Smoke detectors and No Smoking Or Open Flame in BRC

Making Black Rock Safer one rule at a time
This weekend is the perfect time to protect your BRC camp and loved ones with one easy step toward fire protection.
On April 1, the Black Rock City Fire Dept / Nevada Department of Forestry is advising all residents of Black Rock City of a new requirement for smoke detectors in all camp living structures and cooking areas.
This is expected to make Black Rock City safer, according to BRCFD Chief Russ Kane
.
“When properly installed and maintained, the camp smoke detector is one of the best and least expensive ways to provide early warning when a fire begins,” Kane said.
Smoke detectors save lives, prevent injuries and minimize property damage. The risk of dying from fire is twice as high in camps that do not have a functioning detector.
In the incident of a fire, smoke detectors will alert the occupants of the camp before the concentration of smoke reaches intoxicating levels or before the fire becomes too intense.
Fire officials advise the smoke detectors are sensitive to smoke so to reduce false alarms all smoking/open flame in Black Rock City is being banned no smoking of anything that your life doesn't depend on and all open fires will be banned
New detectors are more reliable than old ones; just make sure to test the alarm when your done putting the batteries back in after smoking.
You can also ensure the proper performance of your smoke detector by placing at the entrance to your living quarters and in the kitchen area
Finally, if your smoke detector is more than 10 years old the Black Rock City Fire Department recommends you replace it.
Our agreements with the federal government are in the form of event stipulations. For public safety reasons This new rule and regulation was a result of an agreement with the Bureau of Land Management which granted Burning Man LLC a 2-year permit to hold the Burning Man event on the Black Rock Desert. This is an unprecedented move by the BLM who, for the past 14 years, have only issued single-year permits to the Burning Man Project.
Burning Man is an exercise in radical rules and regulations. Don't ruin your experience, and that of others, by making yourself a burden on our community due to lack of planning. A little forethought goes a long way. Make like a Girl Scout, and be prepared!
