How can I get to Black Rock Point?

Post by HughMungus » Thu Aug 18, 2005 1:13 pm

Originally I wanted to leave the boundaries of BRC and go up to Black Rock Point via bicycle. But I was told that we're "not allowed" to leave the confines of BRC during the event. Would I be stopped if I were to try to bike it out there? Is there some way around this? Can I leave the event thru the front gate and bike up the highway to near where Black Rock Point is? Can I leave the event via the front gate and drive a car up the highway to get there? In other words, is the restriction on traveling across the playa or is it on leaving the event and/or being anywhere on the playa except BRC?

I don't know specifically about going to Black Rock Point, but you can definitely leave the event by the Gate, but you will have to pay $20. Just make sure you have your ticket stub with you, you'll need both that *and* the bracelet they give you to get in again.

See page 9, "You may only come into and out of the event site through the Gate," in your BM Survival Guide. If you don't have your paper copy, it's at
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... ement.html

People I have heard from who walked outside the trash fence got hassled by the none-too-friendly power maniacs with badges and guns.

See page 12 of the BM Survival Guide, "In-and-Out Policy/Shuttle Bus," for information on, uh, going out and in.

Yeah, I read that right after I posted. So I guess it's OK to leave the event and go somewhere else on the Playa as long as you do it thru the front gate. In that case, I would just borrow a friend's car to make the trip up there via the highway.

And, when outside the event, don't get 'near' the perimeter fence. They partrol it looking for people sneaking in, etc. I'm not exactly what 'near' is.

I plan on coming back 'off season' to check out various other natural features on the playa. I don't want to leave during the week!

Also, if you're heading to the Black Rock you do NOT want to do it by heading est on the playa. 4 miles out from the mountain the playa remain muddy just under the cruft. You WILL get stuck. Soldier Meadow road is the only safe place to access it. ALSO be aware that the permit stipulations emphatically state that ALL hot springs areas are off limits. There will be Earth Guardians there at all times during the event. PLEASE consider that your showing up at either the Double Hot or Black Rock pools can have a potentially negative impact on the permitting process for 2006. Please chck the Earth Guardian section of the BM web site for more specific info.

Yeah, I'd stay away from the perimeter fence (the original idea was to bike north-ish and hop the fence but not now). And I'd stay away from the springs, too (as much as I'd like to visit them). I just want to see the actual Black Rock if it's possible to park on the highway (perhaps at the 12-mile turnoff) and bike the rest of the way across the playa or whatever. I have an email in to someone who I know has been there to see if this is a viable idea.
