Dust mask for fractured eyesocket/cheekbone area in SF area
Hi,
This is a rather unusual request but I'm a bit stuck so putting it out there.. I'm a virgin burner and was looking forward to picking up some cute rose tinted Steampunk goggles for my first burn, but have managed to come off my bike over the weekend and have broken my fall with my face and in the process fractured my eye socket and cheekbone area in four places!!! Doc says I'm looking good to take my flight over from Sydney but I will need to find some goggles that don't apply direct pressure to the fractured area and will keep dust out of both the eye area and grazed/cut parts of my face. I'm thinking some form of gas mask or helmet may do the trick but at am a loss where to look when I get into San Francisco and don't like my chances of finding something here in Sydney. I've seen a few models online but really want to try it on to make sure its going to be comfortable given my fragile state...
I Will most likely be doing my shopping around Haight and would love any advice anyone may have for me on where to look for head gear??
I'll likely wear sunglasses for the most part and just use the head gear if the dust kicks up (please speak up if I'm being naive here - I'm a newbie!).
Looking forward to the BURN!!!!

You will be miserable in a gas mask or helmet. Hot, stuffy and uncomfortable.
For what it's worth, I very rarely bother with goggles because they fog up. Sunglasses are usually good enough, but that's me. YMMV

Look for a "Full Face Respirator". They come with one and two filters.
Can normally be found at fire and safety stores. Minimal models are not very expensive, will distribute slight pressure all around your head and do what you are looking for.

Try looking in a store that sells safety supplies. They will have goggles, face masks etc. I don't know my way around San Francisco but this will give you some locations. https://www.google.com/search?q=direct+ ... +francisco
Make sure you can wear sunglasses with whatever mask you get. Good luck.

Oh no! Well you have a few weeks to heal, here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Get some good rest and take care of yourself now because the Burn will be hard on your body. The cheapy dust masks from a hardware store just have a rubber band to hold them on, it's not tight or high pressure. Hopefully you have another checkup with Doc in a few weeks and he can tell you if this would be OK.
I have a thin sheer scarf that I pull over my whole head/face when the wind kicks up, over my eyes and everything. I can see thru the fabric just fine, but it cuts down the dust. I look like a freak riding a bike with a sheet wrapped around my head, but hey, it works!

Get well soon.
I pictured a kind of monogoggle/eye patch affair.

Go with a pair of old ski goggles. Most sizes will fit outside the eye orbit plus they usually have a soft spongy seal. That, plus a shemagh and you're set!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Lots can be found in tool places.
There are full face screens for gardners when they use weed whackers. Similar for arborists with chainsaw in the tree.
There are also sunglasses for motorcyclists that have foam padding that does not put pressure on the orbitals.
Remember that they also need to work at night, so dark or tinted is not always best.

I use glasses and a scarf. If it's real bad scarf goes over my whole face. You can still see through it. My virgin year I had goggles. Boy do they suck, so hot and sweaty.

The ones I have on in my picture are for dirt bike riding. They don't fog up etc and are pretty large. Google motorcycle shops.

I gotta agree with caffeineslinger. I always bring goggles but very rarely use them. I wear sunglasses and a keffiyeh (scarf). If a dust storm does kick up, I just close my eyes and keep riding. (Kidding. I usually just complain about dust in my eyes like everyone else does.)
So maybe what I'm suggesting is bring goggles, but don't expect you will have to wear them ALL the time. Sunglasses are usually enough. (Watch, this year will be a duststorm nightmare and everyone here will hate me.)

Ha! We won't hate you. We will be too busy helping you flush the grit from your eyes to hate you.
