Can anyone explain Burning Man in Mandirin?

Post by hib » Tue Jul 24, 2007 8:48 am

I am a veteran burner who has met a wonderful sweet lady from DaLian China who wants to go with me. She speaks only a little English, and needs more understanding about the wonderfulness and wackiness that is BM.

Does anybody either speak Mandarin, or know where there are some resources in her native tounge?

My husband is fluent in mandarin (born and raised in Taiwan). He'd love to help out. Why don't you pm me with details you want to share with her (this is my first year, and hubby is not going - not his gig!), and we can set up a phone call. I see you're from Palo Alto - we were JUST there visiting my hubby's daughter at Stanford. Look forward to hearing from you!

Two replies and help arrives. Things like this are one of the reasons I love being a part of all this wackiness.

The Mandarin help was better last year.
Irony. You're soaking in it.

Hell, if you understand it, explain it to us.
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Thank you.

What is burning man in english? Well, it isn't that it cannot be described in english, but the explanation, in english, just sounds plain rude.

Dui, dui!

It's weird -- and fun -- how easy it is to read without the tones, except for all those words I don't know.

Now Expain Burning Man to me, too!!

I believe that Burning Man is experiential, therefore its akin to telling a virgin (in the literal sense) what sex is like! Or telling someone what something Looks/sounds/tastes like. Since everyones experience is different, then everyones experience when defined to the Nth degree will be different as well. Best to leave expectations at the gate!

Genuinely,

We can tell people what it is and isn't to us.
It isn't helpful to the people that should go and the people who shouldn't,
to just tell them you have to be there.

When I finally found someone to give me straight answers, they told me about the camps and events they liked and the range of them.
They told me that two people could enter at the same time, go different ways and have completely different experiences.

If you want an interesting experience, go around with a group very different from yourself for a while.
You'll find a very different burn right in front of you, with a different focus.

I still think reading The Man Burns Tonight is the best way to find out if you will enjoy the event before you go.

What I really wanted to know, was what the people were like that went.
Talking to a long time burner answered those questions.
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.
