How to participate when you don't have much prep time?

Post by Grizelda » Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:30 pm

I've been to Burning Man a couple times before, and both times I had time to make costumes, make plans, and bring odds and ends to contribute to various projects. This summer, though, grad school is eating me alive and I have a major comprehensive exam 2 days before Burning Man.

Did you ever go to Burning Man without much preparation? How did that go for you? Basic survival - food, shelter etc.. won't be a big deal, but would you feel less involved somehow if you didn't have plans to meet anyone in particular, do anything in particular, or bring anything particular?

Oh, HELL no! Grizelda honey, you just described a perfect scenario for a great week. Can you say 'I have the freedom to do whatever the #&@* I feel like'? I knew you could. You've been there before, you know darn well that you'll find something, somewhere to throw yourself into.

I'm sayin' probably by Monday, noon-ish.

I'm with Sensei. My motto is 'be here now.'

Basic survival is all you need. Show up and be there.

Are you from canada?
I hear an accent.

It still works to go on short notice.
Someone always needs help if you want to participate.

going is half the battle, 2005 My mates and I were not sure if we could make, it. We decided on wednesday to go - we had been 4 times before so it was an easy decision to go when we could. Normally we have preperation time, costumes, etc. So we decided to make the best of it and had one of the best burns ever. ZFelt very light, and I think i have never seen more of BRC before or since.

Go - dont worry.

I'm in the exact same boat as yourself.
I have to sit shit fuck tough tax exams that end on the 22nd. They do not have a high pass rate, and if I fail I'll prob be fired.

I'm trying to get things done now, and organising friends/family to do/get stuff I don't have time for.

It just means that i'll have to put off some of my gifts till next year but I should at least have myself covered.

Plus in my opinion, the easiest to get around not having a costume is to go naked! :D

Thanks. That makes me feel better, you guys.

I'll see you all in the dust this summer. Good luck on the exams, Brickmaster. And yes, I'm a Canadian. What gave it away?

The accent, of course.

Don't forget to bring a flag!
I guess I'm getting good at spotting you guys trying to sneak in.
By way of Mobile is pretty cute, I have to admit.

I have more fun getting ready sometimes than I do on the playa.
It about doing art for me..

My first year was with little preparation because I did not know I could go until that week opened up on my calendar. I read the survival guide and camped with an established theme camp so survival was never an issue. Half the time I was just in shock soaking up at all the incredible stuff I was seeing. The other time I felt a little like an outsider or a tourist.

Each year I've been back, I've worked harder, bought more shit, gave more to the community, but Im reaching a point where I just want to go and freaking relax and not worry about whether this or that will work, or whether I'll have enough booze to run the bar for seven days, or, etc.

So, 2009, if I go, I may just be an old fart.
