Watch out when buying Duct tape....
... I bought a roll of unbranded Duct tape this year which promptly fell off almost everything I tried to stick it to. Completely useless and annoying! I have heard 3M brand is one of the better ones. Anyone got the lowdown on this one?

A shade structure busted my jumpseat window of my truck (A karmic bitch slap that I had coming) I cut some plywood and drywall screwed it with some 2x4 pieces to block most of the opening. To make it waterproof, I used a no-name brand of duct tape that did the same thing you described except stuck to the truck just long enough to deposit its glue to the paint, then fell away.
It was magical to see how useless this stuff was. I ended up laying stips of tape together and weaved it into a fabric that I then stapled to the wood.
Playa engineering at its best.

duct tape, by design, has soft gooey adhesive and semielsatic fabric. the adhesive flows when it becomes warm which is ideal for sealing ducts. it's not so good for when you actually want it to stick to stuff in the desert.
gaffer's tape looks very similiar, but has a stronger (and less residue leaving) adhesive, and a firmer fabric.
there probably are some uses for duct tape, though. bundling up thieves and storing them out of harms way until the end of the event comes to mind.

Gaffers tape is ideal for the reasons you mentioned, but at $11 per roll its a bit on the expensive side.
I'm sure there are places where you can get it cheaper, but my only luck finding true gaffers tape is at a grip supply company like Mole Richardson.

Word on the street is that it's now sold at Home Depot as "contractor's tape". No word on price, but as I'm there almost every day, I'll soon know.TheJudge wrote:Gaffers tape is ideal for the reasons you mentioned, but at $11 per roll its a bit on the expensive side.

Gorilla tape is expensive last time I bought some (I'm still saving the last bit for something expensive that needs repair)TomServo wrote:Gorilla tape
Does anyone know where the best prices are to be had for this stuff are?
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!

Yeah, its expensive. But if you use it, sparingly, and to be used again....Its worth the cost. Maybe we should start a GorillaGuild...buy it in bulk, for elite burners.moonrise wrote:Gorilla tape is expensive last time I bought some (I'm still saving the last bit for something expensive that needs repair)TomServo wrote:Gorilla tape

Gaffers tape is not duct tape!!!!! Gaffers tape is designed to hold something down but pull up cleanly, used mostly in movies, tv, theater & photography (it has other uses as well). It will not hold something like duct tape will. Similar glues, but they do not function alike.gyre wrote:The real duct tape is now sold as the high priced product, often called gaffer's tape.
The glue on regular duct tape will not hold up to heat either, do be careful how you use it.

Just a simple search came up with this being the price to beat.
Still not cheap, but you get what you pay for I guess.

An other source for good tape is "racer tape". I don't know what the brand(s) name would be, or price, but I'm talking about the stuff that you see the pit crews put on race cars on TV. You buy it at stores that sell serious auto racing equipment. I imagine you can order it on the internet, but you would want to investigate to make sure you get the real stuff.
I use Gorilla Tape from the nearest hardware store.

~Niers, thanks for the link (now added to my mind numbing, long list of BM bookmarked pages)oneeyeddick wrote:From now on, this is the only tape that matters.

I have red tape of decent quality, but not sure where I found it. Maybe Ace Hardware.
From what I remember reading about "duct tape", it was never supposed to be used on heating ducts -- and is now not allowed for that purpose. The original name (still IIRC) was "duck tape", as in cotton duck cloth. "Cloth tape", "canvas tape".

Anyone know anything about "Python Tape"? At least that's what I think it was called; some sort of constrictor at any rate.
And Dick, I'd just like it on the record that I've had a roll of that for a couple of weeks now.
Of course, now that the secret's out, anyone can claim that.
