Want to send mail to the playa in 2017? Read This!

Things look like they've changed up a little with the BRC Post Office this year. I'm hearing that Center Camp PO will not be doing mail delivery, and some important details have changed. The folks at BRCPO9 share this information:
  • No big boxes (they need to share space in a milk crate for delivery)
  • Don't send heavy things (eg: lead pipe, 40# of 6" duct tape)
  • No drugs (illegal), No valuables (things get lost occasionally), No alcohol (USPS special shipping)
  • We prefer: letters and postcards
Send to:

(Playa Name & Real Name)
(Camp Name / [optionally] camp description) & Playa address (intersection*)
[optionally include arrival info: Buildweek: [which day: T,W,Th,Fr,Sa] if it is a buildweek NEED, otherwise it will be delivered when the event begins]
BRCPO9
PO Box 149
Gerlach, NV 89412-0149

*An intersection / address is either man-side or mountain-side of the named street, and numbers - if it is a camp on the corner of a radial it is either [X] :01 or [X] :59 (should you be on a smaller/further radial... [X] :31 or [X] :29, etc) - depending on which side of the radial it is.

eg. Enderbia (small white sign) at 8:42 & Hallowed (mtn)

More info can be found at the PO9 web site.

A couple things to add.... first - I don't think most camps will have precise placement info until they actually get to the playa. Placed camps are only given an approximate address (things are subject to change until flags are placed and the team is on the ground in the desert), so it would not be possible for you to specify man-side or mtn-side, and you couldn't give a down-to-the-minute address. As another example, here's what I would put for my own address:
Trilo Byte
Brainy Bar - on Dance @ 5:15
BRCPO9
PO Box 149
Gerlach, NV 89412-0149
Second - a camp that may be expecting mail should make sure to have a clearly marked sign out front. You should also think about a mailbox (which could be a cool opportunity for art), so letters and cards can be delivered if nobody is at camp.

Third - make sure anyone sending mail to you sends it out a little early. Not weeks in advance, but remember, Gerlach is a town in the middle of nowhere, and it's at least another day for the mail to go from the Gerlach station to BRC.... and then it gets delivered to you.

Then, one last thing... BRCPO9 makes for a great walk-up volunteer opportunity at Burning Man. Once you're set up at your camp, if you're looking for opportunities to participate, help the community, and get to know the city (as well as meet a lot of people), delivering postcards and letters can be a great way to do all those things.
