A real minimialist list?

Post by Kinetic » Sun Sep 21, 2003 3:35 pm

Ok, I've seen great posts but the thread topic is the Minimalist List. Badger got it, but his list is actually too short for me.

I'm looking for "The list", something that realistically covers the basics, and I mean survival basics for a 7 day stay at BRC. Then I'd have a second section of things that are almost critical but not mandatory. I know there's a list in the first timer's guide but can we really refine this down to the true bare essentials?

I could use such a list for other camping trips, and this would also help others who have to fly in to Reno for the event and can't haul tons of stuff. Water is a given, that can be bought in Reno, we'll use that as the starting point. 2 Gal. per person per day for the newbies, 1.5 for the rest. Beyond that, it's wide open. I'm still refining a list so I don't have one to post yet. Ideas anyone?

it depends a lot on the person. some people insist a tent is necessary, but i didn't use one for the last 2 years i went to burning man, nor do i use one on a good 80% of the trips i go on.

some people claim a bike is necessary, i find that they can be nice, but they also inhibit the personal interactions you get when going at walking speed.

the real basics involve food (i try to make mine mostly non-perishable), hydration, personal protection from the elements. there is some lattitude in how you accomplish those.

Couple things Badger left off that I think are important.

Hiking Kit
LED Flashlight/extra battery on lanyard/clipped to belt. (ARC LSL-S for me. LED lights are much more durable to shock/dropping when on.)
Chem-light (glow stick - 4 hour minimum)
Quality pocket knife/ (small, most big knives are not necessary.)
First Aid kit/bandaids (never hurts to be able to gift a bandaid to someone.)
Compass

Also, does Badger not eat? I saw no food. =)

flashlights, glowsticks, and a compass really aren't necessary,

a decent single blade knife and a first aid kit are just good to have anyways...

I posted this in the regular checklist, it is my minimum for car camping, basicly it is 4 tubs, 1 for food and 1 for clothes. The others are for sleeping and my gear and they are not full. ad water and "tent" ish stuff

here is a copy of the post

Here is one I have modified over a few years. I went out campjg with my son for a month and a half this summer before BM and it worked well, with just a few changes, like a tent instead of the tent cot. I changed some things after this BM and it works for me. It is self sufficent, and I would take this even if I were camping with others. I have stolen shamelessly and I could not tell you where everythin came from, but here it is

Smallest camp

Post by Silver » Thu Oct 02, 2003 7:20 am

THe smallest amount of 'stuff' I have seen that supported a full week was a young man who brought:

water
The clothes that he showed up and left in
1 backpackers bivy
1 ground pad
1 sleeping bag
1 small pot
1 backpackers stove + 1 extra tank
1 package of no-soap towels
1 toothbrush and paste
1 backpackers first aid kit
4 MRE's
1 large box of pasta
salt
1 flashlight
2-3 yards of cheap fabric for sarongs
1 light jacket
and of course, his towel

He hitched in and out so no car

I heard about a guy who showed up with a car, some water, clothes and a large quanity of grass and who lived very well all week. It may have just been a playa rumor.

the essentials

-A charming smile
-The willingness to ask

It's easy to survive out there with those two things.

If you're ugly and rude then I would definately refer to the other lists....or maybe the survival guide the event produces.

you could go to the playa with nothing but the close on your back and maybe a few little trinkets and survive very well. People take care of each other. There was one night when i was stumbling around after having been givin a drink ( careful when getting drinks from people!) and these lovely theme camp that i stumbled into took me in, they fed me fresh fruits and gave me warm clothes to wear. There is often a strong bond of community out there.

can't spit be substituted for lube, less to worry about, and Astroglide is expensive?

Jiffy Lube has usually bowls of condoms and single use lube tubes.

I won't go into what you need to go through to get some, but I hope they are back this year.
I am a bit tied up at the moment...but if you leave your name and number.....

i want to make myself a utility belt... kind of like a hippy version of batman's belt. much more comfortable than carrying around a backpack for small trips around the playa but still very handy

a portion of my little tiny list:

food
water
ticket
sleeping roll (sleepingbag, foam pad, ect)
possibly a small tent
sarong
kitchen stuff (bowl&spoon, ect)
water bottles/camel pack
toothbrush
handy wipe like things
bandaids
pen and notepad
flashlight/glowsticks

...i think that about sums it up. im sure im still missing something though.

hanging things from one's belt is the most useful thing ever. i was one unit with my backpack since about sixth grade, until i joined cast at the bristol renn faire. the costume had no pockets - you hung purses and pouches from your belt. MOST USEFUL IDEA EVER. your mug/water supply, your hand fan, wallet, sunscreen, bowl and spoon, hairpins, needle and thread, lockback, chapstick, handkerchiefs, some candied almonds.... all right there at your disposal! granted, the contents of the belt pouches need to be changed for the playa as opposed to faire.... add some dust masks for example.... still.... a couple drawstring cloth pouches are *so* easy to make, and you just tie a rope knotted at intervals around your waist for the belt.....

and burners really should steal the renn faire tactic of hanging a hand fan off your person. i can't overemphasize what a world of difference a fan makes.....

Please, let's not encourage the Bliss Kittens.

Bring enough stuff to support yourself for the duration of your stay. The stuff you forgot either can be gifted or do without.

My List:
Bedding...and lots of it!
3 large flashlights, 2 small, 2 penlights
Snacks, canned soup and fruit, instant Swiss Mocha, and electrolite beverage mix
Beer
4 suitcases of water
1 carton of cigarettes and lots of ways to make fire
Gifts for my Pottie Volunteers
Scarves for breathing through, and to keep my hair under control
Costumes, clothing, and raingear
5 gallons of gasoline, a road flare, and a shovel in case there's trouble
Toiletries, incl "girl stuff" even if I don't think I'll need it
More beer to give to DPW
5 pair of good shoes (3 gave me blisters last year)
5 gallon bucket w/ pottie lid
Ziploc bags - 3 sizes, Handi-Wipes, and TP
And of course, my towel
I'll be in my blanket fort until further notice.

OK, here's what I bring for life support

Post by KC » Fri Jul 02, 2004 8:37 pm

1 car to get myself transported in, mylar space blankets cut and inserted into the windows of the car since it sits parked there for a week+, two of those accordion fold reflective-y thingies - one for windshield and one for the back window. I like my car.

crappy tent
a section of plastic garage foam squares you'd stand on, I lock them together and line my tent with them. you can buy a package of them at costco
sleeping bag
1 flashlight
cooler (lined with tinfoil, regular ice)
half rack of tecate in cans
no-cook canned and bags snack-y foods (I eat everything as-is, no stove)
bottle of brandy
6-pack of ginger ale
smokes
1 roll toilet paper
4 washcloths
1 chambray skirt
1 pareo thing
2 pairs shorts
about 12 pairs underwear
10 pairs socks
1 bikini
1 pair jeans
1 pair sweats
like 2-3 white tshirts
5 gals H20, in plastic "suitcases" with one in a gallon jug. Jug is re-used for grey water.
snow toboggan, inverted for grey water evap
sun shower
3 pairs of shoes - 1 for day, afternoon and night. sandals are for days in camp. boots are for afternoon lamplighter work, boots are for night.
sunscreen
lip balm
sunglasses
glow sticks
baby wipes
condoms
pre-soapy disposable cleaning cloth things
fanny pack
leatherman tool
nalgene bottle
dishpan
all clothes are packed in gallon zip lock bags which double for a pillow since I don't bring one, trash is packed in sandwich and snack sized zip locks. all of this is packed into a plastic tub.
1 towel
plastic mug
plastic plate
liquid soap stuff to wash body, hair
package of drywall masks
intense hand lotion - ie cornhuskers lotion
tylenol pm and calms forte so I can fucking sleep when need be
some larger-scale food donation for a communal meal
yep, that's about it. not sure if it qualifies as minimal or not.. .
