2019 Internet Connectivity

Post by some seeing eye » Tue Jun 04, 2019 6:36 pm

2019 is the same as 2018: https://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic ... ernet+2018

Options:
#1 Be self reliant and rent a sat phone.
#2 Be self reliant and bring a dish - usually a year subscription for rural peeps, subscribe to the service and aim it, then set up a WiFi hotspot
#3 Buy the pod and subscribe to the cell provider micronode "hotspot" service
#4 Pray a camp you find wandering opens their WiFi to visitors with complex secret handshakes
#5 Maybe the two base stations in range are not overloaded while admitting major USA carrier premium plans

#3, 4, 5 use the same congested path. #3, 5 are congested last mile after Sunday opening. #4 bandwidth decreases each year.

#6 Blow up cell towers and relay equipment and crush both cell phone usage and wifi hotspots in one fell swoop...

I only see one option.

Heavy cable cutters are useful too, cut the cord. (like the whole bundle)
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Ah Mr Jackass, always the trickster! (obviously don't do that)
I heard a rumor that a camp adjacent to an irritating PnP set up an open access node with no backhaul to the Internet and with an SSID implying it was in the PnP. The PnP was then questioned incessantly by passers by, who should not be connecting anyway, on how to connect. That would be a combination of culture jamming and SSID jamming.
As noted in a previous post, #5 is also a good way to connect with Stingrays

When we are there, we do not care about Internet. I don't get why people cannot disassociate from it for one week. Sad.
As the camp evolves.....
We got this! 2016/2019
We had it! 2020
We almost lost it! 2021
We have no idea where it is! 2022
Who the hell are we and why are we here? 2023

SSE, stingrays are prepackaged mini-cell towers for LE use. GSM/GPRS.

The lingo for a WiFi spoof is a honeypot.

BTW anyone can set up a stingray with OpenBTS. Was done a while back on Playa before cell service was available.

Hi all, in all my posts, I try to frame the response to the anticipated reader; tech + anthropology background.

So for technical things I try to provide actionable ideas, while hiding actionable by bad guy information. (Why are most of the bad guys, guys? That's a problem!)

I also sometimes try to sense the native English/not character of the reader and adjust. I try to sense the real question.

I'm proud of a response, 2014, to an overseas virgin here. While the ePlaya responses to their question were hostile, along the line of preparedness, the response I made was useful, and that individual participated magnificently, at real major heath risk to their career. That individual deleted their account, so the thread was lost. Maybe that was better for ePlaya in context. Maybe it is in ePlaya archives. I believe it was an ePlayan who later posted a video made from their mobile (ePlaya-cursed) phone at their well known theme camp of that virgin's world class performance memorial to a lost friend. That virgin participated in a beautiful way, not even expecting to be videoed.

Generally I have found Reddit the more likely platform for fierce inconsequential debates of semantics and technology.

Brilliant! I have an old wireless server that I may bring, just to have on hand for such shenanigans.
