Anyone else going alone?
Anyone else going alone?
This will be my 3rd trip to Black Rock City and I am sooooo excited. Unfortunately, I MAY be going alone
I have never done this alone and so many feelings are stirring; anxious, scared, excited, sad, thrilled..you get the picture. I just want to know if there are any other burners out there about to embark on the same journey as I or perhaps you are a burner who has whethered the "elements" alone and can give me some safety tips. Can't wait to see you all again!
BOOBIES!!!
Me too
Hey guys,
I'm going alone too! I'm a first timer and I'm rather freaked out; I dont know much about the people i will encounter or anything. I'm up for an adventure, dont get me wrong, but if there was someone out there/people out there that I could meet in Nevada and travel with down to the playa that would be very awesome. I'm a Vassar College student, 19, love philosophy and art of course. Much into existentialism and meeting lots of new people

There are quite a number of burners from the Salt Lake City area going this year. There's also a regional burn on June 4,5,6 out on the salt plain near grantsville. Check out the regional events section of this messageboard and go to www.synorgy.org. Perhaps you can hook up with one of the handful of camps based in SLC or the UC.

Re: Anyone else going alone?
Last year there was a theme camp called "Solo Collective" which was comprised of singles, couples, etc and had over 200 people show up. This year the group has splintered into smaller pieces. Some of those pieces may still be accepting new members. Maybe check out the Ride Share area too, and maybe you can hook up with someone.Lorgasm wrote:This will be my 3rd trip to Black Rock City and I am sooooo excited. Riding solo from the land of lost wages...
Hey all ya all!
Virgin burner driving in from sin city/ land of lost wages otherwise known as Vegas. Not sure what creative things I'll be doing, but I have the survival thing cpvered (I think, or is it I hope). I'm looking for a camp to be part of or collaborating on something. Any good advice for a first timer???? I'm a massage therapist, and open to most any ideas. Can't wait for the burn!!!

Damn, we should just start our own camp... the Loners
( that was bad, i know). Hey like what everyone has been saying... i'm driving down solo at this point. It's still early, i'm hoping to meet some people to convoy with. Maybe we can use this thread for people to connect/ drive down with? Just a thought...

I'm going solo as well and it is my first time also. I'm trying to find a camp to call home....applied/filled out forms for the Lamp Lighters and just applied with LAF'ers (was SOLO I believe), waiting to hear back still. I'm making it a point to go alone my first time around. It's sort of a personal goal....."if I can make out to BM alone and survive...I can do anything" type deal..lol , but the camp part is important to me, mainly for a feeling of safety/security. I just want to know my stuff isn't going to be messed with or worry about getting completely lost from my small home at BM.
I'm driving out from Michigan....gonna follow a caravan of people from the area to BM most likely.

Just because you don't know anyone doesn't mean you've got to go solo. Last year I decided to go about June and put together a group of 4 people....who all cancelled on me with less than a month to go. I was facing the prospect of going alone and almost called it off, but then I decided to I was going to go no matter what happened with anyone else. I posted on the ride share board offering transportation from LA to the burn and had more than a dozen people contact me within a week. We talked on the phone a bit and emailed back and forth, but didn't have time to meet up until I picked them up on the way. Forming a camp with total strangers who soon became good friends was probably the best part of my burn last year. If you're still solo in a month or so and want someone to hook up with or just split travel costs, just post on the ride share board and you'll have tons of responces. Just remember to choose your companions carefully, make sure they have a ticket and seem responsible enough to not get themselves or more importantly you arrested or killed during the week.

I'm looking forward to going solo, but I would love to be creative with what I do for a living and it would be hard to do it on my own. I'm driving in from vegas if anyone is looking to caravan.

Alone vs not-Alone
I've gone alone in 99, 2000, 2003 and this year. I prefer alone vs not-alone. It keeps the nar-levels down when things get hectic.

I'll be in my blanket fort until further notice.
Going SOLO doesn't mean you will be alone!

I agree with MANOWAR, I'm a 'sophomore' this year and planning on going solo again. Last year, virgin burn, I had always intended to just show up and enjoy the experience not matter who I met or whatever would happen. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! I was blown away by the love and respect shown to me by folks who up to that moment were complete strangers. In that short week, those new acquaintences became dear friends. Evidence of that, we are all going back again this year and planning to camp together. So I say. Go for it. You're bound to meet other like minded, cool people. Solo doesn't mean you'll be lonely. Share the love.

Too much is never enough.
I am rather paranoid i wont get a ride. But i have faith in the Burning Man Community and its people.
I stay with the Lamp Lighters as i did last year, but i didnt spend a great deal of time in the village, i was out and about exploring a lot. I was a bit of a loner and i liked it that way. Who knows what this year will bring

i'm chiming in...i'm a first-timer going solo at this point too. i am actually looking forward to the adventure of doing this whole thing by myself, but part of the going solo purpose, for me, is to meet new people! so i hope to cross paths with others who are in the same mindset. i'm trying to do the cross country driving thing (never done it) and i'd love some burner company. i'm a 25 year old female theatre artist headed from washington dc to the west coast...i think i'm going to stay out there and hang in san fran for a few months after BM.
anybody on the east coast (DC/NYC) looking for a pre-burning man adventure? i'll post to the ride share in a month or so, but i want to get the wheels a-movin!

Being brave and also doing first time solo, and am as equally nervous as I am excited & anxious, just going to do my best to be prepared and hope for a great time.

There is a link to the 2004 rideshare board under one of the "need a ride" threads on the eplaya, can't remember which one...This is my third burn and I too am going alone. You might think it wouldn't be as scary if you've already been, but I think it is. This is my "independant woman" intitiation!
You just never know...
another idea for those coming alone
Don't know whether this is in the "too obvious to mention" category -- but volunteering with an established group is a GREAT way to give yourself a toehold in the city and meet lots of folks (including lots of experienced burners). I know that both the Center Camp Cafe and CampArctica (Ice sales) are very busy, fun places, have lots of jobs for unskilled folks, and have active pre-playa discussion lists and communities. (You can get to both through the Participate section on the web site.) I spent a bunch of my first year slinging bags of ice in the shade -- and it was a VERY fun midday break and way to meet people!

Please do not be sad my friend. I , the Sandman attempted what many considered crazy. I went alone to Burning Man as a virgin! Just my Ford Probe, A crap tent, and way to much water. It is an intense expearince and I beleive everyone should do it once. Being alone will force you into instant relationships with many people, and seeing many of the art installations alone is somewhat humbeling. Night time can be pretty lonely on the Playa, dark shapes passing by focused on there own reveries. And yet I think that was one of the lessons I learned at my first Burn. I kept hoping I would meet someone in a similer situation. I did not. Being alone can teach you a great deal about yourself and not being tied to any meeting place or schedule can be very nice! So try to enjoy the art of going solo!
