Before the hysteria spreads, do we know how many people have gotten this fungus on the playa? Sheesh. We've got enough paranoia about swine flu and Y2K.

So this may exist on the playa?
There was a thread asking about chronic cough from dust exposure.
Search seems useless though.

Is it possible they were talking about this?

From CMR:
Coccidioidomycosis is caused by the dimorphic fungi in the genus Coccidioides. These fungi live as mycelia in the soil of desert areas of the American Southwest, and when the infectious spores, the arthroconidia, are inhaled, they convert into the parasitic spherule/endospore phase. Most infections are mild, but these organisms are frank pathogens and can cause severe lethal disease in fully immunocompetent individuals.
Oh, yeah, wear a dust mask or at least carry a scarf.

From Wikipedia:
The disease is usually mild, with flu-like symptoms and rashes, the Mayo Clinic estimates that half the population in some affected areas have suffered from the disease. On occasion, those particularly susceptible, including pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and those of Asian, Hispanic and African descent, may develop a serious or even fatal illness from valley fever. Serious complications include severe pneumonia, lung nodules, and disseminated disease, where the fungus spreads throughout the body. The disseminated form of valley fever can devastate the body, causing skin ulcers and abscesses to bone lesions, severe joint pain, heart inflammation, urinary tract problems, meningitis, and death.

It has been known to infect humans, dogs, cattle, livestock, llamas, apes, monkeys, kangaroos, wallabies, tigers, bears, badgers, otters and marine mammals.

So you are immortal, except for the semis? You may be looking for a Semi in a couple of thousand years out of sheer boredom.

I am thinking more people have died driving to and from the playa for whatever reason they want to go there whether it is: BM, camping, shooting, rocketeering, Land Speed Racing, hiking, etc, than die from any type of Fungus, dust borne illness, meteor strike, rabies infection from transient bats.

Just my opinion for what its worth. I stopped worrying about the desert illnesses in Northern Nevada years ago - someone else always makes up those statistics.

I'd bet on more deaths going to and from Burning Man alone (I wouldn't count the other activities) than from Valley Fever.

Good point. The statistics that they've made up about the event is that there are fewer deaths than in a regular city in the same period of time. So maybe the event saves lives. Excuse me, maybe our imaginings of the city saves imaginary lives.

I know how badly you want everything to be a homosexual double-entendre (for some reason) ;) but here is the sauce:
One day Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it and he asked the Bedouin, "Why don't you tie down your camel?" The Bedouin answered, "I put my trust in Allah." The Prophet then said, "Tie your camel first, then put your trust in Allah" (At-Tirmidhi).

How about this "silly" bit:
A better burden may no man bear
For wanderings wide than wisdom;
Worse food for the journey he brings not afield
Than an over-drinking of ale.
