I take these up to wine country when I'm planning on bringing a bunch home. they slide into standard size cardboard boxes, and are pretty bulletproof.
They do however take up a shit ton of room, but I have a truck and trailer so no biggie. ... =82&chn=ps

I would imaging a similar thing could be found for your canning jars.

Regarding travelling with glass. I have went on 4 vacations the past 2 years where I take home around 7 bottles of beer from wherever I went and wrap them in socks in my suitcase surrounded by layers of clothes. So far I have had nothing broken and it works well to bring beer home.

I may bring some homebrew bottles with me, but most of mine will be kegged. My cousin left a bottle in front of my house a couple weeks ago and it exploded when the sun hit it. I think there still may be glass in my driveway. Aside from the moop factor, it is potentially dangerous.

If bottles are brought, make sure they stay completely out of the sun.

What a brilliant way to avoid beer bottle moop!!!!

Put bottle in sock, open bottle, enjoy!!!!!!!!!! 8)

If you drop it and break it, IT'S ALL IN THE SOCK!

I avoid glass, but it's hard if you are bringing hard alcohol. Thankfully those bottles tend to be pretty thick and not easy to break. Champagne is more of a challenge. If I bring champagne, I get one of those cardboard boxes with the dividers and keep them in there. Socks is great suggestion, I will add a layer of socks!

Also - if you are bringing glass, bring a shovel and extra thick garbage bags. The easiest cleanup for broken glass is to take a thin layer of playa with the glass as a scrape and drop into a doubled garbage bag.

I saw a guy in the very early morning picking up glass shards in the road once. Not sure if it was his or if he was a kind man that stopped to do a kind act. He didn't even have gloves!

almost any kind wrap masking/strapping/duct/duck/gorilla/donkey/gaffers tape around the glass to contain the inevitable breakage.
ship them in partitioned boxes.
