Seem we drifted the Survival thead.. So, lets start a gear thread..

I carry a whole camp in a box in the van at all times..

One item is for wet fire fuel.. It's a very old trick..Pine tree pitch/sap.. It burns like gas once started..

One of our trees drip sap all year.. All I need do is pick it up..If you get ti on your hands it's a mess.. So I dirp twig bunddel ends in it.. Then wrap the twiggs in wax paper.. Great for the fireplace..Ad a bunch in the van kit.

Sooo. Whats in your kit??

p.s. i plan to bring some of the sap this year.. hope you all steal a street sign heh heh

Hi, Unjon, Louise and I carry our earthquake survival gear in our vehicles, too. We have shelter (a tube tent in the car with rope to string it) and a regular tent in the van.

Instead of tree sap, you can dip cotton balls in vaseline (petroleum jelly) and put them in a film canister if you're old or a small bottle if you don't have film and have something that will catch fire with one match. We carry sailor's matches, which will strike when wet and burn longer than kitchen matches.

Plus they don't get sea sick as easily, and know lots of tuneful chantries.

The myth that they make good EMTs is an eplaya rumor and not to be trusted.

Ray mears uses a bic lighter and bike inner tube to start a fire when all else fails

i dont have a car so its a multi tool and improvisation in the event of an apocolypse for me

Flashlight, compass, maps, all pupose knife, extra batteries, magnesium/steel firestarter, matches, bic lighters, film can of fire starter, .32 automatic pistol, bottled water, gatorade, trail mix, jerkey, towel, roll of visqueen and a self-generating multiband radio.

I use SOS brillo pads with a magnesium flint striker. When I'm lazy, I just arc the steel wool over the terminals on my truck or deep cycle battery. In a lot of places it's too windy in the desert so I keep a shovel to dig fire pits with.

Put two bags of cat litter in the trunk of the kids car.
When it snows in Or. valleys it turns to ice.. We live on a steep hill..
When the streets clear the litter is use in the cat boxes..

My VW has enough weight with the rear engine.. I carry a small bag of litter for a pottie and under the wheel for traction..

I've got quite a bit of crap as I go 4x4ing out in the desert/mountains fairly often. Shovel, axe, pick, extra car battery, come along, tow straps, food, water, med kit, hi-lift jack, tools, wrist rocket, matches, walkie talkies...

That's the simplest fire starter, works well, cheap and easy to carry.

I can hardly add anything to the above really comprehensive lists. I have a pretty complete box in the ancient motorhome I take to the playa a few times a year. That one has some basic tools and belts and hoses. Sometimes I think I should add a second spare tire. The aerosol tire patch and mini compressor will do little for the gashes the desert can make in tires. And I have a small bag with minimum supplies I keep in the Subaru for travel in winter in the mountains. Go up and across often and know many horror stories to not have something. The two are somewhat different. One is for getting a big rig out of the desert, with not much thought about freezing or starving. The other is to keep from freezing and starving.

unjonharley et al, did you know ashes work better than cat litter for traction in; ice, snow, wet snow, sloppy deep wet snow, deep powdery snow & all types of snow b/c the carbon LOCKS the rubber tires to the snow.
Be sure it is free of nails etc.
I carry a lidded 5 gallon bucket of ashes with me as part of my kit, works like a charm and is free! Pour it over the drive wheels and in front of and in a line of intended driving direction and you'll drive out like it is a hot summer day on dry pavement, no joke, keep moving forward once the vehicle has momentum or you get stuck again.

carbon is also used for gold extraction mining, it 'grips'

I can fit close to 24 cans of pbr around the spare tire in the hidden compartment under the trunk. Just in case I run dry during that god awful 2am to 6am dry period in WA state!

...That's one of the first things I thought of when we bought a house with a pool...And to have an "emergency reservoir" has helped keep me inspired when I have to do underwater repairs (!) to the liner....

It cuts the risk of thyroid cansar from radation. not a cure.. get the pills from a health food store..

i carry 5gal of drinking water in the van.. We have some stored in the house and shop.. There is a very large fish pond in the front yard..

Louise and I were on the Caribbean island of St. Barth when it ran out of water.Literally. It's a desert island, and the ship that brings in drinking water had to be repaired. You don't drink out of the swimming pool, of course, but it works to rinse off in after a hard day at the sandy beach and the salty sea. And you use your empty water bottles to bring pool water back to your commode so you can flush it.

I never let a good opportunity to practice go by. Discovered some old/dry gloves, questionable tape, and 10+ year plastic sheeting which LOOKS good in it's packaging still, but the stuff is pretty cheap....so it's now on the Burner pile.

Decided to finally get a mask that allows me to wear any prescription glasses, checked my counter & dosimeter (wearing it daily for practice...zero roentgens so far...)

Also rotated some canned food, and re-filled my water (it was still "good", although plastic tasting).

Also tried to walk to the nearest high ground in less than 6 minutes...I just made it (my hip has issues, so I would have likely perished had I been in one of the cities with little warning time)
