Hello guys. My name is Julio, Gnome, Parches, whatever. I'll be 19 by the time Burning Man comes, and this is my first year.
So, naturally, I'll have questions.
I'm not sure how unique my case is, but I'm from Mexico City. I'd be traveling to the man by plane most likely. So I was wondering, first of all what's the nearest airport to Black Rock City, and whether there's any kind of shuttle or similar transportation arrangements like I've seen in other festivals. I know the point of Burning Man is kind of, you know, doing stuff yourself, but it's still worth asking.
Also, I know money's not valid inside the festival except for certain things, but I was wondering how much an average participant spends on preparation, including food, tent, etc.
Thanks in advance guys, sorry for the extremely boring post that you've probably seen three hundred times in the past week, I promise it only gets better :D
Greetings... and questions...

1 Closest airport is Reno.
2. No shuttles available so start working on lining up a ride now. There is a ride share board. Get active on the board and start making friends. Something will work out.
3. You'll need some cash inside for ice.
4. The cost for setting yourself up for the event? Well, that's a pretty broad question.
Just about all of these are answered all over the site.
Start reading. Everything. Read through the posts. Read the survival guide. Read all the info on the main page. Then go back and read it some more and start hunting down info off site and reading that.

Julio -
Outlay for your BM adventure can be as outrageous or cheap as you want it.
Since your not driving - you will need to arrange a ride or rent a rig to get from Reno (nearest airport to Gerlach, NV) to the Black Rock City.
You'll need supplies that you'll need some you cant fly with like:
water
bedding
clothing
sun protection
tent
ticket to BM
I have seen guys rent limos from the airport as a limos rates are negotiable. Taxis rates are set by the municipality and are exorbitant for long trips.
The ride share is not up yet for 2008 but will be a good resource for you to hook up with.
It costs me a couple of grand to go, I have seen others spend 10K easily on their adventure.
I have also seen some resourceful people do the entire trip for 4-500 and even less.
have a blast and you wont regret it.

and take a look at the list of links at the bottom of the page. There are many lists of what people bring, so work out for yourself what you can fly in with and what you'll need to buy in Reno and get out to the playa with your ride- share friends. You can then look at your list and figure out the costs - be sure to add the cost of the ticket, which is significant.
Although money is not very useful during the event (Louise and I don't even buy ice while we're there), you may find cash is necessary if you have a medical event of some kind. I can't recall whether you can use a credit card for medical care and prescriptions in Gerlach, but someone here may know. I think cash is also required for bail if you are arrested for some reason. You may need money outside the event.
