Picked up CFM from Reno airport.
She lures you in with the shy librarian look, then before you know it your drinking a second fifth of some dawgawful coconut rum from a Mr. Pibb can in the gate line and pissing on the fence posts and asking random pairs of women if they are closet lesbians on an adventure.
Don't trust this creature. Very dangerous.

We can do the airport pickup, but this year it has to be done right. Plan ahead and I pick you up on the way in.
No coconut rum ever again!
Ooorah!
Outstanding thread. Can't wait to hit this - sounds like a lot of very nonjudgmental folks and good-timers. I loved hearing how shy some of you mega-posters on eplaya actually are.
Hugs all! Can't wait to see ya's at the MnG!

3 things I was hesitant to do, but did anyway:
1. Allowed strangers to hug me. (I'm still not entirely comfortable with this unless there is a real connection or reason for it)
2. Climbed things (I was nervous at first, but as soon as I found my inner kid, it was great)
3. Watching things burn. (fear of raucous crowds, stampedes, uncontrolled fire, and getting lost)
As an extremely shy person with a fear of crowds and a need for a "safe place", it may seem trivial but those were big deals for me. I still have a "to do" list. I can't wait to tackle some of those this year.

Living in NYC and being a bike messenger for a year as well as my photographer and journalism background made me less than shy, unless I'm actually not "working" and being social.tamarakay wrote:this is a very reassuring thread. kenman has a touch of social anxiety and i've been a bit overwhelmed at how creative and smart you all are.
please everyone come to the meet & greet, i so want to actually meet you.
I can talk to strangers and enjoy it.
OK, three things:
1. Move to NYC with no job
2. Ditch the car in favor of riding a bike
3. Talking to the blonde, Swiss girl in Union Square.

What's wrong with the Gore Tex-lined Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero I'm wearing? It happened to be raining and the hat worked well.Solito wrote:To Super Evil Brian -- You'd think those experiences would foster better taste in hats.1. Move to NYC with no job

I normally have a Tilley hat on my head (or Cinelli bike cap or KMFDM ball cap)
Or this Outdoor Research hat, which is lighter than the Tilley and more breathable. I can't remember the model name but, it's not as stiff, but works well and cost less than half.
Although the Tilley has a lifetime warranty (I'm on my second hat) and is a friendly Canadian company. Outdoor Research may be more of a "corporation," but I'm not sure. Their products -- along with Keen, kelty, Mountain Hardware, some Northface -- seem to be well thought out and comparitively priced well. It's not "cheap."
I can go on and on about gear, camera stuff and sustainable transportation.

Yep. Talking to strangers is my top fear as well. The last few years I have run a small bar in my camp as well as passed out Klondike Bars to parched-looking strangers passing by. Turned out to be an easy way to mingle with people. But I still have a very difficult time outside of the comfort of my camp. I am going to start by going the the MnG this year! (Sorry Doc Pyro. I promised last year to bring my 3 charming birgens by BBDC&WB so they could explore the mysteries in the back of your RV! Now that they may know what to expect it may be harder (or easier??) to tempt them.)
I spend the year browsing second hand stores and bring many bold clothing options with me. Maybe this year I will actually wear them. Maybe even a tutu....no, just do not have the legs for it!
Dancing. OMG. I just have no rhythm!! This year I promise Pebbles that I will not abandon her after only 10 minutes (ok, 5 minutes) at Opulent Temple. Is it ok to try the few dance moves I learned back in the late 60's?!!

1. Went to Burning Man on my own (an inexperienced solo camper at the time and scared of the long wilderness drive).
2. Met and bonded with strangers and made new friends.
3. Went with this strange dust covered guy on an all night bike ride date. Now four years later I live with him and we plan on getting married this year.
