home depot your "supplier" of choice? do you get your material Fix behind construction sites? jumping into dumpsters because you Need it?

where do you get all the pieces to be so creative, destructive, loud, stable, etc, etc and so on..

HA! Skyhawk, before I committed to this little exercise in semi-controlled madness, I never even THOUGHT about construction dumpsters.

Now, I see them EVERYWHERE, and I'm always catching myself doing the little "sneaky-peek" to see if there's anything interesting in them.

I consider it a sin to pass a dumpster without checking its contents. I've built several little greenhouse domes from castoff conduit, and fueled many joyous bonfires with palattes and spools. Even though I still patronize the Big Boxes, it feels triumphant to build a Good Weird Thang from all jetsam and curb treats.....

We Rustbelters have Menard's, which is about as cheap as it gets...All of the local electrical contractors' prices are inflated unless you intend to buy enough to construct, say, a Frequency 50 dome of approximately 1000' diameter.....

Idea for theme camp- All structures recycled from construction sites- "SkipTown"? "Republic of Dumpsteria"? "Trashville"?

Do you have TSC (Tractor Supply Stores) out there? They're our Farm and Fleet (extinct now) replacement, where you can buy your bull nose rings, gummy bears and tarps at the same time....aside from them we've got the Unholy Trinity- Lowes, B-Square and Home Depot...

I have to wander the isles at TSC every couple of weeks just to see what strange and wonderful things appear- Yesterday I discovered fiberglass poles designed to be used to hold up electric fence, about pencil-thick and maybe four feet long, a buck apiece. I could bend one nearly double without problems, and plan to make a (non-load-bearing!) dome soon. Very nice things! Light! Combined with a lightweight sewn cover or 'chute you could make your own knockoff of those extra-cool Mountain Hardware expedition domes! (Aw heck- just buy one of those....THREE GRAND, groundcloth NOT included.....pretty, tho......)
They had solar-powered fence chargers too- connect to the frame of your EMT dome and say goodbye to camp pillagers during the burn!

Score.. I found a rollback box (oddly taller and shorter in length) from a metal salvage something or other.. conduit.. lovely conduit.. much of it still in 10 ft sticks.. but.. its all 1/2 inch.. so.. now I have materials for some form of Hallow's Eve wickedness.. perhaps an 8ft tall giant spider perched over my truck looking hungrily down at trick or treaters.. by the by.. anyone know the legal situation of "borrowing" materials, or downright taking them from places like this? is is tresspass when the thing in question is on public property and not Specificly marked no trespassing? is it theft when the materials in question are trash?

That was some nice wood BTW. Several of us along with some help from Johhny and the Playa Cruisers spent the better part of an evening hefting about 10 of those logs into a burn barrel. Those that were left were too heavy for us to toss.

Shame on the particular camp with the large parachute and hammocks for leaving that stuff o r for not being creative enough to find an after burn use for them.

I constructed PALIO out of stuff bought from Costco (the trailer), the local potter's supply house, and Home Depot. This year I'm not going to do any real large-scale art but I'm making little enhancements and geegaws for my personal campicile. These will most likely be comprised of materials gleaned from all over — dumpster diving, HD, Michael's, Ben Franklin Crafts, Fred Meyer's, the forest, Costco, Bi-Mart, Jerry's Home Improvement. I tend to just walk around and be "the seeing eye," looking to see what's what, what's where, how it can be implemented.

I hit thrift stores and always take a run by the clearance tables whenever I'm out on an errand. A dollar spent here, fifty cents there, next thing I have a virtual treasure trove of just <i>schtuph</i> collected over the years. I never throw out dishes when they break, they go in the "ceramic shards" box and get made into tile mosaics along with shells, glass shards, marbles, sparklegems, et alia.

I haven't been signed onto Freecycle for long but I'm pretty sure it'll be a major factor in the Schtuph Collection this year. The Eugene Freecycle numbered 10 when I joined: it's up to 402 when I checked a few hours ago. They ran an article in the paper a week ago and the next day it was 275 — it's almost doubled in one week!
