This was my first year and I went solo.

I liked not being responsible to anyone but me.

By reading most of the q&a thread I was so well prepared that people didnt believe it was my first trip.

I was free to help whoever needed me.

There was so much to see that I had to look at it as a scouting expedition for next year so I wouldnt beat myself up for not seeing everything.

I recomend the solo trip first. 8)

May I offer a keyboard with working shift keys and apostrophe key? It's so much easier to read posts with caps and 's.

Since you are asking, a few thoughts I offer to you.

You are under 21 so that limits your participation to camps not serving alcohol.

You say you do not care about a theme camp. So are you seeking a place to camp among other individuals without anything? You say you offer massage and have a table. Do you plan to give massage in the middle of the street? In the sunshine? In the wind and dust storms?

Unless you provide your own shelter for your massage gig, just having a massage table is not going to cut it. Next to lawn chairs, massage tables are probably the most common piece of furniture on the playa.

You might consider telling eplaya what you have to offer before seeking someone else to do your foot work for you.

Go through the regionals and try to find other burners to meet up with and see how you get along and how plans fall into place. Most smaller camps are groups of people who know each other or friends of friends.

Really hard to invite a complete stranger in to a small camp.

Hang out here and watch for the stag and orphan camps.

Dude there hasn't even been a regional yet. Someone advised you that it was next weekend up in Lakeland. Are you going? Can you make it? If you can't make it 300 miles away, how will you make it 3000 miles away?

Florida's rife with burners. Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Miami - two regionals per year in Lakeland.

If you can't figure out how to meet up with any of them...keep working on those massage skills. And maybe take a rudimentary writing course, while you're at it. Writing properly is a necessary life skill. Nobody would hire someone with a cover letter, resume, emails, etc. so riddled with poor grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. It speaks of laziness and a bad attitude, and reflects poorly on one's intelligence, abilities and professionalism.

texting society fall out

Post by Nitevenus » Thu Sep 23, 2010 12:39 pm

Not making any excuses for our weirdscience newbie but somehow our texting society seems to create this very thing. We see more of a lack of spelling, punctuation and grammar because of texting. However they should not be lazy and continue proper language skills with email and writing requirements.

@ weirdscience; go through the list of theme camps for 2010. Most of the lists include an email contact. If something catches your eye, contact them.....sell your talents and skills. Definitely get to your regional, for you will be able to learn alot from the veterans.

One of my good friend's up here (former Floridian - sat in the Reno airport together waiting and waiting for our flight home...) runs that (though I know the Preheat folks, too, just not as well). Enjoy.

I'll contend it started well before the advent of texting.
In a former life, I was an English teacher. I am the son of an English teacher.
You see a whole generation of people who, when confronted about their written communication skills, get indignant and exclaim "It doesn't matter!!", then shortly after proceed to lament their inability to get a job, or get respect in the workplace, or how America's failing and needs to be back at the top of the heap.

The irony, however rich, is not delicious.

Thank you to the others who've called it out. It's nice to know I'm not alone, however frail our numbers might be.

It's sympomatic of the hoi polloi's overall laziness and out-of-whack priorities.

It's been a good day for you, ygmir... you got to stretch out a little from the usual "You want to Supersize that for only 99 cents?".
