Hopefully - for the good of everyone - this will be the year that LEOs will crack down on stupidity.

And the second it happens the whining will commence, followed by protests and then the shitstorm will begin. Be careful what we wish for. What one gets sometimes carries with it the unexpected.

That being said I have to agree with Iso, there's a bunch of things that happen out there that don't need to and a light crackdown would be of great benefit.

This topic takes me back to the movie 'Men in Black', where Will Smith is going through the shooting range & isn't gunning for the criminals - he shoots the little girl with the Quantum Physics book - Obviously up to no good...

So to answer your question, there is a 66% chance the LEO's in 2010 will be going after the spiritual sect - Meditators, Healers, Sober Attendees, Volunteers (and they will not discriminate based on what they're volunteering for)...

Law enforcement will crack down on people based on the car they drive. It appears that they care less about helpng a 20 and a half year old person from drinking, as they do the revenue and fines that it generates for themselves.
They will follow the money this year and only be stopping and searching expensive vehicles and leave the old hippie vehicles alone, since most hippies are poor.

Is being a hippie the wrong kind of self expression? I didn't know there was a wrong kind of self expression. Perhaps hippies could force themselves to have a different self identity and value system. That's it? They could force themselves to conform with somebody else's self identity and value system? That's the burning man way?

Shambala, thanks for the reasoned reply. Also, if they are going to profile rich looking vehicles, I should have nothing to worry about.

Okay, are we talking about L.E. trolls who will post provocative statements or L.E.s trawling for ideas for what they can do?
Because Law Enforcement reads this board. And I'm surprised that we got to the second page before mentioning this fact.

Hippies are the Goldsteins of this "community". And I'm quite as much responsible as anyone else.
There are several reasons for this. There is a certain strain of hippie that believes in "Miracle Tickets" and go (I may have the idiom wrong here) "Clothed in Love" and essentially expect other people to pay their way, feed them, water them, and other wise take care of their worthless asses. The people who do the heavy lifting in this community work hard all year long and naturally do not want freeloaders taking advantage of their hard work. In fact, free-loaders have never been particularly beloved in any community.

There is also a perhaps generational or other tension between hippies and members of other counter-cultures. Burningman has roots in 1980s San Francisco artist culture and in some ways closer to punk culture than hippie culture. It's a different basic view of the world and isn't necessarily comfortable co-existing.

So, being a hippie is a real form of self-expression. If it is your form, than be aware that some people find it cloying, dependent and obnoxious; and be prepared to walk on, or work hard, or be a little rough edged in your attitude, depending on what you want from the situation.

In addition to the perceived and often demonstrated massive entitlement complex they have, I think a lot of animosity directed towards this era's neo-hippies stems from the aftermath of traditional neo-hippie gatherings.

Like Rainbow gatherings. Many of them are one step away from being granted super fund clean up status when they are over. A land owner in Texas allowed such a group onto his property and spent 6 months and several thousand dollars cleaning and restoring his land from what amounted to a relatively small event.

The ignorance of the regulars on this board makes my skin crawl. There are some really disgusting people associated with Burning Man and for some reason almost all of them use this forum daily. They're the only real burners, and hippies and Canadians and pretty much anyone else they can label need to be kicked in the face with a steel toed boot and never allowed to be part of "their community". Go fuck yourselves, intolerant trolls.

As for law enforcement, they'll be following the money, indeed. I've never personally had a run-in with them, but it does bother me that we run a peaceful, safe, self-governed event as far away from population as we can so as not to offend anyone, and yet they follow us out into the middle of nowhere to make sure we aren't putting any THC into our brains. They care about us that much, I guess.

This year, all the raver head eTards and kTards will switch to an alternative form of pill popping. Suppository!

LEOs will ficus in on anyone found smelling their finger, especially if the just pulled their hands out of the fun-fur wedgie.

Anyone caught with a Dirty Sanchez or sniffing the finger will be subject to probable cause search, seizure and arrest.

Remember, you heard it here first folks.

Oh, and remember kids, use a water based lubricant like K-Y Jelly, not Vaseline. Petroleum based lube coats pills and time releases the pills. Go balls out!

Dude, are you bringing down some righteous BC bud? Are you gonna bring enough to share with us?

All we got down here in the US is moldy Mexican brown stuff that smells like ass.

Oh, and watch out, we may have already met our Canadian quota for the year, few weeks back. Double check on your vaccinations and make sure they are all current.

You're using a very wide stereotyping brush with a comment like that. If this place sucks so much...instead of bitching why not find a better place to spend your time? It's not like the internet has a shortage of forums and places to go.

Your statement seems to suggest a mutual exclusivity between the two where none exists.

BTW, there's nothing as cute as a fired up Canadian losing his cool. Kind of sexy actually.

Of course, what I really hate about hippies is the sexuality. You know, "I believe in Free Love so you have to have sex with me." I swear, of the people who would have been most likely to sleep with me when I was under-aged and they weren't, just about all of them were hippies. Still makes my skin crawl.

And hey! The event is safe! Good, I can finally stop reading the back of my ticket.

Some of you might want to learn about the diggers, the only group that I would unequivocally call part of the hippies, left after 1967.
Some of the weirdness around now, never existed even back then.

The diggers were tireless gifters, believing in community and expecting nothing but to help.
Some were around for a long time, even more amazing.

So that's what I remember about the hippies.

You still meet people like that now and again, so not just a product of the time.
Still amazing.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. In addition to the offending poster, the noun troll can also refer to the provocative message itself, as in "that was an excellent troll you posted". While the term troll and its associated action trolling are primarily associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels highly subjective, with trolling being used to describe intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, recent media accounts have used the term troll to describe "a person who defaces internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."
