Thank you so much for posting this. What a brilliant and stratified thing he's doing. The reaction to it and tension he plays off of with authority are just so perfect. I mean, they won't clean it off when it's just dirt.

I want to be clear here, though. This is someone using a public space to make a statement about the uses of public space, and to shame the owners of that space into action at the same time he is commenting on what they consider acceptable for that space (dirt) vs. unacceptable (art made from their dirt).

This is different from (a) pointless defacement simply to, as has been said, piss on a wall, and (b) unauthorized defacement of private property no matter how well done. You could paint the Mona Lisa on my house, and if you do it without my permission, I will jack you and erase it and not feel an iota of need to justify myself. If I catch you doing it to my neighbor's property and he isn't around to do anything about it, I will likely jack you and acdept the consequences.

This applies to the Playa as well. Just as it is not a democracy, neither is it pure anarchy. Rarely have I found myself absolutely alone at BRC. If art and buildings are vandalized, there were witnesses who elected to remain bystanders. A spectator is a spectator, whether it's not helping a hit & run victim on a city street, listening to Kitty Genovese yell for help for 30 minutes, or watching someone's art get trashed. And while I have anger toward vandals, I have contempt toward those who elect be witnesses and not participants in their societies and lives.

End of diatribe.

A personal conversation with a tagger

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:13 am

One evening I was sitting on the observation deck of the Spiteful Tower, a homage to the Eiffel Tower that was part of my installation "Zsu Zsu: The Crybaby Drama Queen". I was chatting with acquaintances and filling my pocket with warm accolades when one of them asked me if it was OK for people to “tagâ€

Mr. Jellyfish-- it sounds great the way you handled the situation (not overly abrasive, but still putting it real, pats on the back) I've never had my work tagged (usually do posterboard and charcoal pieces.) I've had people ask if they can sit and draw on the same piece that I was doing. Most of the folks have been jacked up on something, but it's hard for me to deny someone a simple premise, even if they throw the original intent of the piece (Someone titled a piece of mine something outlandish at the time. I smiled, and slipped it under the stack of papers to get recycled later.) I know now that I should make a postive yet stern stand on the co-artistry of a piece (unless planned). As far as tagging unknown goes, nature (of all kinds) takes it's course...
P.S.- Zsu Zsu was f u c k i n g awsome this year :D ! She spit at the girl in front of me (happily?) and I took a tongue lashing insult in front of 10-15 people because I couldn't push the buttons fast enough :) Oh Zsu Zsu, how my heart aches for you to find contentment, kisses madam, kisses...

Thanks, Clark. The whole artistic "open jam session" idea only works with skilled fine artists and I'm not one of them. Somehow it always turns into a bad version of "the blues". For what I do, I've got to plan plan plan and then find people who the plan resonates with. Thanks for the props on Zsu Zsu. She spits on your love yet somehow lingers in your heart, oui?

Just got a private message from EPIC laced full of obscenities, apparently because I happened to camp with Mischief Camp for the first time this year.

Epic was apparently one of the several hundred who got a small jolt of electricity when he tried to download "Free Porn" at the computer kiosk set up in front of our camp.

Epic, first of all. We saw pint sized women get the jolt and laugh about it. It was fairly mild. Be a man.

Secondly, I had not a damn thing to do with the kiosk's conception, design, construction or placement. I just happened to camp with this camp this year.

Thirdly, your threats and obscenities are in direct violation of the terms of use of ePlaya and I have forwarded your name to the moderators.

I know what they are.
Thanks.

Gratuitous insults never bother me though.

Thoughtful criticism might, if you're right, or even if you're wrong and I respect your opinion.
