Lemme rephrase - not one kid went missing from Kidsville ... that any of us know of.
I trust you guys found that missing non-KV kid? Or has he/she been press-ganged into doing trash walks with the DPW in exchange for a daily ration of Marlboros and limoncello?

Re: Hell, yes, kids
Kidsville has a good yahoo group:factoid wrote:We've been Burners off and on since '96 - the last "wild" year, arguably.
When our kids turned 3 and 5 in '05 we brought they - they had the time of their lives, and harshed no one's mellow, including ours. We brought them again in '06, and we're coming back this year.
Any parents looking for advice, answers, etc. are welcome to ping me - factoid (at) well dot com.
Now if only I could find a good Kidsville contact ...

Mayor Lora, GKOTU, is the mayor. we had tramps, a burn barrel, 500-ish kids-villians, 4 quads, curmudgeons, orphans, teens and toddlers.
My 5 yr old had a great time with his "kids" and where ever we went people were cool with our little burner.
I get to drive the ambulance how fast?!!

You and your pop
If you do go off to explore without your pop, perhaps you can find a great experience to bring him to during the event.
I'm a huge fan of Ashram Galactica, the classiest boite in Black Rock City.
They're usually located around 7:30 and B, or C. Bring him in for a drink if you're in the area- you'll both be happy you did.

For what it's worth, the Rangers take threats to children very seriously.
And yeah it has to be a personal choice of what you can explain to your kids and 100 other things that go into being a parent. That being said, I don't think that kids should be banned. I do wish we could be certain that the parents are suitibly able.

Here is my two-bits. Burningman is a pretty adult place, for the most part. People bring kids and I'd have brought mine when they were younger without any misgivings at all. That being said, my daughters, ages 18, 18 and 23 are welcome to go any time they feel like saving up the cost of the ticket and the $100 my camp charges for food for the week.
I'm a firm believer in the idea of kids learning the value of their experiences by working for them. Granted, I've also been called a big meanie by my daughters, who are satisfyingly self-sufficient. (smug smile)
Alternatively, guiding them into some volunteer activities, like maybe lamp lighting, with the idea of giving something back with the idea of "what can I give to BM" rather than "what is this event going to do to entertain me?".
I honestly cannot imagine any kid being bored after being turned loose at BM.

I wonder what the percentage of burners are second generation. I met a family back in 09 that was on our road whose teenage son had been going for years with his folks. I know I would have loved to see all the costumes and art cars and things that go burn burn when i was a youngster. having no kids I don't want to pass judgment on if i would bring them or not, but the ones I have run into never bothered me.

I hope you love your child wherever she/he is born.ygmir wrote:that, may well be very subjective......theCryptofishist wrote:I think one has been born there. What a horrible way to spend your vacation.

But...I wouldn't want my kid's first ever air breath to be full of playa dust--it's caustic nasty stuff. I don't think it would cause permanant health difficulties, but it's just plain rude.
You know, it's called "labor" for a reason, and while I hope that there was a nice air-conditioned RV and a midwife involved, and don't think that we should "medicalize" birth, I just think that on playa are crappy conditions for giving birth. Suppose you are cut--or worse yet the head tears--oh, I don't remember the name, but it makes the exit pathway a little bit bigger and gee that's tender and private flesh and who wants playa dust there either. And you're pretty much guarenteed that some hippie will find you and start giving tours of the miracle of life or some such nonsense. And that's a time when you need your sleep, you are not going to push out your off spring in 45 minutes one morning and be ready to dance all night at OT.
In short, dear Ygmir, those commercials lied. Two great things don't always go together.

I'm just sayin, for some, it may well be a wonderful experience, awkward, dangerous, and all.
Just wanting to be inclusive, of all POV's in that arena.
Yours, I'm sure, is the most common and accepted.
Sometimes, I'm just plain contrary......dang me.

My son is 10, and I'll consider taking him if he writes a nice essay about why he wants to go to Burning Man. He has his own computer, so he can type it out himself, and I'll require a few quotes from websites related to Burning Man and a couple of Burning Man pictures. He hangs out in our motorhome even when it's just parked in the driveway and does his homework there.

After describing the Burning Man experience, my son has elected to not go this year. I trust his judgment. If he did go, it would be under the understanding that the other members of our camp are not to alter their experience due to his presence. He would be exposed to some of the same distractions and temptations he will likely face later in his adolescence, and it would be up to him to be able to make the best choice for himself. He felt he wasn't ready for that at the extent as found at Burning Man, and I respect that. Either that, or he just didn't want to see a bunch of naked old people.
