Tell Me About Recycling?

Postby Herring » Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:51 pm

I though I read about recycling at center camp, but now I can't find it. Am I mistaken, or is it true that someone or some crew will accept metal cans for recycling? I think I read that they donate the proceeds to local schools or something?

Anyway, I know it's a bit early to be planning my meals, but knowing all my beer cans and soup cans and veggie cans could be donated as recyclables instead of packed away by us when we leave would help in the planning *everything* process.

When I read about the recycling program I was all excited, but I've seen a lot of tips on the eplaya on how to clean cans and pack up garbage that don't mention on-site recycling, so that makes me doubt it's existence.

Center Camp takes aluminum cans. As far as I know thats the only kind....at least that's all we took them last year. It cut down on our take home garbage by half!

It was behind center camp in 2010 (6:00?). I bought our camps cans twice during the week. Make sure campmates know not to put cigarette butts (or anything else for that matter) into the empty cans or you'll end up lugging it back to camp along with any can that isn't aluminum (or aluminiium as the case may be). They were very appreciative of the bottle of vodka I gifted (as well as the 20 minute stint I did on the stationary bike that crushes the cans).

So they only take cola/beer cans? No soup cans? Or glass maybe? Is there a link on the main page about recycling? I still can't find squat aside from what y'all tell me... :|

Is it a theme camp or a volunteer crew?

Apart from aluminum the recyclables pretty much cost more in gas than anyone's going to get in return.
Of course, the proceeds at recycle camp are donated, but plan so that you take things in containers you are willing to take back. You can burn cardboard, but no plastic, please.

Awesome! That's the kind of info I was looking for! For some reason it didn't pop up when I searched the forums for "recycling"... I guess I should have tried "recycle"? Well either way, now all the info is easy to find, thanks everyone!

bring anything you can in recyclable aluminum. no plastic bottles. no glass. re-usable is even better. re-usables are best if constructed from metal or glass. plastic has limited re-usability. and the type of plastic it is made from seldom gets recycled. and it bleeds harmfulness into your food.
thanks a lot for the reminder for everyone of the 'pack it in pack it out' mentality.

I save aluminum cans for my own monetary gain. Only .40 cents per lb but it adds another $50 or so, give or take....in the course of a year of saving.

No! Aluminum cans only. Like AntiM said, the money gets donated.
I've read that like $10,000+ or so went to the schools in Gerlach one year.

...of course, there is always the DPW collection points on the way out of Burning Man...nice folks those DPW (just gift your glass and plastic recyclables to them!)

note: not recommended you actually try this...could be hazardous to your health

Uhhh No. DPW does not take your recyclables. There are trash and recycle collection stations between BRC and Reno. Some are free. others charge a small fee to fund a non-profit. Recycle Camp intends to provide a list during the event.

Heehee, yeah, I'm still a lush, however;
The goofy Canadian drank Jack most of the week and some Apple Pie concoction the poo haulers union came up with, that I have to say was delish! (all I remember is Everclear was somehow involved!) It was mostly the old farts in our camp that packed away 3 cases of beer!
