Sooo..what are the rules on nudity?

Post by HEATHER_INVICTUS » Sat Aug 09, 2014 3:03 am

I've seen topless pictures of burners on the internet, but what about full nudity? Or fully nude, but body painted?

Just put a towel down before you sit on the piano bench.

Total nudity is a problem. Please be sure to wear shoes and a hat for obvious reasons! 8)

I have never heard of any problem with full nudity, and I go naked quite a bit myself. There is probably a law against it, but all laws are enforced on a basis of priority; and there is a concept called "community standards", which has been known to trump very-low-priority laws. And at BM the community standard is very much full acceptance of full nudity.

One rule, as mentioned already: Don't sit on anyone else's property (chair, bicycle, rug, bar-stool, etc) unless you brought a towel to sit on. So I recommend a luggage rack or basket on your bicycle, and keep a clean towel there at all times, since you never know when you might be invited to stay a while somewhere.

I strongly recommend building a "base tan" all-over before BM, to avoid sun-burning.

Please also understand that nudity and sexual activity are two different things. Sexual activity in public view is illegal, and this is enforced.

If your bicycle should need repair on Playa, bring it to Elliot's Naked Bicycle Service. Nude customers go straight to the front of the line. :D

Also, while nudity in general is totally A-OK, I think people would appreciate it if you stayed away from Kidsville while naked. It probably isn't a huge deal, but that's the only consideration I would make.

For most of the event nudity barely even registers. It's why "shirt cocking" exists, as horrible a thing as it is. Guys want to draw attention to their penis, but simply being naked isn't enough since everyone is so desensitized to nudity, so they wear a shirt but no pants to draw attention to the fact that they're pantsless. That's my interpretation, anyway.

Last year I pick up a nude couple while out making the rounds with the chariot. He is trying to achieve some enlightened moment where clothes or nudity do not matter. She is quiet, but confident. Both are young, fit, tanned. They are comfortable being nude, yet still feel judged, so he feels uncomfortable, she feels less so. Whatever. I mean, if the person I'm with is ok hanging out with me nude, metaphorically screw everyone else, right? He asks if I know where they can go where their nudity will not be an issue, but a public place where there are people... I end up dropping them at the Man. Seemed like alot of mental gymnastics and agonizing over being in the desert with some hot naked chick (Looking at the situation thru his eyes).

Actually, I think they want the comfort of no pants, and the sun protection of a t-shirt for their shoulders. One year perhaps I will make shoulder capes for pantsless men.

You can also choose to carry a sarong instead of a sitting towel, in case you feel the need to dress up. Or protect your shoulders.

In the years that we are allowed to camp anywhere with early entry we like to be across from kidville and Hushville. No loud MV's at night parking in front of our tents. Nudity is ok. Kids don't judge.

Having camped in Kidsville I can say that nudity is just fine. The year we were there, one of the dads walked around naked with a sock on his penis the entire week. Kids aren't bothered by nudity at all.

(As an aside, I and every parent I know who has taken kids to a burn all say similar stuff - do not censor yourself in front of my kids. It is my responsibility as a parent to move my kids away from anything I might find problematic. It is not your job to worry about that).

Now of course if YOU aren't comfortable being nude near Kidsville, that's on you.

Since I am on the border of Kidsville this year, and have been a frequent neighbor in Hushville, yeah, kids don't care.

Glad you helped him "man up" to his nudity.

Funny how that would seem to call even more attention to the nudity. Then again, it's really nothing more than what a bikini does.

I heard somebody talked to a snake or ate an apple or something, then BAM, clothes. That's why everyone was so worried about the rumor last year involving a shipping container full of snakes.

But my penis gourd is often referred to as a shipping container full of snakes...

A few years back I remember watching a bunch of naked women having a photo shoot and LEO came along and had photos of themselves taken with the women. But, yeah, shirt-cocking, out come the tasers.

Yes, I found a cool basket for my bike! I'll remember to bring lots of clean towels lol.

My base tan is pretty decent & I'm excited to even it out haha.

I'll definitely come to you if my bike breaks down! Thanks for the heads up! Where on the playa can I find you?

Careful! By base tan I mean all over. If you have pale areas, you will need to use some serious sun-screen lotion on those areas. And it is too late to bring those areas "up to speed" -- that must be done gradually.

And look yourself over for areas you might not have thought about; such as your feet, if you suddenly try wearing sandals. My feet got sunburned in stripes from sandals a couple weeks ago.

A note of CAUTION to anyone who uses medical trans-dermal patches:

The skin where my patches have been seems to become EXTREMELY sensitive to sunlight. I currently sport several bright red little ovals that appear -- and hurt -- just like sunburn.

While we are on the subject, my doctor warned me that some regular medications -- that is, pills -- also make the skin more sensitive to sun.

(I'm posting this on two threads. I know, I know, cross-posting is frowned upon, but I want to reach as many as possible. Hopefully I can get away with it this once, in the name of public health service.)

Other medications also make skin extra sensitive to sunlight, such as the antibiotic doxycycline.

Man it is strange... I am soooo nervous about being nude. Deep down issues with my self esteem I am sure.
But last year in the wee hours of the night I had to go to the porto so bad and I could not find my clothes so I just went for it.
Mind you I did have my headlamp and one blinky light around the back of my neck so I was not a darkwad :)

SO liberating. I was proud of myself:) Ha!

You don't necessarily have terrible self-esteem. Nakedness is also conditioned out of us from a young age for so many reasons. I mean--I used to wear glasses and a wristwatch, and getting rid of them made me feel very strange and exposed. (I still wear the glasses at night, but they used to be a form of daily armor.) To leave off anything you normally have can feel mighty strange.

There are also those of us who are just sort of private and personal with our nudity. :)

That's awesome.

I am not a regular nudist, but I still feel pretty good about the open-air shower I took @ my first Burn, on the last day. I was so desperate to be clean I took a look around, and then just did it.
