ARE SWORDS ALLOWED

Post by Anubis1669 » Fri Aug 23, 2013 9:37 pm

Hello

i am a responsible sword owner... I wish to practice ta'i chi in the mornings away from the general populace. I know to lock it up, i know no to threaten to decapitate zombies...i know it will get roached in the dust...but i do not know is if it will be confiscated

Weapons aren't allowed. I don't know about swords specifically, but if gate determines it to be not allowed, they won't confiscate it, they'll just tell you you can't come in with it.

The permit rules say no blades longer than 10 inches from tip to hilt. See here:
https://www.federalregister.gov/article ... r-the#h-20
for the definition of weapons, which includes swords.

They made collapsable taichi swords without sharp edges. With nice tassle. Most taichi swords I've seem are fliming decorations suitable for practice.

I think we are dealing with a double edge sword, so to speak.
A long piece of pointed rebar could be considered a weapon if it's waved around in a threatening way. When this rebar is stacked on the ground ready to be pounded, no one gives a thought to it.
With that said, you will be waving the sword around for the purpose intended, but the use may be misinterpreted as a weapon.
My thought is to have a wooden mock-up made and use that. Just better to be safe than to lose it to an over zealous cop.

We had a long conversation about this last year.

I suggest using a wooden sword. Your tai chi sword is probably aluminum anyway.

There are many instances in which carrying a sword would be considered a religious/cultural practice or part of a sport or martial art.

You've been burning since 2003 and this is the first and only comment you make on eplaya? You must be very passionate about swords.

For some reason everytime I read the subject of this thread, I laugh. It's like we are all sitting around a room, talking quietly among ourselves about playa conditions and what food to bring and clothes to wear and then suddenly someone randomly yells out "ARE SWORDS ALLOWED??".

Mark Day's 24 hours at burningman 2013 video showed a woman doing a dance routine on stage with a sword.

Now as to the whether it was a real sword with a sharpened or dulled edge or a fake sword made of say, silver painted wood I certainly couldn't tell from the video.

looked real enough to me.

I've seen tons of lightsabers there. Epic battles ensued.

May I suggest aluminum foil over cardboard, if you need a particular shape of sword.

Sikh persons carry knives as part of the 5 Ks. In my home town, we have many Punjabi immigrants of the Sikh faith. The Kirpan is a ceremonial double edged blade carried by baptized Sikhs. It is a religious commandment.

As others have answered many times, no swords are not allowed (even if they're fancy, even if they're ceremonial). Whether you dream of showing off your sword-swallowing skills or have some other kind of performance or ceremony in mind, I strongly suggest that you consider either a faux weapon or some other type of performance.

Since this thread had been posted (and died its natural death), Burning Man has clarified its position/policy with regards to weapons. You can find out more about that here. As that position is not open to debate, this thread is being closed.
