Favorite things to gift away or receive

I've been thinking of gifting small pillows, with a logo of the man either sewn on as a patch or stamped into it maybe, and a little elastic wrist strap.

Haven't tried sewing one yet though.

According to the Land Management Plan, there's rock collecting and even a Geode mine in the greater National Conservation Area that includes the Playa. I think that that would be a great thing for a local rockhound to give out. Not quite a piece fo the Playa, but darn close.

I decided that this year I'm going to gift tamales. Thy fit in a pocket, are good hot or cold, and when you're finished you can burn the husks.

Plus it gives me an excuse to walk around in my taco costume.

for gift giving/receiving i think i'd want to give/get something funcional, something either wearable of useable would be great that someone put a bit of thier own special majic into.... and if it had a name or a little personal logo thing or something neat, that would be really cool too...

i want to make something to give to people, maybe lots of things... ill probably end up just trading and giving away half of what i bring to people i meet and fall in love with...

jewelery is always great, clothing, bags, random camping supplies...

im gonna bring lots of paint and markers so i can leave a bit of me for anyone who wants it...

and i love getting special gifts from people who i want to remember, those and pictures are great...

but the best part of any trip is the memories you bring back, along with the gifts which help you remember...

Are people sick of keychains and/or beaded items? I know last year I offered someone a beaded keychain and they were like "Thanks, but I have enough beads already". Not sure what to do this year. I still have a lot of keyrings and beads in my box, but not sure if I should start getting creative or find a new thing to make.

My wife found brandnew sun glasses at a seond hand store. They are the wrap around kind and block out 100% of the bad stuff. We picked up 75 pairs at 15 cents each. I know that they are something bought but you will find alot of people who may need a pair of good sunglasses.

Nice find hunter42! You could always do something to personalize the sunglasses like paint a small B-Man logo on the bridge or temples.

One of the gift items I'm doing is a Black Rock City post card of my own design with a 50's kind of feel to it. This is our first burn but we have close friends that are veterans and we've been studying the event for years. We've got a lot of gift ideas and some are more involved than others. My advice would be don't be afraid to explore and try new ideas. That's what it's all about after all!

That's the best idea I've heard yet, the postcards. Me being an (amature) photographer... it's so wide open. You could do so many things. I've been trying to come up with something creative and extremely cheap, but my mind's blank. If I had some extra $ I'd do something along the postcard lines. I wonder, do you plan on making them all individual or with all the same design? Either way, sounds awsome. I hope they come out well... I want one!

I had a gift rack on dogma, in front of Hushville. Had it for two years running. I put out some of my homemade things, some useful things. I only took a couple things for myself: a marvelous patch, a nice handmade notebook, a glass bead bracelet. I had to sit on my newbie niece one year; every time someone would stop, she'd go running out to see what was there. I had to explain after she'd gotten a couple nice things, to let it alone; the rack was not a collection plate for cool stuff for us, it was a distribution center for everyone else. The morning after the burn we could see where someone had tried to set it on fire, likely caught up in a burning moment: wow, fire would be a great gift! Probably not bringing it this year; I get to haul home a sack of dusty toys and melted food afterwards. I'm eventually going to make an art project out of all the gift rack trash I have left over.

Stuff I've made: fimo pendants, painted wooden treasure boxes, painted glass pendants, painted glass gems, decorated tins, smiley dust masks, fridge magnets, postcards, a bag of lingerie and costumes for the boutique. Some things I handed out, other things were left on the gift rack. This year my friend and I are making wire-wrap pendats from glass beads and gemstones. I'm going to individually paint a few beads, but mostly they're just nice lttle pieces of jewelry.

The anonymous gift is one of my favorites, as is the on the move on a bike gift. I had a really cool pendant tossed in my lap as we pedaled our four-wheeler around.

I saw the resin pendants, a campmate had one ... very, very nice.

Other favorite gifts: a raku (?) goddess pendant from whistleworks. Wow. And a lovely couple in center cafe gave me a ruby-red glass pendant etched with "Beyond Belief." I must have a thing for jewelry.

FWIW, I hate gifts as-implemented at Burning Man. All of them. I've never seen anything I could possibly use or want to keep on the mantle for more than a hazy three-day hangover. Even the throwing knives DPW used to hand out were cheap-ass Paki knock-offs -- I kid you not, I had one on the dashboard and it warped in the sun like a potato chip. I've seen too much and too many "gifts" left on the playa after the event to be happy about them at all. I don't need your silly Mardi Gras beads. Ever.

My favorite gift is sweat. It's biodegradable, and sometimes an hour's worth is as good as a day's. Check in at Playa Info in Center Camp, ask who might need volunteers, grab a hammer, pliers, and some gloves, and it's just a sweaty, gifting, trip.

Really, step back and think about these trinket "gifts". They DO SUCK!

I gift drinks. With good booze in them. And ice.
I carry large quantities of very cold icewater on the boat, for whoever needs a hit.

I like stickers. And food. There's a gift. MMmmmmmmm... food.

Chai Guy is on the right track. Even if he hates art cars. (Chai, I'm gonna look for you this year and let you drive mine.) And the sunglasses thing, we brought a big boxfull too, very popular, everyone needs them, can't go wrong there.

Well, I threw in what I didn't like so much...

I'm not enough of an ass to spit on someone who gives me a bead necklace. Hell, I don't know Chai Guy, but I gather from his posts that he's kind of anti-mutant-vehicle, putting me on the opposite side of the fence with him. I plan on trying to find him this year on the playa to let him drive mine, and hopefully try some chai (never had it)...

I still do think some "gifts" suck and could be left out, but if you meet me out there, I'm still gonna give you a margarita, or icewater, or hot coffee, or an outer playa tour... I'm still gonna be glad to hang out with you, even if I don't really want a necklace.

Of course if you are going to gift trinkets make sure they are good ones.

These babies are pleasing to hold and will come in handy for those trans-Playa conga lines. They can double as shaman's rattles for cursing Grinches or bad drivers who almost kill the recipient on the drive home.

The best gift, by far, that I've received on the playa was on my Birthday. Last year I had gathered and trekked with my playa buddies to "large art" area, near the chandelier, where there was the barbers chair looking into the mirror. As I was sitting there with my birthday crown on and friends gathered around thinking, "there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be right now,” an anonymous man came and took a Polaroid picture of our reflection. It came out great. If that guy, who ducked out of sight, only new how much I love that picture. Talk about capturing a special moment!

There were several gifts that really tickled me: super treat from the lady handing out icees by the cafe, ice cold fresh fruit pieces from the neighbor campers, mondo 15" red glostick from a fireman on burn night and a cool cube light and glowball from others that all got stuck onto my trike : ) its green flashing elwire must have tranced them! Then the nifty shaft jewelry (heheh) from one cute guy by Pinky's, the adopt-a-troll (who is coming back to this burn on the dashboard), and a decorated clothes pin with "you've been spotted!" on it that somebody snuck onto my hat and I didn't even notice till late at night back at camp. The visual "gifts" of people daring to be wild and colorful...these are best of all!

I gave one of your rocks to a friend of mine, and she loves it! She carries it in her purse, so when she feels stressed or blue, she holds onto it for a few minutes and thinks of the playa. : )
