Burner coming from Ireland in need of bike/tent everything!
Burner coming from Ireland in need of bike/tent everything!
Hi there!
So I am coming to Burning Man from Ireland and it is a very long way, and unfortunately airlines are not very generous when it comes to baggage allowance! This means that I need to get everything I need for the Burn when I get the the States, and then I need to gift it all when I leave again.
In theory this sounds great, as it is nice to gift, but last year I tried to gift things at the end and people didn't want anything or didn't have space to keep things. Someone eventually agreed to store stuff for on my behalf for reuse but I just found out that they got rid of everything recently, including my bike that had previously been bought, without telling me.
Unfortunately I can't afford o buy stuff every time if I want to come, particularly as the costs of coming from abroad and hiring vehicles etc etc already makes it a trip I can barely afford, so I would love it if people who have spare of ANYTHING, but most importantly a BIKE, and if anyone would be able to help me out.
I don't need this stuff forever as I will have nowhere to keep it at the end, so I am not asking for a permanent gift, just a week long one! I am sorry to ask people like this and don't like to have to rely on the help of others, but in this case I am a bit desperate!
Thank you for reading this message and no problem if you can't help, I hope you all have your best burn yet!
Peace and love to all
Ruth

Re: Burner coming from Ireland in need of bike/tent everythi
i come from 2500 miles away..
i can fit all my camping stuff in a regular sized piece of luggage
i cant fit a bike, so i walk at burning man.
my clothes go in another smaller bag..

bag is 26tallx14deepx16wide inches
inside of it is:

tent, tent poles, sleeping bag, blanket, sleeping pad, rug, melodica, towel, stakes, light stand/tripod, extra shoes, solarpowered drink bottle, cooler filled with burner stuff

stuff from the cooler: bag of toiletries(wet wipes, earplugs, lotion..etc), bag of electronics (amfm radio, set of headphones, alarm clock, phone charger.etc), batteries, umbrella, camp stove fuel and pan, cutlery, dinnerplate, two bowls, 3 kinds of tape, superglue, floral wire, extra carabiners, two headlamps, work gloves, 2 head coverings, bandana for dust, water spray bottle, multitool, 3 water bottles, goggles, notebook.. small tiny backpack

clothes in the orange bag with black camera bag with two SLR cameras zipped up at the top of it..
burning man ticket and paperwork for scale
all my crap for burning man except food and water weighs about 65 pounds and easily fits within the alloted 2 bags that i get.

Hi Ruth. Let me offer some disjointed rambling thoughts to you. You should be able to buy all the supplies you need, including a cheap tent, sleeping bag, camping gear and food, all in Reno. My first year, I came with just 2 suitcases, so I packed a light 4 person tent, sleeping bag and all the things that would fit. I purchased a cheap-o mountain bike and gave it to a camp mate to hold. It was only a 50/50 chance it would come back, but it was worth the chance.
I bought a new bike the next year, but did see someone in camp riding my first one around. That's all part of the price of traveling a distance.
Pack very wisely and make lists of things you need to buy and you should be fine. Remember that you can use the yellow bikes around BRC, but they are not able to be reserved or locked. If you get off and leave it, it's now up for grabs.

You also need to indicate where you're flying into (SFO? Reno?) and how you're going to pick stuff up if offered. And what about post burn? I would hope you're not expecting people to haul these items to and from BRC for you. Then it starts to sound like a take care of me scenario. Good luck.

Hi Ruth,
You might look for an RV share in this forum. It's not the end of the world if you haven't got a bike; I didn't touch mine in 2009, and in 2010 rode it maybe twice. You might be able to negotiate with a neighbor for a few rides or as Shambala suggests, use the community's shared Yellow Bikes (if you haven't noticed them before, they're actually bright green and plain).
This camp below supplies a lot of stuff including use of a bicycle (I don't know whether you have to share it, or if its all yours for the week). I don't know anything about them personally as a camp, and the dues might be steep.

Good luck to you.

of course not everyone can/wants to do it like i do it..
but i cant help but scoff (a little bit, OK ITS A TINY SCOFF) at the idea of people from far away not feeling able to travel with their camping stuff.
i come from 2500 miles away ... you can do it!

Obviously it can be done, but I certainly understand her apprehension.

Re: Burner coming from Ireland in need of bike/tent everythi
I find the problem is not ao much that you can't bring the stuff in airplane luggage - although packing everything can be done it means you have to severely limit other stuff.
things i have found that I can get easily that are limited availability over there
cordials (ginger and elderflower mainly) now they can be bought on amazon but you need to get a case at a time and they dont have that big a shelf life.
single malt whisky. Now i am sure you can get it over there, but I've had 3 people mention it as something they would like.
"unique" british items (bovril, marmite, garibaldi biscuits among others)
I am damn sure all of these can be found but thats not the point, its nice to bring something from home to home
so sometimes buying stuff in reno is the cheapest option, you could rent storage somewhere ( i have a share in 1 in fernley) and leave your camping stuff from 1 year to the next. Or spend some time on here and find someone who lives nearby who can put your tent and camping stuff in there garage for a year.
