Time on the Playa.
I lost my cell phone (temporarily) and had no other way to tell time.
It became immediately apparent that this was a bad situation to be in at Burning man.
Everything seems to run on a time schedule here . Want a pancake? 10 - 11 at x and 10 oclock.
Want to attend that lecture about holding your breath? Tuesday at 1:30 .
My advise is to go out and buy a $5. digital watch and wear it at all times. Leave Grandpa's Rolex at home.
Oh, and throw away your sell phone. It is a tool of the Space Invaders meant to make you their slave. If you must take pictures buy a cheap digital camera. As far as I know they can't watch you and know where you are at all times so when the invasion comes you can be herded onto the ships for processing into rocket fuel.

Words to live by!!!!
I don't carry my phone and just use a watch and simple point/shoot camera. I also like to forget the watch is there and just see where the day goes

I brought both a smart phone and a point and shoot camera. I brought the phone with me instead of the P+S camera because it is a lot easier to keep on my belt than the heavier and bulkier P+S camera. The phone was also nice for the map at times.
As for a watch, I wear one all the time anyway.

Wtf. "Playa Time" by its very definition means whenever-the-hell.
Most don't do Burning Man by a timetable of when this event is scheduled and that one.
Cell phones make great cameras these days and you can get nice waterproof - hence dustproof - cases for them.
You guys are living in bizarro-opposite land.

Yeah, but a watch is really helpful to see how long ago that event in the event book you considered attending ended before you remembered to go.

My advise is to learn yourself the ancient art of telling time by where the sun is located in the sky and your drunken shadow.capnjonny wrote:

I’m usually +- 15 minutes margin when doing this.
Besides, nothing worthy of a schedule ever happens on playa unless bound by celestial events:
Dark-30
Dawn-30
There is a reason those are used.

Re: Time on the Playa.
I'm fortunate to have a good internal clock that is within 15-20 minutes most of the time, even on the playa. However, I do have some volunteer shifts that start at specific times, so we also have a small wall clock in our kitchen area. It was gifted to us by a camp friend a few years ago and has a map of BRC with Destiny Lounge on the face. People in camp have the choice of noticing the time or ignoring it. Thing runs on a AA battery and seems to last forever. My cell phone (aka watch) lives in my tent and gets used primarily as an alarm clock for my early shifts. Every once in awhile I get it out and take some photos/videos of our camp with it. There are tons of amazing photographs generated each year. I just do some documentation.
A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

I must be an alien. In Defaultia I refuse to wear a watch. Burningman is the only place I wear one.

I have a battery powered alarm clock ($10) out there that I bought in the Klamath Falls Fred Meyer in 2011. Most of my volunteer shifts start at 7:30am, so I have to get up at 6:45am.
On nights before shifts, I carry either a pocket watch or phone so I get back to camp on time to sleep.

Re: Time on the Playa.
In the past, I've picked up a cheap pocket watch, and kept it attached to one of the belt loops on my kilt. Rarely checked it unless there was really a need, and it kept it out of the way otherwise
This year, I got curious about how much more exercise I actually get on playa, and so took my (waterproof) fitness tracker watch. Those results were quite illuminating, but I did find myself reflexively checking the time far more often than I had in years past.
