Leaving : (

I'm coming from the east coast and have to work on Tuesday...would you suggest leaving a few days early to avoid traffic getting out? : (

What traffic?

It’s all been figured out over the past 30 years ...

The gate pulsing is very efficient these days and you’ll be in Reno in ~ 4 hours.

Easy-peasy

Well that's kind of vague. Train, plane, or automobile? Do you have a return ticket? Do you have a rental car?

SarahAnn, do you have a ticket to Burning Man yet, or are you waiting to get all the details worked out before trying for one?

Have you considered selling it and going to the Bahamas instead?

It’s real nice there.

The Bahamas aren’t what they used to be.

Having to be on the east coast Tuesday means leaving the playa by mid-day Saturday, if it’s super important you be there on time.

There are virtually NO seats open on any planes leaving the Reno airport during the days around Burning Man. This got even tighter with the grounding of the Boeing airplanes. If plane connections and traffic jams leaving the playa are too tight, you might end up either staying in Reno for several extra days, or driving to another airport to make a flight---such a San Fransisco.

Most flights out to the east coast are red-eye flights, so you will need to board the afternoon the day before you need to get home. Expect to land very early on Tuesday morning. You might consider leaving on a flight Sunday afternoon in order to get home on Monday morning, so you can rest up and shower for work on Tuesday. This would require you to leave the playa very early on Sunday morning, or late night on Saturday after the Man burn.

Another alternative that many people do is to call in sick on that Tuesday after Labor Day. With lungs filled with playa dust, you will most likely have that raspy, sick voice already.

In addition to Mr Sham's links to read, you can search ePlaya through Google -
your-search-term site:eplaya.burningman.org. Using Google that way is much better than the search box on ePlaya itself.

The main burningman.org has information on "exodus." As well as the BurnerxBus and BurnerxAir.

The burning man Twitter is updated for entry and exodus in real time and has past years' times. Often someone will graph the data. https://twitter.com/bmantraffic. Most people also bring an FM radio, some delay information and emergency announcements are on BMIR 94.5MHz

The BurnerxBus bypasses hours of parking cars in "pulse lines," but still has to endure the traffic delays from the gate to Reno, SF & elsewhere.

If you have a lot of funds, BurnerxAir is the fastest and most reliable way to leave, but you can't carry much luggage, and the price will be higher this year.

That being said, a dust storm, rain storm or missing kid can shut the gates for hours, to a day or longer if we have rain. One year, there was a range fire which closed the only road Southbound for many hours. Usually there are traffic accidents that can slow things on that road unpredictably.

If that causes you and everyone else to miss flights, it can take a long time to rebook a flight to Mr Sham's point.

Most people build in a worst case time buffer and use the extra time to check into a hotel, shower, put on clean clothes and have a meal. Returning a rental car can take time. One of our most excellent ePlayans, Doc Pyro, negotiates a discounted BDV Hotel Deal each year. We do have dusty burners that get directly on outbound flights, but is considered impolite to do that, the dust stinks - it smells like ammonia, you stink, and the dust is going to get on the passengers next to you, the seat and the carpet. Another outbound shower option is a truck stop. Keep those clean travel clothes in a sealed plastic bag until after that shower. If you end up with excess buffer time in Reno or SF it might be possible to do a load of laundry.

Without the satellite phone you rented it will be very difficult to get a call out to work or family from the campsite.

The Man effigy burns Saturday night and the Temple Sunday night. I've never missed either. The energy after the man burn even onto dawn is unique. The Temple burn is also a special event which you can't understand until you experience it.

There you have it, all the information you need to be self reliant for exodus and plan your own adventure.

Rule #1
At Burning Man, anything can, might, will, probably, or might not happen to delay or cancel any plans you have.

If you are super time critical, your best decision might be to sell your ticket, save a whole lot of money on a whole bunch of other things, and watch the whole event 24 hrs. a day on the live video feed.
