Wal Mart has bandanas cheaper, two for a dollar, but they aren't cotton. Today I made some more necklaces to gift. This week-end I worked on getting the dragon skin all back together. Now I have to work on making the diamonds all "jive" again. I also worked on the ceiling of the Kazba. Trial run at Gemini Party in MacCleay, Oregon in Mid-June. Have to have the Dragon resurrected by then. It takes a year of planning and work to really do the Burn right. You people who wait till the last minute to get ready, in my opinion, are not fully living the experience. I literally do something every day to prepare. Mama

or the one judgmental opinion for BM a day.

well, today I only thought about one thing for burning Man. I ruminated, I printed clearance price tags. I thought about faux metallic and faux pearl and granite with shiny bits of glitter. that's a lot of things. but it was really "paint"

Boo on the judgmental crap - there are as many different ways to burn (and to prepare for the burn) as there are people who attend. I've known people who've pulled it all together in a few short hours and not only lived, but had amazing experiences. I've had years where I was so buried in a specific playa project that my own personal prep was compressed into an incredibly short time, and years when I've spent the whole year making it go. In each case, it was exactly what was needed for the situation.

In more positive news, I got a few things done for camp today. Revised a couple online docs for campmates listing things that need to get done and who's signed up to 'own' certain tasks or items, then got my order in for a magnetic rake and a couple moopsticks. I also booked a certification class on the waterjet (an amazing CNC cutting tool that can go through wood, plastics, metal, stone from sheet metal thin to manhole cover thick (well, thicker… but can't imagine I'd need much thicker) for next week, I plan to use the tool to make some parts for a couple art bike projects this summer. Also got placement to fix a typo in our camp's web addy on the public list (thanks guys, that was fast). And we picked up another campmate, woohoo! Friend I've known for ages, longtime burner, really good guy - the camp he'd been with in the last few years is sitting out this year so he'll be joining us.

I just finished the first batch of my hybrid red raspberry jam, picked at 9AM and in the jar, done, at 10AM. First batch of the spring, with many more to come. Been doing this for 25 years. I am bringing a case to BM this year.

I have been learning to sew for a few weeks now, finished a basic vest and a complicated Kimono w/belt out of the Oscar DeLa Renta material I scored at an auction. Now to figure out the hat...want to make one like Mick Jagger is wearing on the album cover of "Her Satanic Majestys' Request".

Which pattern did you use for the Kimono? I'm in the process of making one myself and all the websites/tutorials/instructions I've read all stated it is a pretty straightforward/non-complicated thing to make. (I'm feeling overwhelmed and like it is totally not easy to do)

Lazerfox, I started by buying a few McCalls and Simplicty patterns on "an auction" based website, most were $5 delivered. I am a hard guy to fit, so I found a factory made kimono that fit well and used it for a pattern. (I have a dozen or so kimonos, as I tend to collect things). I think making one from a pattern would be easier than from an existing one. The vest was a pattern, it was somewhat easy, the kimono was hard work, but the quality came out much better than I anticipated. It fits well, and the long belt is a nice touch. I have enough of this fabric to make some more stuff, thinking of a pair of "clown" pants. I still need to make a hat, this material, stars and a moon, with EL wire. If you already know how to sew, I think it should be easy. I did not know how to sew when I started, now I am somewhat comfy running a machine. Plenty of pins in finners, 'tho. Ouch!

Kimonos are easy, but easiest from a costume pattern. Real kimono are made from fabric which is woven to specific kimono making widths, no cutting along the sides needed.

Larry got my art boxes accessible. I'm sorting. Good to see I have some art ready to go, leftovers from last year. I have the ones which need Godzillas set aside, ones which need to be repurposed in other ways, and a bunch of base material for collages. Since the Home is also going to E-11, I'm in dire need of all sorts of art.

I was only able to find a women's kimono pattern at my local shops/online and since this will be for my boyfriend I am concerned it won't fit properly. All of the patterns for men I've found online are just rough drawings others have made and don't seem similar to the Simplicity women's pattern at all. So I'm a little confused on how best to go about it.

Sigh. I wish he weren't so picky!!

Thanks for the compliments on the fabric, it is "3D" so it is hard to get a decent picture of it, the camera gets confused. Very thick and soft, like silk, but some form of man-made material. It was at an auction, a bolt of it, wrapped in a grey plastic. There were 9 rolls for sale, bidders' choise. I got 5 rolls for $15. I opened the roll when I got home and freaked out...it is wonderful in person. The tag said it was $50 a yard, it is 55" by 40'. Or, was. The kimono patterns I have found have it set up for several sizes, from small to a X-L. I takes a large, so the pattern is simply cut out for the "large" size. Also the "costume" pattern sets have a nice vest and a decent karate -type short kimono. Get the McCalls kimono pattern pack, it has the larger sizes in it. Savanah......mebbe I could sew you one?

The fabric looks great, and the raspberry jam sounds awesome.

Finished the inventory of all my shade hardware, taking the time to color code the fittings by structure. From there I got with my shade people and put my order in for all the tarps and shade hardware, woohoo! I also got an order placed for the red & white striped fabric we'll use for the awning above the deli counter.

Picked up my 36 volt battery charger for my vintage buggy yesterday, $45 parts and $45 labor, $90 bucks total. Speed switch and 2 spares was $50, 6 new 6 volt batteries were $777, and AMC/ Harley roller was $200. $ 1,117 total to restore my buggy. I got my disabled confirmation letter this week so I am ready to roll.

I picked up a nice straw hat at the Goodwill for $3, ( who knew that I have a 57cm head ? ), a mess kit for $2, and a sleeping bag w stuff sack for $6. I paid my monthly bills ( $446 ) by mail , got a months worth of food ( $134 ) at the FoodMaxx, and I still have $289 in my bank and $50 on my Express Debit Card. I probably should squirrel away $160 for low income ticket at will call but I have a lead on a newer golf cart w charger for $300, I hope to horse trade him down to $200 plus some barter items including ( a Schwinn with a double trailer, and/or a Schwinn with a hitchhiker, and/or a jogging stroller ). He is moving and just wants to dump all his big stuff. I fix up old bikes to give away or trade for stuff I need.

I have got 7 yard sales to hit today starting at 7 am today in a couple of hours, a Powwow in Marysville at 11 am, and the local swimming pool opens at 1 pm today. I have a couple of shade structures ( garages ) but I am still looking for a dome, I have e-mailed a Sacramento burner who is selling a partial PVC dome and parachute for $50.

Well, it is 5:30 and time to cook breakfast and fill the Thermos with coffee. A long Saturday today...whoopee!

Nice kimono! Congrats on learning how to sew :) It opens a world to many new things! It really should be taught more in schools but I see why school don't. (hurts clothing manufacturers. If we can do things on our own)

Hybrid Jam?? Sounds dangerous ;)

I have not done much. Still need to go buy some more tent stakes and some femo so I can make some new "gauges". Added some new music to my iphone so I have tunes for the train there and back. Have a few shirts I still need to sew. Need to sell a kidney so I can buy the rest of my fabric to make a few things I want. Don't know if it is going to happen.

Off to clean the house after being sick all week. Ick.

I ssupect other things have a bearing as well. Home ec/Shop seemed to go out at about the same time that feminism brought into question gendered classes. Also, there was a move towards normalizing the college/professional experience, rather than the working class life trajectory.

It will be interesting to see what happens with a continued bad economy and the craft revival movement...

Kinda like the zombie Apocalypse! I am ready damn it! Haha. Yeah now a days it is sad to see how many young people do not know how to sew, cook a REAL meal, Can, grow a vegetable, make homemade stuff like bread, cleaners or hell start a fire with out starter fluid and a lighter. :? Some days I am kinda thankful I grew up in a some what rural Iowa with a mom who knew how to do all of this.

Another thing. My sisters 20 and 18 wont shop in Goodwill. Heck one of my friend who is 27 wont as well, They refuse to by used clothing. Like it has cooties or something? But yet they will borrow friends stuff all the time? Kids... prices on shit are going through the roof!! If we did not have second hand stores, I would have not a whole lot in my closet or in my house in general.

being the unlanded gentry, i ONLY buy the finest tailored clothing at Goodwill.

I'm wearing a merino wool pendleton sweater and Yves St. Laurent slacks.

i have many Hickey Freeman and Gieves & Hawkes (saville row) suits and i prefer shoes from switzerland or italy.

My Clothing often would sell at retail for far more than my net worth, but, as the old saying goes...

Some of the people who work at GW are not brite. You can get designer names for $2. Nothing wrong with a sharp dressed man. They are sexy!! I would much rather see a guy in a nice suit then a pair of fubu jeans and a ed hardy shit any day.

Here is my house. Like I said 95% of my stuff is found,GW, or gave to me. I love it this way to. Looks "cute". Little bit of TLC, some spray paint , and sewing it is as good as new! ( And yep that is the BRC BDC sticker on my lap top ;)) Don't have the kitchen or office in here cause well, there as mess at the moment with dishes and BM prep.

Ah, in San Francisco that would be over ten bucks at one of the special goodwills. The hipsters have discovered thrift, at least around here.

I bet there's all sorts of geographic differences.

I get the sense it varies even within a city. My mother once suggested I go to the thrift shops in higher-income, residential parts of town - the prices might be slightly higher but the ratio of donations:shoppers seems higher (so things are less picked over) and the donations seem to be of higher quality if the donors can just afford to buy a new one the minute this one gets a tiny hole or stain or goes out of style.

Well, I could go all snooty and say that's geography too, just on a Lichtenstein scale, rather than a Russian one, but yeah, the subtleties are legion.

Being precise does not make one snooty!

At least I sure hope not because that would imply my snooty-correction-per-hour rate is dangerously high.

I found a few canvas paintings for $2 each. The canvas is worth that alone.
