What do parking lots at superstores and grocery stores, rest areas, and motels and parks have in common? They should NOT contain burner trash. This includes pre-event as well as post event. Sure, the survival guide suggests stripping off all excess packaging.... AT HOME. In the WalMart parking lot? Put it all in a big plastic bag and put THAT in your vehicle. Don't overload the meager trash cans at stores, and put your carts back into the cart corrals.
For the last few years, the manager at Love's truckstop has arranged dumpsters. You know what? Don't use them for your carpets and couches and crap. Maybe one modest bag of stinky trash before a long drive is okay, but taking advantage of local generosity to dump your entire camp is RUDE and WRONG. Stop that.
Haul your crap back where it came from. If you cannot, go to the dump and pay like a good civic minded citizen. Don't be a freeloading jerk.
Rest areas mean someone is coming a long way to empty those dumpsters. They are not meant for burner trash, so don't put yours in there. Take it the fuck home.
Washing your hair in the truckstop sink? CLEAN THAT SHIT UP. Just because there's free running water doesn't mean it belongs all over the bathroom. Be respectful.
Staying at a motel? Have a clean pair of shies handy so you don't fuck up their carpets.
No wonder so many locals hate us. Enough burners are not respectful once they leave the dust.

+100 to this.
Also - when you get back to where you live, you still need to dispose of them properly - don't just dump them by a city garbage can.
There is one major carwash in SF (corner of 10th & Harrison) that a lot of Burners use. Last year there were huge construction-site size garbage bags dumped at city garbage cans around it, and while we were washing our RV we had paramedics come up and ask if we could dispose of them, while saying that they thought that "Burners were supposed to be about 'Leave No Trace'". Burners, in general, left a bad impression on them, and this is in the city where the event was born. Ugh.

Hail!
I've always thought that the border of Defaultia is as awful a place to dump trash as the playa.
Reduce, recycle, reuse. Think of the dumpster as a last resort.

Some of the family & I were at the VA hospital most of the day..
We were given a family waiting room to hang in..
I went around where each had been and picked up even the smallest crumb..
Guess Burning Man is getting me trained..
Saw pictures of rugs and sofas piled on a stores dumpster last year.. That was sad..
