One of the best expressions…

"To those who've never been, no words can explain it. To those who have, no words are necessary"

When I was prepping for my first burn, one of my campmates used to throw it at me from time to time as he patiently tried to answer the many questions I had. Then afterwards it was in that Beyond Black Rock documentary that came out post-burn. It seemed very prophetic. With the rise of sites like flickr and youtube I haven't heard others use it as much as they used to, but it still rings true.

The dust is corrosive, but it's not acid. It's the opposite, actually. Alkali is a strong base (remember doing litmus test stuff in chemistry class?), on the opposite side of the pH scale. That's why people recommend washing stuff with vinegar, it's a cheap, readily available solution on the acidic end of the scale that counters and neutralizes the dust. I love the smell of the dust too - I used to bring a small bag home with me at the end of every burn. I stopped after moving to SF, my gf really didn't like the idea of having tightly wrapped "playa bombs" unleashing a dusty apocalypse. Besides, our lives (and brains) are pretty playafied - there's plenty of exposure to the stuff (and the smell) in our van and our storage space.

Savannah - look into steampunk. The running gag is steampunk is goths who've discovered brown, but closer to the truth is it's industrial/goth burners and designers who wanted something that would coordinate better with the playa :D

Nearly went bust yesterday on a big plywood buy, grabbed 20 more sheets to cover all the parts that still need to be cut. The guy I've been working with at the lumber yard has been fantastic, keeping a stash aside for me (it was a special buy material) for the last month and a half, but I needed to make sure we got all our needs covered on the project as soon as possible. If that had run out the alternative choice didn't look as good, wasn't as strong, and cost nearly twice the price.

And then in the oddball purchase department, I finally figured out the right combination of keywords to use to order a new handle for the sliding door on our cargo van. The playa has a tendency to make plastics more brittle and susceptible to breaking over time, and that goes for door handles too. Shortly after getting back last year (the van's 7th or 8th trip to the playa, I think) the handle snapped off like a dry twig, and it's been in the 'meaning to get fixed before we go back to the playa' pile since.

I like the easy shares, 300, 310. 4mp. cheap, beatable, rubber banded, electrical tape, still soldier on. We use a photo upload program at work that was designed for the C300 7 years ago. It seems sluggish with better updated cameras, at any resolution, so I like to find the old cameras. I get them for about ten bucks on ebay, and they last longer than I expect, but when knucklheads lose them, or finally break them, I have one on standby. It takes forever for work to approve the purchase of the new camera available in the system, and they have proven to be very fragile, so I just buy my own. I have the same C310 that's been to 6 burns. I put it in a sandwich bag, and don't worry about it. I used to invest in 35mm equipment, but don't have the desire for photography investments any more. Happy snappy is my modus operandi these days.

And, HOORAY FOR ME I just got my 3rd EMS shift confirmed 8) 8) 8) so, YES I will be at Med Station 3 on Sunday night when gates open, ready to welcome all the exhausted Burners who injure themselves setting up in the dark. Don't be that guy; though, just come by to say hi, get a hug, make my night go by faster... 8) Seriously, honk your horn if you drive by on your way to your camp; I'll probably be out front yelling "Welcome Home!" to every overloaded vehicle. 8) When I am not busy patching up that guy. :|

Savannah wrote: I think I'm just weird. If I (personally) wear black, I feel like I'm fighting the dust. If I wear dust-colored, I feel like I am the dust.
Ha ha .....well my affinity for black actually has practical roots. I'm VERY colorblind and after so many "you didn't where THAT tie with THAT shirt to work, DID YOU?" when what I wore actually mattered (but really does it ever?) and so many times waking up to have my clothed laid out for me like a kid (and just why hasn't someone exploited the color-challenged with adult sized Garanimals?) I decided to go monochromatic. It's not as boring as it sounds, there are many different variants on gray or grey (see?)

When I found my way into the kitchen as a profession I discovered that black hides grease stains better than anything (and no I don't fancy the pinstripe come clown pant Chef's pants) I just invested in a half dozen pairs of black denims. Of course, on the days I work the pizza station and my black boots are no longer black it does seem a tad less sensible (picture Pigpen with flour).

Anyway here are several rationalizations:

People don't point and laugh any longer (not at the attire, anyway)
It makes for a quick getaway out of the house in the morning, (to say nothing of my indecisiveness issues)
It makes my girlish figure a little less, how do you say, middle-aged paunchy?
I can hide in dark shadows (as long as I can suppress the heavy breathing and cracking joints)

Take your pick.

Actually each day I grow closer and closer to being my avatar doppelgänger.

Finally had a nice day and got around to setting up the monkeyhut for the first time.
After my sister and I used the edge of the tarp as a straight edge
to line up the rebar it went alot better.
It needs some tweaking like alot more grommets
and we decided we need a floor tarp with grommets
in the spots to put the rebar through. I think someone else mentioned
doing this too. But all in all it went pretty smoothly.

Looking good. I also thought about using a floor tarp but I'm wondering if the fine dust on top of a smooth surface such as a tarp might make it very slippery.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

Thanks, Geospyder! :D
I used a couple tarps on the floor of my dome in '05 and it wasn't slippery.....but then again it was covered and wasn't open to the playa blowing onto it.
This may be a question for the monkeyhut pros! :D

MyDearFriend uses a canvas drop cloth with gromits (she can let you know what type) I like that alot better than tarp, you don't feel the need to sweep it more than once a day like you do a tarp.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Works great for setting up too if you put the gromits the distance apart your monkey hut rebar goes.

Thats what we were thinking, too! Was a pain just trying to measure the corners out!
I looked up a few canvas drop cloths and they seem to run around $35 for a 12' x 15'.
That'd work out good for the rib width(12') and the extra length almost 4 feet(my tarp is 11'4" so we spaced the ribs that far) would make a nice threshold outside the hut.

I'm thinking a coiled vacuum cleaner hose with a small speaker at one end. 5 watts for 8 ohm, 10 watts for 4ohms, I'd guess, that's not bad for noise. It'll be an experiment. it would be nice on my trike. I've fallen for one of these "sound" kits before, a train simulation: it was just a static burst that you could slow down or speed up. I'll have to find out what the "horn" sounds like. It's cheap enough to wait for the surprise and not worry.
I really what I want is tuned air horns... but well. nathan K5LA google it. there's some fun diy stuff using pvc pipes, but that's an obsession for another day.

I use my canvas dropcloth as floor & "porch" area 8) and I mark it with sharpie where the rebar should go. Very easy & simple and quite comfortable for bare feet. 8) 8) 8)

Every day I practice drinking more water.. Right now I'm at 1/2 gal. per day..
Water, coffee and juice.

It's hard to drink that much it you normaley just drink coffee and juice..

It's in the lower 80's here.. Working in garden and lawn it's a lot hotter..

The plus is I don't eat as much.. So am losing a little weight..

Mixing a little lemon and vinegar makes for a better drink.. Plus a packet of electrolyte.

Start coordinating your costumes now!
Even more so if the person you need to coordinate with is on the other side of the country.

Your item was delivered at 2:33 pm on June 10, 2013 in MONTCLAIR, NJ 07042. The item was signed for by E S.

I have my very important "One Item" waiting for me at home.

I'm going to pick up a bottle of wine and some sushi and take a night off from crochet as I read the Survival Guide.
