Simon, it's also worth pointing out your own slice of responsibility in it all. You spent years helping to build and big big crazy camps who participated heavily in the performance lineup arms race.... actions have consequences. Not to say it's solely your fault, but you helped create your own reality.

All that said, it's Burning Man. If you don't like what somebody's doing, just keep on moving. In a short time you'll be at the next camp, on to better things as they say. Black Rock City is a great big place, and part of the awesomeness and weirdness of it all is the diversity. For every camp you think is great, there will be several you don't connect with.

Speaking personally, I'm less interested in the names on the bill than the party and the space and the atmosphere they're creating. For years I've been shunning the big lineup spammers and the rockstar librarian list and still having a great burn. If there's a particular artist or performer who I'm trying to catch, I'm more likely to ask/get that info directly from her or him. I'm still lousy at getting to anything scheduled, which is why I'm more interested in just knowing what they're going for on the night. Be it a white party or ho down or fashion show or electro-swing steampunk nonsense... find the stuff that excites you and ignore what doesn't.

agreed.

the playa crowd is a fickle lover.

they roam like moths to the biggest flame.

i rant and rave (pun intended) to protect the man...even though we're going to burn him, he is worth fighting for.

i hope that the Gubbermint does not decide that BM is a music festival, because that would break my heart....im serious.

im fucking serious.

i love the man, and i'm not afraid to admit it in public.

he burns in 54 days.

get to work on your art and stop reading shit like this...

My thoughts: I like big sound and big lights and edm. They are not why I go to Burning Man, but I like to check it out when I am there. I feel that if big sound camps want to fly in some big name DJ to gift that music to the community, more power to them. It is still a gift. They don't charge us to get in. They have to build their camps and tear them down and moop just like the rest of us.

That being said, when it starts to flow over into defaultia, I have a BIG PROBLEM with it. Being in the WWWW is a lot different than blatantly advertising on-line. White Ocean is out of line with that and I think the BORG should be notified. I have also had some icky feelings about some other large sound camps lately, with their for profit gigs posted all over the place. If you use the name "insert large sound camp here" for your business, it should not be the name of your camp. That would be like having Walmart Camp. Its advertising for free through the event.

With all the bullshit surrounding large edm events lately, I think advertising like this could be dangerous for the event. The last hurdle Burning Man needs is a bunch of teenie-boppers day tripping in and OD'ing like they are at EDC.

All ego driven things are not a gift. The supposed charitable gifters are getting plenty out of it. They are not suffering or scrimping in their personal lives to make sure anyone gets anything. Such a peon notion to think that those living larger than you are gifting you the privilege. Heck, I enjoy the sound camps and I am gifting them with my presence. Or does this sound big-headed of me, considering I don't have an itunes hooked to gigantic speakers? People showing off, and now ramping it up to a commercial level, is not a gift, even if you are impressed.

And when Walmart eventually "gifts" to the event, there will be plenty lined up to defend them and claim inclusion, and it's nice the mega-corp is gifting and blah blah blah.

Burning Man is aware of what they're doing. While you may not care for the camp or their timing, it's different from any other camp that puts together lineup listing graphics on their Facebook pages or camp web sites. And camps with sound systems big and small have had people in charge of putting the performance lineup together for years and years. It's not often that their names are included in the lineup listings, but that's not because there have been rules against it.

Example:

You read about someone who anonymously donates a million bucks to a charity.
You read about Big Hollywood Star donating a million bucks to a charity.

Which person understood the meaning of a gift?

You and I are saying the same thing with different words. I am for the gifting of music, in whatever form. I am against the listing of performer names and other commodification (sp) at the event or using the event. If you are going to bring big name so-and-so, put them up there to play anonymously. No names, no line-ups, no pre-event/post-event for profit gigs. And that is for everyone, not just djs.

Hell, what if I wanted to bring the hottest name in polka, the best polka there is? I should be able to build my polka camp and let them play. But not advertise for them. Not allow them to profit from the event. Not profit myself. Just enjoy some fuckin' polka!

It's in the Bible people !!!!!!!!!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesson_of_ ... w%27s_mite
In the story, a widow donates two small coins, while wealthy people donate much more. Jesus explains to his disciples that the small sacrifices of the poor mean more to God than the extravagant, but proportionately lesser, donations of the rich.

I've always thought the eplaya, through moderators reporting, is one of the ways "Burning Man" could be aware about what maybe they AREN'T doing.

I'm with you on this issue Simon. I don't even like to smell a sandwich before I take a bite.

Kittyrodriguez, Simon was referring to you being a babe because of your time here on eplaya. either way it was a high five for correctness.

...and finally, I am coming home this year.

I love you all and I would love to be eating at Schwabl's with you.

OH, and just so you know, here is a quick message from Sideshow Camp 2014.

Three of the four Calliope Clapper Monkeys have 'Bit the Dust', so to speak. And Monkey Quatro isn't doing so well either.

So we'd like to take this opportunity to let you know we have a little shameless fundraiser going on. Won't you help???? Please. For the Monkeys.

Please, help new healthy Monkeys make it to the Playa This Year. Who knows??? Maybe these Virgin Monkeys will help you re-live your Birgin year vicariously.

Its like having your very own lab chimp, but with sound! And a banana. Please help. It's For the Monkeys.

I enjoy the presence of these large sound camps. They do justice by taking all the soul less candy kids away from my intimate time with said camp playing said music.

Last year I camped with HPC and met some german kid. Slept in the same tent with him the night before we left. Shared beers, laughed all day, and helped each other out during build up.
He told our whole camp to see him perform later that monday night. I was not expecting anything. He just told us he plays good techno.
Ben was his name and Ben, at age 22, was surely the best performer on top of all these big names that week only because of the connection we all built a few days prior.
I have him on facebook now and I see that he performs at many festivals held in Germany and surrounding countries. Dude was incredible.

I will say I'm into certain artist that have performed out there before. And I enjoyed the experience of dancing to their tunes (pre made or not) in a different enviroment.
But credit will always go to those moments when you discover something new.
