Just make room in your budget for a portable ash tray. The only butts I want to see on the playa are human and naked!

So the pipe tobaco makers figured they could get in on the market by making an unflavored tobaco for making your own smokes.

Now I can keep my filthy habit and not go broke!

I will have to check that out next time I'm at the smoke shop., thanks for the tip.

FWIW, a carton of Camels is running about $48 in Denver. Pretty much everywhere except Shell gas stations. For what ever reasons their cigarettes are extra expensive around here.

Thats hella cool FigJam!
It kind of looks like some sort of brain-sucker-outer thing.
It would be silly if you found one of those bubble things that are on hair salon chairs.
Or an Umbrella, so you would be out of the sun and in the AC.

Just bum your smokes from Simon. He loves to give out smokes every year, he brings a military duffel packed with cartons just for this purpose.

Wherever you buy them, make sure you take a few minutes to de-package them. Remove them from the carton, take off the whole outer plastic, the inner foil liner -- all of it -- less packaging means less moop. Then, re-package them into large freezer bags. Should keep them relatively fresh until you're ready to use them.

As a dedicated smoker, allow me to offer a tip about lighters. Buy a big pack of them, tie several of them to two-foot-or-so twine, affix the twine solidly to the lighter with a little duct tape. Then, once you're on site, you can tie them where you'll often be looking for them - near your tent/car/rv, on your shade structure, on your camp chair, in your chill space, on your bike, near your kitchen - wherever makes sense to you. When the need arises, voila! And when your campmates ask to bum a light for the ten thousandth time, you can point them toward the pre-arranged flame.

Of course, make sure you've got a sturdy, reliable and portable ashtray for forays away from camp, but the truth is, after a day or so, you'll start shoving them into pockets and bags and anywhere safe - something you would probably never do at home with clothes you value - until you can get back to your camp trash.

And yes, bring more than you think you'll need. Between cig bummers, long days of little sleep, potential hours hunkered down during white-outs with nothing else to do, and the well-known effect of certain substances on one's desire to smoke more and MORE AND MOOOOORE - you'll go through them like you never thought possible, and be hurting when you run out early.

And to you anti-smoking zealots, thank you very much for minding your own business. I live in San Francisco and have to deal with the whining anti-tobacco nutjobs every day. I have worked for months and spent thousands of dollars to get to Burning Man, and I'm certainly not interested in your opinion of my personal habits.

See you on the Playa. And can I bum one? I ran out.

Hey anti-smoking nutjobs:

The writer of this post didn't ask about your opinion of smoking. He didn't ask to be lectured and denigrated. He did not ask for your permission or your attitude or your condemnation. He asked about buying cigarettes cheap for the burn. He came to ePlaya to get information from experienced burners about the burn. I replied with real, tested information that he could use. You replied with ignorant, judgemental bullshit.

Snark is snark, and snark is cool, but anti-tobacco zealotry is tired, regressive and pretentious.

On that note,
What ever happened to the cigarette smoking camp that was on Esplanade last year? Did anyone stop by there?

I really wanted to but couldn't find it. And now, I can't find the thread about it either.

hey person who i will not name..

the writer of this post can handle it.. she has shown so..

i replied with real tested information that smokers can use...( smoking has been proven to kill people and telling folks about that is useful information)

you replied with ignorant, judgemental bullshit...

(im not the guy who banned smoking in your favorite restaurant.. hell, i wouldnt and dont support that.. but of course.. anyone who tells you that smoking is bad for you is clearly a zealot who wants to force you to stop... in fact.. im fine with people smoking in public, in grocery stores even.. but a gentle reminder that it can kill you, and does kill people is surely not out of place, or ignorant,... or judgemental.. because you probably are a fine person.. and you are probably so awesome that you dying from smoking is probably gonna be bad for family and loved ones.. )

so dont smoke ciggs, and quit now... because it can kill you.

smoking killed my father in 2007.. its killed many people i know..and the ones who havnt died yet suffer from addiction to ciggs that drains their bank account and their stamina/general health.. (not to mention puts a hamper on the places we can go/hotels we can stay at)

i wouldnt fight for and dont support bans on smoking but sheez you got to be a real idiot to think that someone saying smoking kills is "ignorant" or "judgemental"

-
SINCERELY:

someone who thinks people who complain about cigg smoke in public are idiots

Yup. I just ran through the ten principles again, and I must have missed the one about preaching anti-tobacco zealotry.

Then I checked the name of this board -- Preparation, Tips and tricks. Again, nothing about criticizing other people's choices on or off the playa.

But clearly, your whining rants are significantly more helpful and burnier than me. I am sooo very sorry for having interrupted your ALL CAPS RANTING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE AND THEIR CHOICES.

omg looks like someone has a hobby horse issue!!!

at least we have a reason to show the greatest hits of my obviously judgmental anti-burning man behavior (which occured before you replied with inane bullshit)

most people ive known tend toward smoking more at burning man than normal.. often complaining about no ciggs/asking for them before the end of the week

for some reason folks who havnt been before presume smoking LESS.. due to heat.. being busy..etc..

but that doesnt seem to be the case..

or..just stop smoking now..

look at me go!!!

THAT really is some really big huge zealotry and judgemental stuff i just said there, i can see why it set you off... especially the part where i said that people who smoke are worthless people and how i dont like them.. the part where i said people shouldnt be allowed to smoke.. and the thing where i was criticizing people for choosing to smoke......

except... i didnt do any of that.

i just said dont smoke.

and i showed a picture of a diseased lung.. and i made a joke about how we should start smoking because some money goes to fund health insurance.

i know i put some big spaces between the lines here... but ive not put those spaces there so idiots like you can fill it in with bullshit you just made up.

i dont know what set you off.. so clearly this must be a hobby horse of yours... it isnt surprising that you deal with so-called nutjobs every day... considering your actions here i bet youre filling in the blanks in real life too!

kindly fuck off!

smoking kills, we all know that shit.

what i said before you got set off wasnt an example of me judging anyone, i didnt chastise anyone for their choices.., i didnt suggest anyone is a bad person.. i didnt even tell people what proper behavior is ...

and after i set you off with my totally outrageous remarks... i totally said that smoking can kill you.. without suggesting youre a bad person, or that you shouldnt be allowed to smoke.. i hoped that you dont get sick, even, .. i said that you replied with ignorant judgemental bullshit because you did..... because you judged me wrongly (which i pointed out when i mentioned that i am in fact not an anti-smoking zealot with my mention that i dont support smoking bans)

so kindly... mr judgemental ignorant fuckhead.. kindly fuck off.

there are way cooler issues to be a vocal proponent of than smoking... especially when the bullshit yer spouting about was never even mentioned... until you brought it up.

(and ..you should probably quit smoking.. you know.. before it kill you)

I really never understood how people can go through an entire pack in a day @___@

Say you sleep for 8 hours a day so you are awake for 16, you are smoking a cigarette from the moment you wake up every 48 minutes @___@ WTF

When I used to smoke smoke (I give in when I'm drunk) I would hover around 3 on average a day up to 5-6 max, whenever I smoked 5-6 a day I felt so disgusting.

Anyways, you can roll your own menthols and if you want to roll them on the playa just get a roller so even if you're extremely drunk or just intoxicated on something else you can still roll a cig :)

I had a shipmate who lit one ciggie off the next every moment she was awake. We hated going to her desk to drop off chits. Then the Navy made smoking indoors against the rules. We joked about moving her entire office out onto the smoking deck. Hard transition for her, but she was out there on the hour, all weather smoking. Good thing she wasn't essential personnel and got to go home during typhoons, she'd have died locked inside for three days. Or we would have been murdered.

Speaking strictly, flicking ash and even exhaling while smoking violates LNT principles.

It is my right to to use tobacco, even in a sacred manner. I do not smoke in public. If you need a pipe or cigars, or ciggies just stop by the Reno Colony smoke shops. They have a nice collection of native arts at the smokeshops.

I quit smoking in January and use a vaporizer now. A 50ml bottle of smoke juice costs me $14, lasts a month, and is equal to 4 cartons. An additional benefit, besided not having the other 4,000 chemicals in my lungs, is that I can use it anywhere. Restaurants, libraries, DMV, doctors office, movie theaters, other people's cars, etc, and have never been asked to stop or leave...
Don't go with the BLU cigarette look alikes and their ilk... They suck and can only lead to relapse.

Don't quit til you're ready. That leads to relapse as well.

Don't buy into the myth that American Spirits are better for you because they're natural, bullshit.

I don't mind folks smoking around me. I let them smoke in my truck.

I'm bringing a few packs that I still have to hand out singles to folks who need one. I might even go out and buy a few more packs.

In the desert where you're miles and miles from the closest ruddy-skinned vendor, a single cigarette can equal a handjob. A pack? They love you loooong time.

We used to call Spirits "Geronimo's Revenge". Like I said, quit 5+ years ago, but I still buy a can of powder snuff (aka "cowboy cocaine") every couple months for the nicotine fix.

If you're driving in from California on I80 into Reno, right before you get into Reno there is a little Indian Smoke Shop right off the freeway. It's at the Verdi exit, at Gold Ranch. The Smoke Shop is across from a Taco Bell(Another good reason to stop) I forgot the name of the place, it's cheaper than most of the shops in Reno, definitely cheaper than the shops by Pyramid and in Wadsworth/Gerlach.

Since I have a bunch of smokers here, may I ask a question? My shade structure is no smoking because of my asthma. Outside, I just move downwind, but my playa home is smoke free. I don't mind asking nicely, but sometimes it seems as if a sign would be easier. Would it? Or would it be a challenge and get smoke in my face?

No one has ever been mean or rude, but some folks do stroll in lit up without thinking about it.

Thoughts?

That's one of my pit stops along the way, you don't even have to get out of your car- it's got a drive thru. For some reason they were closed last year, may have closed early on Sunday.
