Yea, that's the next task. Getting that canopy up on the frame by myself was challenging on a cool day with no wind. I was constantly afraid I'd bust a rib by pulling on the canopy too hard trying to slide it over the frame. I made a fiberglass pole with a hook on the end that lets me grab a grommet and lift up instead of pulling sideways and that seemed to help a lot.

I'm hoping to do a complete tear down and rebuild this weekend but unfortunately the weather is supposed to be lovely.

Leap it's great that you get to buy water when you buy your ticket. Are you getting those collapsible water containers? Where are you camping? Is anyone going to be there to meet you and schlep your stuff? I wonder where the water will be dispensed.

This morning I'm still working on my tarp alterations. I have to work 3 more days at my job filling in, then I'll have some spare time. A $4 Harbor Freight grommet kit really sucks.

Ratty I am hoping since my arrival is Saturday, I can borrow a car or a get a ride to haul it if my camp is far away. I don't know where Big Puffy Yellow, where I plan to camp, requested for placement. Do you know if it's kosher to drive on the streets pre-gate? There is some sort of shuttle service from the bus depot that goes out E and J. So either way I should be fine.

I do have the 5 gallon collapsable water bags. I figure 2 of them and a few trips for ice over the week will suffice (I'm Saturday to Saturday).

There are a lot of us there early. Maybe you can get some help from us. (I don't know my work schedule yet.) The B &B doesn't arrive on time but it should be closer to schedule on Saturday with no highway traffic to hold it up. Normally the big shuttle bus takes people down G street and drops em off. Hopefully it'll do that on Saturday. Will your camp, (Big Yellow), be there early too?

A $4 Harbor Freight grommet kit really sucks.

Ratty: Brass grommets put a big hole in the tarp and are really hard to get secured evenly weakening the tarp. You might try these tarp grabbers, I built my MH with them. I have a piece of nylon filament tape on both sides and punched a small hole for the spike to go through. Put the pieces together and tap with a hammer to secure them.

I talked with a few E-Playans who said these hold up really well on playa and I can vouch first hand they are certainly easier to work with than trying to crimp brass grommets.

Thanks zig-zag. I'm taking pictures and preparing a thread on tarp sizing. I'll try and check these out. Also the clamp on ones work great it there is a rope in the edge binding for it to hang on to. Film at 11.

Ratty, yes they will have EA campers/builders (I plan on helping). They are a laid back crew and haven't announced the who-does-what-and-where yet, but I know they will be there.

Spend the extra couple of bucks on a good grommet kit.

Put a strip of gorilla tape over/under the spot where you will install your grommet and you'll be golden.

The whole "man burns in less than 90 days" phrase was not really sinking in until I started reading this thread. Eeeek. I haven't even set up the new tent yet! I need to pull both bikes down off the hanger hooks and check the tires. I spent some time in April redoing my lists for this year, so that's at least a start. Aieee.

figjam, I didn't buy that cheap grommet kit but I do own one. The cutting pipe is only sharp enough to make a donut hole. My good grommet kit is for much smaller pieces. I'm way too busy to do it now. Next week for sure. I could just stick a wood-burning tool through the poly tarp to make the holes. Yummie burning plastic smell.

Paid off one credit card for vehicle stuff. Paid half of total on second credit card for the wrong size tires. Saving up to purchase correct size tires. $315 for 4 each 225 75 R15 white-walls. The 215 60 R15s are too small, looks like a low-rider. I Paid off my monthly bills and I have $108 extra for safety expenses. In July I'll have enough to pay off second card and buy tires. I have enough " stuff " after 11 years of burning-man. In August I'll have enough for the LI-Ticket and travel expense. I have been able to budget my monthly $908 SSI and Supplemental by being frugal.

Although I am now on Medicare, my health expenses are going up ( co-pays for meds ). MediCal does not pay for some things, if you have Medicare. My ills are chronic, knock on wood. Just 3 months til TTITD. Time for more ice-cream, it has been over 100 F. this week in Northern California, keeping cool. Ta-ta for now.

I get tired of moving my ice chest out of the sun so....I made a cover for one of my roll-up aluminum tables. I'll just move the shade instead. It's open on 2 sides so I can fit it over the chest if I want. What the heck, the material was begging to be folded up into pockets. By the end of the week I'll have a nice pocket full of playa. It is tied to the legs in two places. Now I can sleep in and not worry about my ice melting.

Changed the oil and cleaned the spark plugs and air filters on my two Honda generators. Surprisingly little playa dust in the air filters-probably due to them being run in a protected, sound-capturing enclosure. (Even though they are both very quiet on their own)

I don't run them that much-after two years on the playa, and occasional power outages at home or outside construction projects, I only have 62 operating hours on each genny.

I painted all my rebar candycanes. Everything rusts here in the Northland and I figure if they are red, I can find them easily in the playa dust. Besides, they are candycanes dammit, they should be red!

zig-zag, Those are beautiful. I've never seen so many identical candy canes. Hey. What is going to happen to all the candy caned rebar now that people are switching over to lags.
