Don't forget to panic - 100 DAYS!!!

Post by trilobyte » Fri May 16, 2014 9:01 am

Take a deep breath, everything will be okay, there is no cause for alarm.

I lied - it's time to panic!

The gates to Burning Man 2014 open in 100 days!!!

Tossing around ideas for a a project? Been meaning to build a new shade structure for your camp? Wanted to turn your beat up playa bike into something magical and awesome? Dreaming of sewing up a storm and creating some amazing playawear? Then get to work! Believe me, the time FLIES BY. If you've got a busy day job and life and can only really do stuff on weekends, there are only 16 of those left. Were you planning on using that weekend before the gate to travel to the playa... down to 15. Living in the states? 2 of those weekends are holiday weekends, which either means you get an extra day or two, or you lost them altogether because of family or social obligations. Summer campouts or concerts on your calendar? You get where I'm going with this... it's time to stop dragging your feet!
  • If you're thinking about building an art installation or working on some kind of media project (ie shooting photos or video for anything other than personal use), you can register for those projects by going HERE.
  • If you've been meaning to get involved and volunteer with one of the Burning Man departments or teams, you can fill out the volunteer questionnaire by going HERE.
  • Prepping happens one day at a time - check out the 'One Item A Day' thread to follow other peoples' progress as they plan their burns.
  • If you have one or more tickets but have been on the fence about going this year, now's the time to start making up your mind. If you go, you've got time to pull the rest of your plans together. If you decide not to go, you can make other burners in our community very, very happy by selling your tickets/vehicle passes back into STEP (via the link on your Burner Profile page), or by offering them at face value here on ePlaya.
Get 'Er Done!!!

Yup, 100 days seems like a lot but in reality, it's not. Better get those projects finished!

Bump! I'm switching to full gear prep this weekend. I got a jumpsuit to sew, camp structure to complete, and friends to collaborate with. This is a good kick in the ass for those who need that perspective to get moving and building their burn.

I panic right before the High Sierra Music fest, which is usually the first time in the year I take my Beastie out on the road. I have then ample time to check out what I may have left in there (oh THATS where those shoes are), what I'm missing, and what I need to pack. The burn is halfway packed for then once I get home.

Panic? Who panics???

I have been trying to negotiate my vacation time around the burn... As far as I can figure, I need to be back home on Thursday (Wednesday?) of event week (maybe). Gah!! I am going nuts not knowing my timeline, no flights booked yet, volunteer commitments are up in the air. All I know right now is that I am probably flying directly to Reno, possibly returning at some undetermined date during burn week. Whatever happens, I anticipate 2 weeks on the playa - I hope.

I did manage to get my passport renewal in on the last possible day available.

What's there to panic about? Some food, some shelter, some water, I'm ready to go. Oh... I do need to decide on outfits. Damn, now I'm stressed.

I guess I need to open the camper and see what was in it when I closed it last year at BM. I am not stressed out, but I am going to sell my Suburban and buy a "new" one before I go....now, that is a project. It has 280,000 miles on it now, and I just don't want to do the 6,000 mile round trip hauling the trailer with it again. It will have 300,000 miles on it by that time I am ready to head out.....I need a new one. Part of my procrastination is that I don't want to lose my BM bumper stickers.

85 days! Starting to panic a little.......

Once it hits double digits, it goes FAST!
Still got LOTS to do.
Unpack my bins.
Clean everything.
Change tho oil in my truck and rotate the tires.
Re-do my Figjam Bucket Cooler for more water capacity.
Buy more booze and mixers.
The list goes on and on.........

PANIC!

Hopefully the only panicking you do is the exciting and fun kind :)

Pro-tip:

Start locking down your projects and commitments sometime in the month of June. Take a little time to go through your lists, and make the hard decisions on what to put off for next time. They're tough because you want to do everything this year, even moreso if it's your first time coming to Burning Man (regionals are awesome, but aren't the same). One of the biggest traps people fall into is getting over-extended or over-committed. That not only gets really expensive, but it adds a significant amount of additional stress (and physical exhaustion) in the weeks leading to the playa. When you get to Burning Man, you want to be full of energy and raring to go, not wiped out and physically exhausted.
