Are you looking for artowrk for one or do you already have an idea and just want to have them done?
Most places that do awards also do what's called "promotional products"--this means if you can put a design on it, they'll sell it. Including patches. I suggest looking in your phone book for awards, call those places and ask them if they do custom patches.
Patches are generally priced by size, amount of colors and thread/stictch count for each color.

The Patch Place - Chino, CA http://www.thepatchplace.com/
Send 'em your art, they'll tell you how much.. 'Tis easy.. I've used this place, and they do good work. Turnaround is a few weeks depending on whether it's done locally (more $$$) or China (cheaper and slower).

There is a company called Zone West based in Maple Ridge, BC that specializes in custome embroidered crests.
I have had my patches made there for the last 2 years. You don't have to be an artist (thought I'm sure most burners are in one way or another) you just have to give them your ideas. There is no art charge.
The prices are reasonable because it's in Canadian funds and shipping to the US is no problem. The minimum order is 50.
email zonewest@zonewest.net for a quote. You just have to know what size crest you want and roughly how many.

Happiness is like a butterfly,
the more you chase it, the more it will elude you,
but if your turn your mind to other things,
it softly comes and sits on your shoulder.

I went to that patches website and checked out the on line pricing for the pick-a-patch. Those prices are way more expencive than at Zone West and you can compleatly design your own patch.
50, 3" crests, 7 thread colours would be roughly $3.19 each plus shipping ($12.00) in Canadian funds.

Here's a nice link showing a lot of Rippies patches. I don't think he pays anywhere near the $3/patch price that someone quoted here. Have a look, they're pretty cool.

Those patches are pretty sweet. Do you know what they were used for or were they just for fun.
$3.19 is based on a minimum order of 50. I'm sure there were more than 50 of those patches. The more patches you order, the lower the price.

Ripcord's a combo Ranger, ESD (medical) and DPW pern. He makes up several style of patches throughout the year and ends up gifting them to pretty much everyone in a particular department which he's designed for. The scans really don't do these justice as the colors are much more vibrant when viewing the real thing.
He has them done somewhere in New York I believe. The company does a lot of military squadron, police and fire dept patches.
If you click on the thumbnails they give a much more detailed version. My fave is the very green patch for Perimeter. The various shades above the Man's head represent the sweep of a radar screen which we refer to as the Lighthouse. Lighthouse is a tracking unit that we utilize to see hippies 3-4 miles from the perimeter fence who're trying to sneak in.
Some refer to it as the Eye of Sauron.
