Check out this great advice from your friends at Playa Info:

Every year thousands of items are lost (and found!) on the Playa. There really is no such thing as a Playa gift; what you find in the dust belongs to someone who has lost it. Besides, picking up and turning in items to Lost and Found is a leave-no-trace action.

We VOLUNTEERS at Playa Info try our best to reunite items with their owners. That is one of the service gifts Playa Info provides to Black Rock City (BRC). But, there are steps you can take pre- and on-playa to help yourself, others and us before you lose anything!

Prevention is the best cure. Consider putting a label or a luggage tag on anything precious or--better yet--on everything, while you are packing for the playa. Think about the “real estate” area on the item. If you have a large space (big real estate) label the item with your name, phone number, email address, facebook page and playa camp location, if you are sure of it. If small real estate--label with minimum of name and phone number or e-mail address or other reliable way to contact you. Airline counters are great places to get free luggage tags.

Write up your info on a sheet of paper and take a photograph with your camera, and leave the image as the first one in your photo set. Better yet, simply label the camera. We get hundreds of cameras, and it takes a long time to look through each camera for your information. Take address labels with you so you can tag everything you didn't think you needed to tag. The mighty wind can whisk away the most essential items. Yes, we have had tarps, small tents, back packs and sleeping bags all turned into Lost and Found. Label everything you want to get back!

Consider leaving very precious items at home: your childhood bike, your great-grandmother's ring, or that special item of clothing that means so much to you.

Speaking of bikes, they are the only thing we don’t take at Lost and Found. There is a separate process for dealing with lost bikes: [email protected]. Better yet, simply lock your bike at all times. After your bike is stolen once, you probably will lock the next bike.

You don’t want to lose your car keys, right? Get a hide-a-key box, put your vehicle key in it and hide it on your vehicle, where you’ll remember where it is a week later. We get a lot of car keys turned in to Lost and Found…..bummer, huh? Lock up your wallets, passports, airline tickets in your vehicle, hide your spare key, and party/sleep easy.

Next, check your ID! Many passports and driving licenses are sent back to the owner every year, only to be returned because the owner has moved on. Write your current address in permanent ink on your ID. For on playa travels, make a copy of your official ID and health insurance and carry it instead of the original.

Finally, if you do lose something at BRC, come on down to Lost and Found, behind Playa Info, in the Center Camp keyhole and let us help you. We are open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm every day. Although our primary goal is to return as much stuff on playa as we can, post-playa we take all of the remaining items back to BM in San Francisco. There, a dedicated number of volunteers continue to reunite people with their lost stuff for the next five months. So, you can see that labeling your stuff is sooooooo important, to you and us.

I lost my wedding ring on the playa last year. I really should have used a sharp stylus to scratch my name on the inner surface. Will do this year.

Iffen you've got a fancy phone with a lock screen that lets you use a custom picture, make a custom picture that has an "if found, please call ________" with the number of a friend traveling with you (or bf/gf/etc).

Make a tag for your bike! Playa name, camp name & BRC location are a must, plus home city & either an email address or phone number. Ideally you and your bike don't get separated on the playa, but should that happen you've greatly increased the chances of somebody helping to get that back to you.

Especially if they have plans to drink or ingest something.

Sharpie on the arm would've helped my campmate in '01. She was actually stone cold sober, but had never been to the playa before, & didn't know what our address was. Landmarks were fewer and smaller then, and the sound camps and other landmarks more concentrated, & a ways away. She went off to use the bathroom, probably got distracted from there, and then plain old got lost. A nice woman gave her a beverage and a Snickers bar and she eventually found her way home none the worse for wear.

I sharpie my address on my bike. It wears off by the next year but seems to last throughout the burn just fine. And please lock your bike! So many bikes were left on playa last year, and I am pretty sure many of those were the "borrowed" ones that people couldn't get home because they didn't have room to get a bike to playa in the first place.

Right--most stolen bikes are dumped after judgment is restored, not removed from the playa.

No bike is considered lost until the event is over. Starting Monday (through Wednesday Post-Event), lost bikes can possibly be recovered at the Yellow Bike Camp. After Wednesday, unclaimed bikes are donated to Reno-based nonprofits that fix them up and provide them to underprivileged kids. Your bike is much less likely to be ‘borrowed without asking’ if it looks unique so decorate your bike! Make sure decorations are securely affixed. Lastly, DO NOT ditch your bike at Burning Man! Dealing with abandoned bikes stretches our already over-taxed resources. Send additional questions to [email protected]

I turned in a bike headlight this year that was probably valued @ $3.97. It made me feel pretty good.
Besides, I already had one.
I turned in a few other li'l thangs as well.

This may be the perfect time to remind everyone to use those tiny address stickers that you get from charities in the mail (but don't send a donation)---on everything you don't want to lose. Cameras, flashlights, cell phones, wallets, passports etc. Trim the stickers down as small as possible, and put them on everything. You will hopefully get a nice surprise when your $500 cell phone is mailed back home to you.

I like to think of what to label as:
would this make a nice gift if it got separated from me?
I was gifted a very nice hand cast aluminum badge with my name prominently molded into it.
It was never returned. I assume someone thought it was a nice playa gift. Hopefully they will someday hear of my existence and feel some desire to let me know it's safe and soon returned.

If you're going to make up stories about stuff, make up good stories.

Not unexpected, when a two-year-old thread is bumped. Many things that were true in 2012 are not true now.
