When I was a kid, my best friend's dad was a pharmacist and he told me this same thing. Said it clogs the pores so the mosquitoes may land on you but aren't able to stick their proboscis through your skin. (Of course I was 12 at the time so I may have remembered that last part wrong...but at least I got to use the word "proboscis" in a sentence.)Canoe wrote:For mosquitoes here, B Complex vitamins. Antihistamines. The kind you take once every 24 hours. Because the swelling and itching from bug bites is a histamine response. Does the trick when I go camping in Ontario.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
I did it again, used the ticking cloak as motivation for getting my stuff together. I made some headway and in my remaining day off I will have to sort the clothing situation and pack the car. Today I:
Upgraded my AAA to PLUS
Pre-programmed all my stops on the GPS
Filled the tank and spare diesel container
Cleared out maps, headrests and anything I didn't want in the car, from the car
Received/tested out cross bar rails for the roof rack so I can throw the bike up top in Reno
Brought air fresheners (Car and tent), and everything else on my list
Packed everything but clothes (and debating whether I should take a cooler now that the POS cheapo tent from Costgo was returned I should have the room)
For the last week I've been increasing water consumption and bike riding
still have to wash, vacuum and have the DPF replaced on the TDI (Friday if the part comes in), if not I'll be taking the Subaru at less than half the MPG (and diesel is cheaper than UNL locally to boot)

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
The past few days I've been a mess, but today... good things happened today. I managed to find somebody to fill in for two days of BM. I went from zero to five letters of reference on the job application in a matter of hours (and here I thought I'd have trouble finding four letters!). I met with both of my co-workers and they seem content that we've got enough of a handle on projects that I can leave without dumping everything in their laps - I mean, I'm still dumping lots in their laps, but at least it's not *everything.*
I still have a heap of work to do and am very stressed out, plus there's all that insurance f*ckery to work out, but it now seems doable - if still vaguely irresponsible to my own health and sanity - to participate at TTITD this year.

Hooray, BoyScoutGirl, that is great news! I hope that your participation, should you manage to pull it off, do wonders for your sanity and happiness.
Having grown up in an area with lakes and rivers and lots of seasonal critters, my feeling is that those buggers tend to need both moisture and shadey green spots in order to survive and thrive. They were on the playa when people arrived because, for the first time in the history of the event (that we know of), there had been rain at least once a week all summer into the first week of August. Buggy nirvana! However, it's been dry since, and the forecast is for truckloads of more hot and dry. With no water and shadey green bits, I anticipate (and hope) that the numbers will rapidly dwindle. We shall see. I booked a decent mosquito net for our bed, and a bottle of repellant, mostly as a safeguard. Murphy's Law kind of demands that in order to insure I won't need those things is for me to have prepared for it (because the stuff you didn't plan for is much more likely to happen, right?)... so we'll see.
Lots of projects coming together, but still so much to do. And dammit I still have pre-cooking to do, as well.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
Well, we have bug hats and jackets which Larry was issued when he was deployed to Thailand for Cobra Gold exercises, so he's digging those out. We have assorted bug sprays, and the stuff to treat fabric. Maybe an old bug zapper, and I have one of those electrified "bug racket". Those are actually kinda fun, and cruel.
Larry went to pick up the fancy new topper for the pickup. They ordered the wrong size. I feel bad, that's an expensive mistake for a small company, but it was definitely the error of the guy putting in the order. So we have a loaner topper instead. Doesn't match, meh, and is a little beat up, which is just fine. Actually works out better, because the payment is deferred until we get back and get the right top.

Re: 2015 one item a day for BM list..
With it being my first year building a mutant vehicle AND engineering our entire camp, I was always hesitant to post a "One Item a Day" task here because it seems like I was never actually done with any items. However, yesterday was a big day, in that I narrowly avoided potential disaster. After much measuring and re-measuring, for weeks I was sure our enclosed rental cargo trailer was big enough to hold the mutant vehicle. But yesterday it dawned on me....would it fit through the back "doorway" when I was loading it up the ramp?
Nope. The back is about 6" too high.
After my panic attack, I realized that because I will be doing the final attachment of the roof on playa, I hadn't permanently attached the back headboard piece (which ties into the roof), and also is the the highest point of the vehicle. So I can remove that fairly easily before we load it. Which just means I'll basically be building the damn thing on the playa from scratch is seems.
I'm sure I will have all sorts of other issue come loading day, so I am extremely glad this show stopper was discovered now. Just when you think you thought of everything....
