Trash or Sink Disposal?

I know this doesn't apply to BRC, however: Is it better to throw veggie/fruit scraps into the trash or garbage disposal?

I know it would probably be BEST to turn it into compost, and use it on gardens, however, I live in an apartment without those options. So from an eco standpoint, is it better to be put into a landfill under tons of trash, maybe to never rot from lack of oxygen? Or is it better to put into disposal, to follow water stream into water reclaimation facility? Is there any benefit to either system?

I know you regular posters either know the answer, or will find it for me in a very short matter of time, so THANKS in advance!

Landfills are much maligned, decently managed ones actually produce energy from the methane. The EPA has a program for that.

I'd say go with protecting our clean water sources and keep the stuff out of the disposal. I don't think we ever use our disposal except for what's on the occasional dish. "We all live downstream."

Plus certain vegetative matter will do wonders as compost, while it *will* glue up your drainage system and make a profit for a plumber to come out and unstuck the holy mess.

I am thinking that either way it is going to get broken down, The trash would probably be best as it will not require more chemicals in the sewer system be expended to treat it.

So if you cant recycle, i would probably toss it - if your gabage goes to a methane recovering landfill it wont go to waste entirely.
