish ka bob thingy from 2019, Crude Awakening is the largest burning man piece of FOMO for me. Wish I coulda seen it…

I think it was called "night at the climb in" or something along those lines. It was a great piece, but with danger at every step, it was shut down far too early.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

The official name was Shish Car Bob.

Shut down too early, but after way way too many injuries. Double digits on broken bones, and we'll never know how much tetanus was served :D

Fun fact, if you made it to the trailer at the very top, at least at the beginning of the event, there was a little whiskey bar inside. I know, that probably doesn't help with the FOMO aspect...

the Wedge! yes, you could just stand at the bottom and watch the skin skid marks appear as people fell off the cardboard as they came down......and the screams and pain at the bottom. ugh.
But, well to me, that's the whole idea. Burning Man should promote Darwinism...there are not many places natural selection, for humans, still exist.

some light reading for your sunday morning.. It's an older analysis and was written before the introduction of hypersonic weapons, but does a good job of debunking a lot of the myths surrounding the contemporary nuclear threat.

TLDR: If it came to nuclear escalation, US and it's allies (NATO) would likely spank the shit of Russia, though we might lose NYC or Albuquerque in the process...

I agree, with emphasis on "might"......Russian and Chinese high tech weaponry has proven to be marginal, at best.
And I'd consider, "we" have weapons that the public does not know about. Not that I'd invite nukes, or not freak the hell out if it happened, but I'd not put money on any of their ICBM type stuff making it and working, and certainly not enough to "flatten" the U.S.
That said, the fallout and such would still be horrible...

Here is my TL:DR - Let’s say the crazy Russian actually uses a tactical nuke in Ukraine to clear out them brand new howitzers we sent over.

The West will do Jack Shit beyond the endless outrage and condemnation.

Thought and Prayers, baby!

Maybe we cut the oil and gas funding for his war machine, probably send more guns, Turkey would certainly close the Bosphorus, and an all out embargo on the Ruskies …

But it would not be a proportional response.

One crazy is one too many for this world.
