Have you seen this Faun?

Have you seen this Faun? Roughly the size of a human head, one of the Eridu Society campmates put a lot of heart and soul into making this piece. Someone ripped it off its mounts (it was screwed into a 2x4 behind the fabric) and made off with it on burn night.

We’re hoping the person didn’t keep it for long, either leaving it at another camp or having passed it along to someone who may not have known it was taken without permission, and would be kind enough to return it if they knew. Whatever the story/condition, we’d be grateful to get it back.

Of all the things people find to write and complain about, I don't think there is anything worse than art theft; yet other than in lost and found, I don't ever recal a discussion on this problem.

I seem to recall the topic of theft and vandalism having come up in various conversations in the past, though I don't have any links to pull up offhand. We also had two other pieces that were damaged/destroyed in unsuccessful attempts, but from what we saw on Sunday morning it looked like the Faun's head was completely (and hopefully intactly) removed. Rather than focusing on the outrage, we're trying to keep things positive and hopeful... maybe someone's fun got too far out of hand, or maybe it was taken and then 'gifted' or left with another person or camp who didn't know anything about the piece. If anyone either has it or knows something about what became of it, please send me a private message.

One of the coolest things about Burning Man is that everyone there made a huge commitment of time, resources, and effort to be there. That usually weeds out the bad element. Hopefully whoever did this figures out how un-cool that was and makes it right.

In 2001 or so, I worked for untold hours making a set of stainless steel flames, eventually to go in the grille of a '59 Chevy truck... guess what happened to them at Burning Man...

It's just disheartening to hear about this. I mean they had to YANK it off of its mount to take it. This isn't just a casual walk by grab and go. There was EFFORT here. And then they messed with some of your other structures too? You hate to say it, but at a certain point you just want to shrug and say "Why bother?" Sorry sorry and I hope as well that it gets returned.

At first my gut check response is anger and disgust...I mean seriously?

But the calm and Jedi air that the incident is presented and considered brings me back down to home.

With 50+ thousand people all pretty much intent on doing their own thing and having a time...I am surprised there is not more such theft, damages, and related.

Considering the fallibility of the human as a whole one would think to find massive whole scale destructive behavior all in the name of Whoooooo, Hell Ya, and YOLO.

It is still a shame. I can offer to make you another...I am quite handy with the clay and such...though I suspect your local member would rather reinvest for karma's sake...still I offer :D

The calm and forward-thinking response of the owners, to the theft above, is also to be admired. It's easy to become embittered by an incident like this and assume the worst for the remainder of the society.

On another note, I'm going to have to steal a copy of that image of that faun. That face is just hilarious! It'd be a great avatar too.
