My mouth is watering right now. I love pretty much anything that's pickled.

What about pickles pigs feet? Ugh. I don't understand what people do with those. I don't think I have ever run across a recipe that calls for them. Then again, even when I ate meat, I was forcing myself (I don't particularly like the taste of it).

My guess is that the pigs' feet are eaten by people who grew up poor and were glad of any meat. Or else children or grandchildren of same who got used to eating it at home. Same as people who eat grasshoppers. For a real look into weird meats, Riding the Iron Rooster is a good place to start.

This made me think of the MOST important thing I learned. If you find you've neglected to bring something ESSENTIAL, like lotion for your hands or, like me, fuel for the camp stove... ask around! Put up a sign asking if someone has some extra. Burners the most generous people I've met. I found out on the 2nd to last day that the camp net to me had several bottles of camp stove fuel I could have had... if I'd only asked :-)

Had that a couple of years ago. We left before the burn, spent the night in Reno showering, gambling & eating.

The next morning we took our fresh clean selves and climbed into the dusty-ass RV we had to drive home in.......

*sigh*

I think that's the first time playa-dust ever felt like "dirt" to me.

How is eating a pig's foot any weirder than eating some meat from it's ribs or stomach?

I don't believe there's any such thing as "weird meat." If you're going to eat an animal, eat all of it that you can.

Pig's feet are better grilled.

I used to have issues with body parts that reminded me that I'm eating an animal. A steak/hamburger/bacon isn't as disturbing as a big pig head on a platter. :)

My grandpa taught me the correct technique for cracking the scull on a spit roasted pig to get to the yummy brain.

This is done, of course, after the pigs head is stripped and consumed of all meat, yummy crackling sticky skin and connective tissue, crunchy ears and meaty tongue.

I gots to go to the carniceria and get me a suckling pigglet.

Oooo, I love it when you talk dirty to me.

There were a couple of copperheads at DAMM Camp in Valhalla at Transformus this weekend.

As I'm brushing my teeth one night, trying to go to bed, I hear "Dirty Southern Burners! Got some copperhead meat for ya!" Cowboy Coffee Camp (non-stop Johnny Cash and coffee) had skinned and cut it up for us.

Wrapped in bacon and tossed on the grilll, that is how we ROLL down heah.

Ugly Dougly, I have been wondering what that stuff was for years--a constant, low-grade wonderment, tempered by a general distractibility--but all the same! Now I know what I've been gleefully nomming at sushi restaurants. I am triumphant. Accidentally.

That's my favorite kind of triumph.

I learned a few things,
1. Make sure you can spend a week with your camp mates. More importantly, make sure you can spend being in a car for long periods of time with them. We went with a friend of mine from high school(who had been before) turns out over the last five years, we annoy the hell out of each other now!
2. Make sure your day goggles also work as night goggles.
3. Wet moist foods are the best. My pot roast and potatoes that I had precooked and froze didn't warm up so well.
4. Bacon is delicious, but the hot grease can be a pain in the ass if you don't have someplace to put it. And a used beer can full of bacon grease doesn't smell so good after a couple days.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

Good advice.

I'm a collector, so I bring (among other things) 1 pair dark green/mirrored welders, and 1 pair of clear-lensed goggles. The clear ones make me look cross-eyed. While it's certainly "A Look", it makes me glad that most dust storms seem to be during daylight hours. :)

I'm thinking of adding a pair with the dark green flip-up lense revealing the clear lense below . . .

Great Thread

Post by digirati.agent » Tue Jul 20, 2010 4:54 pm

I lurk around on here much more than I post. This is going to be my first burn... so I am excited and also a bit nervous about bringing the right amount and type of gear. Thanks for all the tips everyone. I am actually crunching a pickle as I type this. My only question on gear is my footwear. I am looking at my New Rocks and wondering if the playa will permanently damage them. I love them dearly and find them terribly comfortable... but am concerned about the leather cracking.

Leather does fine; if you like, treat with a leather protectant before going to keep them supple, then clean with vinegar/water/toothbrush and re-treat when you get home.

I'll be wearing my new rocks at some point.

In the past I've worn my docs with no problems whatsoever.

Use some good leather conditioner before you go, and clean them well when you get back, and I doubt you'll have any problems.

While I have no doubt there are some isolated cases of leather cracking, I have to suspect something else leading to the actual cracking (it was dry already, it already wasn't well cared for, etc). There's no good reason why perfectly good, known-tough and durable leather boots should be splitting left and right from a mere week in very dry conditions.

Gifting?

Post by digirati.agent » Tue Jul 20, 2010 7:38 pm

I saw something here about me not worrying about gifting my first year. I have to confess I have been working on what I think will be a cool gift to hand out to people I meet... and hoping to bring about 150 of them. I am making them with the help of a group of art students here in Georgia. They will be a brown construction paper wrapped parcel containing candy, a single packet of caffeinated instant orange drink mix and some single ply toilet paper (figured they would all be useful). The parcel is printed with an image from the original Metropolis poster. It will be wrapped in a thin leather strap that has a bottle cap necklace jewelry piece. The bottle cap will have one of four random images of street art that is shrunk inside it and resin filled. I figured these would be a combo of something for the playa and something to take home.
I wanted to give something fun to the people I meet and most of this stuff is material I don't have to pay for or costs little.

Ruling of "swell" vs "moop"?
