It Runs In the Family

Post by themom » Wed Feb 11, 2004 2:39 pm

I am THE MOM...of Andie Grace (a.k.a. Action Girl) that is. If you don't know her you might search the site to meet this amazing human being. She finally got us to the event in '03...now we will never look back. I live in extreme northern CA. in nowhere land. Our home is in the Redwood Forest where we have our own pack of canines. We have hopes of building Black Rock Botanical Camp this year. If we can get enough help we will create a magical garden on the playa....every city needs a park. Any ideas???

Hello AG's Mom, and Welcome!

I've never brought any plants to the playa, I have read that sometimes there are problems with potted trees shedding leaves; thus creating MOOP. So maybe think in terms of plants that won't 'shed'.

Also, someone had posted last year that for '03, they were going to get rid of their grey water by dumping it into their potted plants/trees. I don't recall who it was, but it would be cool to find out how well that worked for them.: )

See lyrics to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (Lennon/McCartney) -- tangerine trees, marmalade skies, cellophane flowers of yellow and green towering over your head, bla bla bla -- keeping in mind that somebody's already done a Yellow Submarine, of course.

Image

Either that, or "MacArthur Park" (Richard Harris).
Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
Oh no!!
On second thought...

Hi themom,

It could be tricky bringing plants from your home without shocking or sun burning them. One spring I took a big house plant out into the shady part of my yard, after having it on the porch for a few days. It got to much sun it's first day out and all the leaves on the sunny side fell off that evening.

The fantastically amazing coffeeman of fire camp (I won't name names without permission) had several plants--ferns and a load of peppers he was going to transplant to larger pots while on playa are what I remember. He misted a lot and clipped yellow leaves and it was definately a where his heart was thing. The plants survived (some had made multiple trips over the years) he was happy, and he kept a very clean camp. It's definately doable.

My boyfriend and I got treated to dinner at his enclave Sunday night last year - it was a thing of beauty. (So was he, for that matter.... *grin*)

the MOOP factor is a definite concern with a lot of kinds of plants. I do remember someone -- in what was it, 97? 98? -- did a little slice of garden with "WATER ME" written on a sign so passersby would donate a bit of the water they were carrying. I dont' know what day of the event it was that I saw it, but it was flourishing.

I know this is anethema but, Should plant (that is, organic, green, living, etc.) leaves be a concern? Dare I compare it to the post burn ash and smoke that goes a stray?

He's a great host--that's for darn sure. And that gold scarf doesn't leave much to the imagination.

DUH! I never even thought of that! Personally, I think the plant matter would eventually blow into a vegetative area and then decompose, but during BLM inspections do they consider it MOOP?

Maybe we go overboard on the MOOP issue, but I don't think we have a choice due to the size of the event.

If we backtrack and let one form of MOOP slide, wouldn't we eventually become lackadasical about all forms of MOOP?

No MOOP

Post by themom » Fri Feb 13, 2004 11:17 am

I see several concerns over plant matter and dirt being strewn about. The garden would be enclosed, essentially in a 'holey tent'...letting proper light and air in and letting no matter out.[/url]

Yes, any matter, organic or not, that is not native to the area is "out of place". But the enclosure should keep things under control. I got the full rundown of all the gardeny things they're planning last night. My mom's going to have a rad theme camp. How awesome is that?

Anything that might shed leaves, needles, bark, etc. should be avoided.

At recent events, one "artist" used dozens of dead manzanita bushes, which as I recall took dozens of man-days for DPW to clean up after the event due to bits of leaves, bark & twigs shed over a large area; another left a whole bunch of grass turf, which turned into truckloads of crumbly dirt and straw.

Might look into something like a self-contained lath house, with window screen, shade cloth, or other fine-mesh fabric all around, including a liner on the ground underneath. The wood part can be burned, of course.

A misting system shouldn't be hard to rig. Try

yup, i was camped at the bayou (although it was mostly set up once I arrived so I don't claim any creative accomplishment). Very nice place to hang out on a hot afternoon after too many shenanigans the night before.

Hey rodent - met you at the Santa Cruz burn last year. I came with Crow. You live in that house at the end of the alley that I had sex on late one night in '93 or '94 -HA!

Whut UP Electrolux, nice to see your friendly face.

Plants: I've run a chill space much like the fern grotto with real grass sod and ferns and palms. The plants all made it back a second year and some made it for a third.

Greenery: we put it on a tarp so the alkalai playa wouldn't kill it and as to facilitate complete clean up. We also found that misting the grass was much more effective than pouring on water. the plants didn't get any special treatment besides misting and regular watering. they were in the shade the whole time.
