Sooo... a map! with eplayan's locations! I like it a lot.

I met quite a few of you at the M&G, and got to spend a little bit of time with some of you during the week.

I found a couple of your camps, but no one was home and then randomly happened upon Sicpup's camp one morning (it was the lions that clued me in!) *hi sicpup!*

A map is an excellent plan..thanks, Ratty. The random wandering is fun, but wandering while on a mission to hunt you guys down will be even better.

Patsh wrote:I love this idea!

This year, I had only a limited number (79) of pendants to give away, and wanted to be sure that all my friends (most of whom are on ePlaya) would get one. So, I made a list. To my surprise, there were 86 names!!! So, I made a map of where lots of people were camping. As I found them, their names were crossed off the list. By Wednesday's M&G, at least half were already given away, and most of the rest went that night.

By Sunday night, I had one pendant left, and 8 names. That night, I found Schtev, who had been adopted into our camp by my sister, Delle (last year). He was the last on the list to get a pendant, and (fortunately) the last one I saw from the list.

What absolutely Blew My Mind about all this, is, I DID find 79 of the 86 people I wanted to find!!! What are the odds, in a population of tens of thousands??!!!

There are at least ten more on my little mailing list... yesterday, more pendants got to the stage of needing a hole drilled, corners to be rounded, polishing and satin rope added. I may even end up with a couple extra.

When they're polished, the writing stays dark, and shows up well. A paste of Playa dust and water rubbed over with the thumb (or toothpaste/water), then rinsed and buffed with a dry cloth... works well!
I guess just tying the cords wasn't sufficient... now I know! Sorry it was a hassle, and glad you glued it before losing it, and, Wow... "every day wear"?? Thanks!! :D I'm honoured!

I'm thinking of hooking up the radar/sonar as discussed on an art car, but fine tuned just to pick up the glow of eplayans on the screen. You know....to find y'all and say hello......

It had been suggested to me that I could let people know where I would camp before the Burn this year, yet I feared, for some strange and unknown reason, that associating myself with some camp, who has nothing to do with my baggage, might be a weight they did not need to carry. As it turned out, there were several eplayans who I managed to track down using info on this board, and a few of them totally saved my Burn. It was a blessing for me to know where they were camped. By next year, with the apps, playa WiFi and whatnot, there is sure to be some easy electronic way to do this.

And if that doesn't work, just meet me at the Man Burn; I'll be the guy standing there staring at the fire.

Sure. I am not placed but we are always in the same general area (5:15 and G-H-I-J or thereabouts) My van and black rock city shade are unfortunately not very distinct, but our pyramids and mail box are easy to spot. Someone usually puts camp d'nile in the puters at center camp.

I only saw Elliot this year. He was restocking the JOTS one evening. :) I would love to see more of you!! Especially since I haven't made it to the M&G the last two years.

Ratty wrote:So today I decided to devise a way to find you guys next year. You can run...etc...My idea is this. A map. Yes a map of your location. I can't believe how few of you I actually saw in the TWO weeks that I was there. I will be marking a playa map with everyones camp. Robbi dobbs told me where Patsh was, I told Figjam where MDF was, Everybody told everyone else where somebody was. A lot of people were placed ahead of time and they would have been easy to find if I had put them on a map.

Do you find yourself wishing you had someone to chum around with at night? Maybe you're looking for an early bird to enjoy the sunrise with you. On several nights I could have used some company for exploring. This is an easy solution. I'm talking about one map. Located in someones camp. You can come there and jot down locations on your own map and add your address to the main one.

Some people don't go to the M&G. Some people work too much. Some people would love to have visitors in their camp.

What do you think? Yes. No. Am I taking this comradery to seriously? I have to warn you, I'm also toying with 6 inch laminated signs to hang in front of your camp so you can catch passing eplayans.

Sounds like a great idea Ratty! (great meeting you)!

Even if you want to hide out and NOT be outed on the map it will be there, somewhere, for you to look at. The way I pictured it was laying on a table under a piece of clear plastic with a legend off to the side where you add your location. It could just as easily be a book secured to a post. It doesn't have to be a map. You could write your eplaya name, address and description of your camp, car, art or whatever. Everybody has their own map. I just want to hunt you all down one by one and hug you. I ran into some of you by accident and others were missed altogether.

Hey Elliott, Can we hang a book on your refrigerator? Everyone can find Elliotts.

MSJ, I definitely want to find YOU next year.

So why not just make it a point for all eplayans to list their eplaya name and camp name and address with playa info?

That's where you go if you want to log onto a computer and look for a specific person or camp? I want to find 100 people and I don't remember their names. Plus, it isn't up and running till Sunday or Monday and there are some great parties on Saturday before opening. I'm not a big fan of waiting in line either. (Can you tell my experience at Playa Info was less than perfect.) I did use it a couple of times with success in finding my old campmates so that worked great.

I love this idea, and a paper map. With or without wifi on the playa, I really don't want to be tied to my phone. Not to mention my camp & Facebook don't go together.

An I want a map that says "Elliot's" & "Ratty's" with the name of the camp if applicable. To crazy to try to remember a camp plus a location....sort of like a WWW or really just a WW for eplayans. Because except for BDV, I can't remember where any of you are. And then it's trying to remember who all is in BDV, and what camp.

Yeah, a map would be great!

I found....stalked.... a few eplayans but wasn't very good at tracking people down :(

I'd love to have a map and even go exploring with you Ratty!

I am in.

However, my mobile phone is 'old school' like Ratties. It is speak only - no text or other fancy features. And, I have it turned off while on the Playa.

My placement is readily available in my project thread, and I have a sign out front. I am remarkably easy to find for those who care to note the information beforehand. While I don't mind people making up their own maps, I would not want to be on a general map posted on eplaya anyone can print out. I have people to whom my camp is off limits, and who would be met with sharp words and hostility. I am positive they can find me, but I don't want to make it super-simple, nor seem as if I were sending an invitation by being included.

Exactly what he said.
No FB.
Sure, I can host a map or some such. But more people would be able to find BDC, I expect.

Let me see, how many eplayans were in Barbie Death Village this past year? Let me see if I can do this without leaving anybody out:
Doc Pyro (naturally), Felony Arson, Cap'n Joe, Squirrelhead, Tamara, Burnie, Jewelz, MyDearFriend, Graidawg, Missbrownie, Texas Joe, Lucky420, Lacivious, Hille, Tinkermom, Chris, Elorrum, Vulture Chow, Frank the Vintner, Jake, Playa Papa, Jella, Drawingablank, Brazildo, Sachi, SpyGyrl007, Wildman, Panduhmama, Amy, Sami, Bucket, Kodiak McStompinboots, Mesmer, Aksotar, Sunset Red, Red Vixen, Drew, and Thirykev. And then when you start adding in "honorary Barbiebarians" and those who are still in good standing but stayed elsewhere this past year, you start adding in names like Misa, Ygmir, Cryptofishist, Eyesguy, Big Dane, Masterkyte, Suzylove, Leigh, Catinthefunnyhat, Jax Dee, Minxy, Jack the Pyroman, Barb, Fufa, Freesponge, Pip, Bacchus, Remi, Bay Bridge Sue, Riskyburn, Marty, AnitM, Redbone, Clarity, Liam, Rellie, Fat Baby Jesus, Mel, Illy Dilly, Moonrise, Hottie, Ranger Cladwell, Janicels, Tracy, and Robbidobbs.

No wonder we have the Meet & Greet at BDV.

This is great! I can see that next year will be a friendly year.

JNeilvindy it's a date. And what the heck is that miniature deer?

AntiM, I know exactly what you mean. I suspect there are a lot of eplayans that feel the same. With good reason. In some cases it's very smart. This map or book won't be online anywhere. It will be created on playa. You won't be in it unless you write yourself in.

Doc Pyro I wish I had known. Although your realm is huge! I had no idea there were so many in BDV.I could just wander through calling, "Bring out your eplayans".

Pink, A lot of people are just a tent at an address. My listing would be whatever location and then a description of my shade structure and art. You know how easy it is to pass right by something like it's invisible.

Elliott everybody wants to come see you anyway. Even when our bikes are running fine.

Meathunter most people don't go out to the airport every year. Let's give em a reason to visit.

I don't think I've ever used it. The only reason I thought of it was because someone said start a notebook where people could come and enter their info. Since that's basically what I thought playa info did, why reinvent the wheel.

You would have to bring a list of names of all the people you want to see with you, which would be easy to make up at home before you left. Which was why I suggested people register by their eplaya names.

If people register in a book hanging on a pole at someone's camp, you'd have to stand there and copy down all the information anyway.

Just a thought, but if playa info doesn't work all that well, obviously it wouldn't make much sense to go that route.

Yes, I know it's a ridiculous idea. That's what makes it so perfect. 100 drawbacks and 10 advantages. Sounds worth a try. If an eplaya registry or map or whatever could enable us to see more of each other, then we should at least let it fail one year before it's shelved. That's the burner way. Sounds like a stupid or bad idea. Count me in.
