a couple of questions...

Post by STUMPIES » Fri Jul 23, 2004 11:45 pm

1) is it crazy to want to sew together a shade cloth for my dome with regular fabrics like faux fur (that doesn't shed) and leather and cotton with a tarp underneath it for water-proofing?
2)are painters tarps (the beige ones) a reliable shade?
3)how many times can you layer the shade material (inteded for geenhouses and such) i know this sounds silly but i worry about it having a reverse effect
4)are those outdoor carpeting prone to shedding? i bought one w/out thinking- it doesn't seem to fall apart but i don't want to take any chances
5)every year we've camped w/others- this year there's only two of us and i worry about theft a bit- any suggestions (besides locking up valubles in your car) of how to feel a little more at ease about leaving food/drink kitchen supplies/ etc... (i only ask because we has some things stolen a few years ago out of our shade structure)

i guess that's about it.... stumps

STUMPIES,

Is your sewing and fabric able to take 70 mph winds?

Anything fuzzy or nappy, like fur or velvet or carpeting, will collect LOTS of dust, and that overhead may result in you getting dusted every time you bump into it. Like walking through a pine forest after a heavy snowfall.

As far as securing your valuables, if you can't lock 'em in your car you may wish to consider bringing a cheapo footlocker- Just like in the Default World, if someone REALLY wants your stuff they can get it , but most stuff goes missing because it was EASY and QUICK to steal. On the other hand, last year I brought a huge lockbox with padlock and chain, to secure to the frame of the dome or car axle or something, and ended up not using it.

thanks- i didn't even consider the dust build up on the fur! the locker idea sounds like a good one; even if you don't use it it can house other things in transit so it wouldn't be taking up any more space.

I have a small box with a combination lock that i lock my things in, i then tuck the box in a milk crate and throw whatever i need in a box ontop.

I worry about people stealing my things, mostly my wallet

I've found that the astro turf type stuff does. I went camping with a friend recently and she had some green stuff that looked like astro turf but was a felt material. Very soft on the feet. I did'nt notice any shedding. She bought it at Costco.

Booze MIGHT get stolen, but you prolly just gifted it and forgot. Never heard of kitchen stuff getting ripped off. Wallets, generators, stereos, etc.... well... do what you can.
Get an extra set of keys and put them behind your license plate (run the license plate screw thru your spare key) that way, when you get so anal about securing your wallet and also lock your keys in the car, you can get both out.
Astro turf - yes, the plastic green astro turf with the black rubber backing WILL shed.... put a tarp down first, then you can just roll it all up together.
The nice, soft velvet-like stuff seems to hold up better.

I forgot to mention...

I think it is a good idea to leave an extra $20 or so along with maybe a phone card in your car tucked under you seat. I put mine with my "clean clothing" for the trip back into the default world after Burning Man. I have clean clothes, a few extra bucks and a phone card JUST in case.

ok, so the astroturf i have is actually indoor/outdoor carpeting. i think i purchased it at costco, and it's soft and all- but when i ruffle the fibers it seems to shed a few. i should leave it a home, right? it's got a natural rubber backing with olefin fibers. [/i]

All brand new carpet sheds at first. Can you spread it out somewhere and walk on it a bit and vaccuum it several times? Might help.
